- Winter can be tough on honeybees, it's our job as beekeepers to make sure they always have food during the winter. There is a lot of variables to beekeeping but one we can control is feeding. Don't let your bee starve this close to spring.

Hey Jason! Nothing like a nice sunny day without the wind howling and get out to do some work. Great advice - feedem if ya got em. Impressive that little nuc surviving those temps, that HiveAlive fondant with the good pupulation, they pulled it off no problem. Hard working man like you, I would be surprised if you own a pair of short pants. Well, maybe if they sell them at Tractor Supply. . . . and I haven't seen any there when I'm shopping for my wardrobe. LOL
Hey Darren, Good to see you here this morning! Yesterday we reached nearly 60°F but it rained most of the day. So now the snow is gone and we have layers of mud. I'm really for frozen ground again or snow, mud makes everything messy. I hate destroying pastures just to feed hay bales but I have no choice. Then I use a wood dolly to bring in firewood, now that's leaving tracks I have to clean up. At least the snow tracks were clean! 🤣
I actually haven't wore my shorts in a few years. Ticks are a serious issue up here in the summer. I could switch to shorts after morning farm chores but I'm getting to where that is too much work. lol Most of my short pants are cut off jeans. lol
Dziękujemy.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the super chat, much appreciated! 😊
Looking forward to spring!! 🐝 🐝 🐝
I'm looking forward to it too! 😊
As always good, helpful video and as always, you are appreciated! Glad your back in the saddle brother. I know it's time consuming doing these videos, especially with all the other things you do in life, but thanks again Jason!
I really appreciate the support! Thanks for cheering me on!!
Good to see a video again! Thanks just checking a couple yards and the girls are taking some cleansing flights... have an amazing day!
Hey Dean,
I'm trying to keep after it on the videos! 😊
Glad to hear your out checking yards and seeing the ladies fly.
You have a great day, too!
Thanks Jason
You would think when you opened the top of that nuc, those bees that were at the patty would have shot down into the frames trying to get away from that cold draft. They just continued on what they were doing👍🏼
Keep warm🥶
Hey Ted,
Pretty cool, huh? Bees are tough! 💪Them ladies probably just cycled out of the cluster or fondant bag looking for some fresh air. Did you notice the frost on the lower corners of the feeding shim?
Warmer days are here! ☀️
Take care!!
Checked mine two weeks ago and winter Pattie’s were almost gone! Making more this weekend!!
I hope they had enough for the cold spell! I am sure they will be glad to see you bring more patties. 😊
I am getting ready to suit up right now and go check on my hive. I put a 4 lbs sugar bricks on last week. I use hive alive and a bit of water to make the bricks. I made another 4lb batch to add today if they need it. Excited for spring. I also believe I have a dead out. I plan on bringing that down to the house and extracting any honey. I plan on running a resource hive this year. Happy to see a new video!
Sounds like your right on track with beekeeping duties, good job!! I couldn't believe how much my bees ate during that cold spell, wow!
Have fun extracting!!
Thank you Jason..
Hello Ruth, I thought I better remind everyone to go check them. Never know when the next cold blast could be here.
Appreciate your videos Jason.
I'm glad you enjoy them!
Good stuff Jason
Thanks!
I had 20 hives and 2 nucs going into winter. I have added food twice. Sugar bricks under my quilt boxes. I lost 2 hives and one nuc. Last year I had 70 percent survival. This year is doing better. I live in Easter Iowa. My nucs were 5 over 5. My first year going into winter with nucs.
Do you do 5 over 5 nucs? Or single 5 nucs? What I'd your success getting them through winter?
I do both single 5 framers and 5 over 5's. I don't really notice much difference in overwinter either one except one goes through more food. My success rate varies but it averages around 75%. I'm so ready for spring so I can work on making splits. We don't have too long!
We started grinding our own powdered sugar and mixing in zip lock bags with honey. How much is Hive Alive Fondant? Save some cash.
That's an idea 😮
I'd be concerned about the cornstarch in the powder sugar it can cause issue for bees. Usually powder sugar is only used to dust bees and in that case they aren't consuming large amounts. Cornstarch can cause digestive issues. I double checked with Google before replying back to you so I know it is a concern. Be cautious my friend!
I like the fondant patties cause they are easy and save me steps. Plus they have Hive Alive in them which really does keep the bees in good health.
