Wow! I knew he spoke Aramaic but I didn't think about the fact that Hebrew was a defunct spoken language at this point.

    • @dfacedagame
      @dfacedagame 3 роки тому +14

Hebrew was not defunct, not even a little. It was on coinage, found in 90 % of Dead Sea scrolls , archeology and writings...
He was a Hebrew Rabbi, the long awaited Jewish Messiah, the King of the Jews. He spoke in Synagogues and Temple and HEBREW is the only language He could speak in them.
He did also speak Aramaic as the Bible has direct Aramaic transliterations into the Greek that quote Him using Aramaic. When He brought the young girls back to life. He said “Rise young girl” or in Aramaic , He said “Cumi Talitha” while similar in Hebrew , this would be the exact way it was said in Aramaic. That goes for when he said this on the cross too....
“My God , my God why have you forsaken me”.... “ Eli, Eli, lama sabachtani”.... that is Aramaic ..
So it seems He picked and chose what language to speak when and to whom.
The reason we know 10000% He spoke Hebrew was because , Paul said He came to Him on the Road to Damascus speaking, Hebrasti (Hebrew, in Greek) , not Aramaic.
Also in all his teaching and parables , He used a linguistic skill of rhyming and similar sounding called Hebraisms...
Like when He said, “from these stones can be sons”
In Hebrew , it’s “ vene’im bene’im” stones and sons are almost exactly the same word and rhyme... this is only true in Hebrew and not Aramaic or Greek. He does this dozens and dozens of times.
Hebrew was farrrrrr from defunct. It’s actually a terrible myth and has been disproven 100x’s over. This may have been the majority thought 120 years ago, but we have too much proof now.
Another example of a Hebraism in the NT is in Luke... when it says... “ His name shall be called Jesus, for He shall save His people”
To fill in the Hebrew words that sound the same , it would go like this, “ His name shall be called YESHUA , for He may YASHA His people.”
And plus, only in Hebrew does Yeshua mean Salvation and its root word Yasha mean “to save”.
Too much points to Hebrew being the main component of Jesus Christ and His earthly ministry.

Actually during the time of Jesus, some forms of vernacular Hebrew was still spoken by pockets of Jewish communities. When communicating outside of their communities, they reverted to Aramaic. Overall the usage of Hebrew was restricted as liturgical language of Jewish religion. Last vestiges of vernacular Hebrew ceased to exist by the 2nd or 3rd Centuries CE when it got completely supplanted by Aramaic. Since then Hebrew was restricted as liturgical language of Jewish religion as well as certain Jewish philosophical works until the language was revived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

0:44 "Jesus hard a hard time being understood". This is probably more because of the mystical way of speaking, not the language barrier. Keep in mind that although the Holy Family had to flee to Egypt, Joseph and Mary still spoke it. Something that lets you see this logic is reading the verses about when Jesus left the wise men of the Temple mesmerized of his wisdom when he was around 12.

Jesus was a Hellenized Jew. His native language was Aramaic, but he would have been instructed in Hebrew when attending temple. Being a Hellenized Jew, he would have been a bit familiar with Greek, the "English" of its day, and living in a Roman occupied country, it's likely, like most people, he probably picked up a few common Latin phrases.

Kavik v.d.Hexenholtz I don't suppose anything. Neither should anyone else with a subject this important.
Nor should they accept any mans version, not mine and certainly not the version of the admitted killers, without some serious self searching on all fronts, firstly, the Spiritual.
The good news is that Jesus Christ Himself knew and proclaimed (The Gospel of John * examples below) are both quite clear which is why they are never read in sermons, so-called in these days ) who He came for and who He did not come for, is crystal clear. He identified Himself from where He came aa well as the identity and origin of His enemies, both then and now, same folks.
The Words of my Father are sufficient for me, however some may require additional information. The history is all there; the various migrations from and to, as is the archeology, as are various manuscripts and sources, including those records of His murderers, of which there are plenty. Even Pilot's letters to Cesar, ( The Romans were maniacal record keepers -do you suppose Pilot's wasn't detailed or concerned for his own head/position in such a huge and delicate event such as this?) and Caiphus's own
letters- you can smell the desolation in them, he knew he killed God Himself) as well as many others.
*John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, when ye have lifted up the son of Adam, then shall you know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father has taught me, I speak these things.
John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jedeans (True Israelites)
John 8:37 I know ( that you say) you are Abrahams seed; but ye seek to kill me because my word has no place in you.
Once the lying Scribes and Pharisees mis-translations are corrected, we have a clear picture of what was being said to whom. This is a decent enough place to start for a seeker. Its a touchy subject, but its one that cannot be shirked, especially given t
      he lateness of the hour.

We know for sure that Jesus was officially using three languages, which are Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. Greek was his native language, spoken by his community, and the majority of local population. Latin was the official language of the government, which he used to communicate with the authorities. Hebrew was a language of the priests, which he used for theological and liturgical purposes. Aramaic was also a popular language amongst the local population and the priests, so it was most likely spoken by Jesus, but it was rather a secondary language, because we can't confirm it like we can confirm the other languages.

Jesus may have spoken and understood Aramaic. However it is difficult to know for certain his chosen most spoken tongue, though the catholic church believes he spoke Nazarene Aramaic.
The New Testament however was copied by the disciples disciples into mostly Greek and most of the Old Testament came from Hebrew and only some Aramaic.
The region could even be considered multilingual like Arizona (several Indian tongues, Mexican and other types of hispanic) and Florida (type of hispanic Cuban/Puerto Rican as well as other Native tongues) But though considered multi lingual the prime langue is still English.
Since Jesus spoke to Romans such as Pilate and the Centurion and it's unlikely they spoke Aramaic so Jesus most certainly spoke Greek and POSSIBLY in a stretch Latin but very thin. AND, Hebrew is considered the true language of the Jews AND Jesus read at Synagogue so he most likely knew AND spoke Hebrew. He spoke with Samaritans who's main language was Hebrew so it's most likely again that he spoke Hebrew.
Of course being Divine he would know all languages BUT going through a life of man he may have at least had to learn them while here. So did he speak Aramaic? Probably but it's far more likely that the King of Jews chosen language would have been. Hebrew then Greek. But, we don't know for certain and this is all really just for fun as it wasn't important and only the message of Jesus who is the son AND is also God,,,, Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost is what truly matters. Great short video

Jesus WAS Jewish (by descent), also considered himself a Jew (by faith), of course he knew Hebrew, he had to learn the Torah and Talmud, the whole reason he was crucified was that he considered himself to be the second coming of Moses (which would still be "technically compliant" with the Jewish faith because such an event was predicted in the Torah, it's just that the majority of the community didn't believe that he's the one), he actually intended to reform judaism instead of forming a new religion, what is this BS about him "meeting Jews in Egypt and learning Hebrew from them"? Jesus Christ's language was only Aramaic (also known as Syriac) and used Aramaic Old Testament. Not Greek or Hebrew. Aramaic New Testament (Aramaic Eastern Peshitta) is actually the original New Testament which was later translated into Greek by Greek scholars who knew Greek and Aramaic. Aramaic Old Testament available today is known as Aramaic Peshitta Tanakh. Josephus points out his nation didn't encourage the learning of Greek and Hebrews knowing Greek were extremely rare in first century AD (Antiquities of Judeans XX, XI).
Mattathias, his 5 sons, and their Hebrew supporters defeated Seleucid Dynasty and kicked Hellenism out of Israel which we read in 1 Maccabees. They also were in alliances with the Romans and the Spartans who opposed Seleucids (1 Maccabees 8, 1 Maccabees 12, 1 Maccabees 14). In 142 BC, Israel became fully independent under Simon (the brother of Judas Maccabeus) and it was Government of Israel. Government of Israel became Kingdom of Israel in 104 BC. Starting from 63 BC, Kingdom of Israel became semi-autonomous with Romans when the Romans (under Pompey) conquered Jerusalem in support of Hyrcanus II and threw out Hyrcanus II's younger brother Aristobulus II who was in power.
Aramaic completely replaced Old Hebrew as the language of Hebrews during Babylonian Captivity. Hebrew was revived only during Bar Kokhba revolt (132 AD to 135 AD) by False Messiah Simon Bar Kokhba as part of his false messianic idealogy. This Hebrew is called Mishnaic Hebrew which evolved and later became Masoretic Hebrew. Masoretic Hebrew was used to write Hebrew Old Testament (also known as Hebrew Masoretic Text) which was written several centuries after Jesus Christ.
