"but then I thought that when I was riding dirt jumps at the track" - you are hilarious! Thanks for the great vid! Surprisingly casual and useful. I've always thought one had to have a rear rack for long trips (which I don't like), but your setup proved it wrong.
Another informative video. Love the way you throw some of the items onto the floor after explaining what they are! Such an inspiration.... always so cheerful; keep the videos coming !!
REALLY good. Informative, touches on the key factors about what makes good kit (cheap, light, durable, pick any two). Also, good point about a decent down jacket. I bought my PHD Minimus in 2010. It's been on every car camping, cycle touring and backpacking trip since then. It's still going strong.
As usual another great video Juliet. Have yet to go bikepacking but I was in the Army. May I suggest you get a silk sleeping bag liner? They take up hardly any room and they add a little extra warmth to your bag.
I have the Helinox Chair Zero... Super small and only weighs a pound. I can't say how nice it is to sit in an actual chair at the end of the day. Definitely worth the extra pound. Otherwise, great equipment and pack job. Love your setup.
@@Dakota.Covers I have a back rack and I can just strap the chair on top of my pannier bags. I like to have easy access to it so I can just pop it up on a random snack stop, haha.
Nice vid :) nice lightweight setup I did buy the same merino jacket from pedaled few months ago and Im gona take it on my 3,5month US/Canada bikepack trip in a month :)
Do you ever find a want to have a small , light , camping chair when bike camping for around a fire socializing . Thanks again for another great video.
it funny but coming from motocross for most of my youth until 32 , then mountain biking for the rest until now, I discovered bikepacking doing the West Highland Way this year, and now I'm hooked big time. Have so many trips planned on Komoot 🤣 the satisfaction of bike packing is hard to explain to friends , and I still find it hard to find the right words to explain how I feel about it. It also gives me the opportunity to buy camping gear which I have always loved. Great video 😃always love a good gear list to give me insight and ideas.
Since I've started watching your videos my wife greets me every morning with "mooooning!" and I absolutely love it. So, thanks for that morning routine haha (I'm German by the way... 😄)
Was very keen to try Firepot meals after seeing this, then bummed to find they seemed to UK-only (I'm in US). Fast forward to this past weekend, when I found one at REI (Porcini Mushroom Risotto), and took it backpacking. One of the best dehydrated meals I've had! Thank you for the recommendation, Juliet!
Nice setup! And you should take the sleeping bag out of compressing bag and put it to big storage bag. Otherwise, you would be needed to replace it much much earlier
Great vid, amazing amount of gear packed really well! I haven't had the nerve to go bike packing yet but feel inspired by your chirpy vid. I think it is always worth spending the extra money for the good quality gear as long as you are happy you are going to use them plenty. Take care and keep the vids coming.
You mentioned being a bit cold whilst sleeping and I didn’t see that you had a sleeping bag liner with you? I use a Rab silk liner in black. Keeps your bag clean and adds a bit of insulation too. I also use my down jacket wrapped around my legs or torso for a little extra heat. Of course a warmer sleeping bag is the best solution really, I have the Rab Nutrino 800. It’s a beaut! It’s nice to have options, but I’ve been cold too many times, so I don’t do that anymore. Hope you enjoy you’re riding and camping this summer, maybe I’ll see you out there. Take care and enjoy.
Great video again Juliet, I've also seen Laura's which is also worth a watch if anyone hasn't seen it. I'm planning on trying to do a couple of bikepacking trips this year hopefully. I've been gradually buying and building up a bit of a set up and I'm almost there now. Yours and Laura's videos have helped me massively One question though which I haven't seen included in quite a few others videos of backpacking.... what do you do about the toilet situation whilst out on these multi day trips, I can't be bringing a portaloo along with me on a trailer 🤣🤷♂️
In the UK you're rarely so remote you won't pass a toilet at some point during the day. Most people pee in the wild and hold anything else till they're at a toilet. Otherwise you could take a spade designed for this purpose - dig a hole and cover
Fair play bike packing the SDW. Finally got round to it a few years ago and wish I'd not bikepacked it. Alot of the climbs I was off and pushing with the extra weight. Wouldnt mind riding it again with just a day pack.
Nice to see I have so much kit the same! (i live close to an Alpkit shop...) .... you didn't seem to have much spare room for carrying food. I carry a lightweight Exped dry bag type rucksack that I can carry food in from the shop to a camp, then when it is not in use it rolls up really small and can be tied on somewhere. Being a dry bag it also seems to come in useful for putting the odd thing in if necessary at other times. Other people carry musettes just to put some food in when needed.
I am more of a motorcycle guy but you are always fun to watch, and have some good tips. But I must say that once I heard about the pirate outfit I felt a little cheated. Good video
Your setup looks dialed in nicely, i like the hip bag , to remove water from hip bag, im sure you have already tried, have u thought about two stem bottle podsac type thingies either side of stem bag , I managed to get them on either side of stem bag and really useful for bits , waterbottles, cans of coke ! 😃 oh mini cheeses , hot chocolate and horlicks sachets 🤣
Another great video, your gear is so efficient, how many days did you bike pack for and what kind of food did you take? Is it international talk like a pirate day or is this a British thing?
We only went for three days. I didn't take much food, we went to cafes once a day usually and brought along stuff like flapjack and dried fruit plus dehydrated meals for the evening. Brixham Pirate Festival is amazing and quote unique I think!
Laura had one. I mentioned the charger in this video! We only took a couple of dinners and some snacks. There are pubs and cafes from time to time on this route
Great video Juliet. I've got lots of ultralight hiking gear that I think would be good for bike packing, just can't find a bar bag that wants to fit in standard road bike drop bars. Anyone got a good recommendation for 400mm road bars? Saddle bag and frame bag fits, just cant find a bar bag that's big enough to be useful and small enough to not interfere with Shimano STI levers.
Another great vid Juliet! Particularly like the mix of bags you have to get the ones you like. How do the Apidura bags compare to the Restrap? Saw the restrap at the bike show and they looked very well thought out. Just got back from a hike on Offas dyke. 4 days and 14/15k bag on my back, walking, I definately need lighter gear and less!!!
Great setup I ended up going with fidlock’s on the bike haven’t had any issues with them popping off and they allow for a revelate design half frame tangle bag they twist off magnetically so you can get it into tight spaces also they have a zip up cargo box that attaches with same system which is pretty cool.
I used to have a set of restrap bags, have an issue with the top tube bag and handle bar bag. The iteration of my toptube bag was using 2 pieces of velcro straps to hold on to the headtube, but they detatch all the time then the bag will fall to the side, I borrowed a stapler to tack them together but it failed mid ride, at the end i just shove the whole thing in other bag. Then comes the handle bar bag, i guess it will work well with round bars but definitely not aero bar, the straps will get loose no matter how tight you strap them up, mine got loose during a descend and it's dangling over the front wheel, tyre just ripped through the bag before i pull over. Definitely not recommended if no update was made
It seems like ages since your last video (although it probably isn't 😀) Thanks so much for another great one - you are so inspiring. Good luck in your next race coming up. Will we be able to 'dot watch' you? (I have no idea how to do it mind you but I'll definitely find out if I have to!
No. It's certainly expensive. I've gradually built up this kit and I intend to use all of it until it falls apart. Which should take a long, long time.
It’s amazing what you can carry on your bike.. I would take a merino wool hat. Another cracking video… Hope the kids don’t make you walk the plank.. 🏴☠️ 🏴☠️ 😃
This is the one area where I struggle. Shorter rides mean I can just stick a rucksack on my back to accommodate stuff along with the bike bags. However, I'm currently prepping for a 6 day, 260 mile ride & really don't want anything on my back. Just can't seen to get it right!
We are off to do Edinburgh-Inverness 22-26/7 August so I am checking out your videos and suggestions for bikepacking. About 420km for 4-5 days. Whatever comes! For now, my no 1 item is wetties and deodorant as my luxury item :)
Hi Juliet, nice compact setup! What model is the dakine hip pack pls ? Not sure if your water bottle holders are standard or something you added after ?
I would suggest you to go to Geneva and set sail (ahoy pirate), no, actually ride your bike along Eurovelo 17 to Andermatt. Eventually you'll be passing near Matterhorn. From Andermatt continue along Eurovelo 15 to Basel. The whole route should be very beautiful so you'll gett a lot of material for your channel. I hope I'll do it some day if I survive but would also like to see someone else riding it.
