2:03 water tank. This is what we intend to carry on the Rallys. We've got the Bikerz Bits rear racks installed. We're in Australia, and not on the coast or heavily populated areas, so carrying water is essential. If we need fuel more than water, we can always swap out one water for one fuel, but it's always been we'd rather have the water onboard than the fuel.
This is an excellent video, very comprehensive and still to the point, thanks! Mine is mounted on top of my CRF250L rear rack (high center of gravity, but relatively simple).

Yup. It was a bit of ‘they put these mounting points on, do they work’ and part ‘while in the US in January, I can get the bits without the international shipping’! Or I can just take it in case I’m out riding with someone on an L and they run out 😁. I bought a wall mount with the height extender too, which might go in the van or the garage to store a couple of fuel cans out of the way.
Gosh, you produce a wonderfully complete video, thanks. Sadly, RotoPax is a truck centric company and adapting this to motorcycles is an afterthought. The weight of their hardware is ridicules. If I go to this system, I will machine lighting holes in the hardware. I could easily cut the 4.5lbs in haft. I would also like to see RotoPax provide a spicket replacement for the water bottle. Then you could leave the water bottle mounted on the vehicle and access the water like a tap.
It is. I'll try it with the stock chain cover, and I'm also seeing if I can get the Zeta one, as that looks even smaller. The one I have on the bike at the moment is the H2C aftermarket one, and it is extra unsprung weight so I was thinking of a change anyway.

I’ll probably wait until I have an actual long journey to do though… Sorry to hear about the TA. Those electrical gremlins can be a pain. Might be something simple like a wire that’s rubbed and is shorting out. I hope you find it!

Hello sir, Sometimes when i look for something once in a while YT find my way back to you.💪 Allthough i did not buy a CRF Rally but a Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition. Was looking for a fuelcannister for taking some spare fuell with me. Going to Turkey and Armenia in a few months. Will not constantly ride with the extra fuell but only when i am going into a remote place. I have H&B pannierracks. Many many years ago made a bracket so i could mount an Acerbis one gallo can. Now i have 2 cans mounted next to each other on the inside of the right rack. But not sure if 6.6 liter will be enough. A few years ago i had troubles with such a cannister as you are using. But now i am not sure anymore that it was a Rotopax. It used the same mountingsystem. I constantly needed to open it to repressurise. And after a week it also started to leak. Does the head of those twi bolts not destroy your softbags ? And that metal plate ? Is the mounting to the racks really that sturdy ? It will get lots of beating while doing offroad. And will it not ever make contact with the chain-protector ? That could be dangerous. Had that once on my xt660 while going to a pothole. O man, i got launched from the bike. But i was lucky not to break any bones. Be really sure that this is out of the question. Thx for the video and safe travels.
Hi Kees, I’m delighted that the algorithm is working and keeps bringing you back to the channel (even if it’s the right racks, on the wrong bike!) I’ve not had problems with the Rotopax leaking (yet…) I know that they are quite heavy and robust and designed for this purpose, so I’m hoping it won’t but we shall see. The bolts clear the soft bags, so no problems there so far. As for the off-road beating, until I have a hard off, I don’t think I’ll know. I expect that it would damage them, as I’ve had some offs on other bikes with similar racks and they did bend or break, so I don’t think these would be any different. I guess all that energy has to go somewhere. As for the chain protector, it looks tight, and I asked OM. They said there was 20mm clearance, I think there’s less but again, so far I haven’t had any problems and though tight, I think it does clear it. Enjoy the 901!
Great videos, but can't help thinking you've bought a light weight adventure bike, and that's how it should stay, throw over panniers, roll bag and good to go, if you keep going as you are, you might as well gone and bought a tenere 700, with almost 3 times the power, don't get wrong think your channel is great, and keep it up.
I’m just trying stuff really. Even with all this stuff on, it’s still 40kg+ lighter than a T700. And I already have a R1250GS. If I had to give up the CRF and the GS, I’d look at the Tenere. I have ridden one and I thought it was a great bike and fun to ride, but it’s too heavy for a trail bike and underpowered for a long distance tourer. I’m sure it has a purpose, but I thought it was too much of a compromise of both and ended up being a Jack of no trades rather than all.
I have a tail tidy, and have removed the toolbox. (You have to remove the toolbox to fit the pannier frames.) Not sure either help with the swingarm clearance.
Hey man thx for the video, what exhaust is that? cause im searching for a good open pipe exhaust with a better flow then stock but not a real loud one ive bought the dominator mx full system but it's WAAAAAY to loud and i'am sending it back. Might think of modding the stock exhause but not sure yet.
Hey, I initially switched to a MotoX titanium from Thailand. It was ok, much lighter than stock, but also louder and it felt a bit like it was down on power at the top end (I never dyno’d it so it was a feeling only) so I switched to the homologated Arrow Thunder. I also have a cat installed so it’s fully road legal. It’s also lighter than the MotoX and though it has a nice sound, it’s not loud lower down the Rev range. I can pass horses on the road off the throttle with them barely noticing me. You can use the Arrow without a cat, and I expect it’ll be quieter than a race pipe, but I haven’t tried that myself.
@@PeakMotorcycles after i have posted the comment i saw ur video on the moto x with the db testing it looked pretty promising but u still swapped to the arrow exhaust interesting. Ive searched the web for arrow exhausts i find them no problem but do you by any chance still have a link to that exhaust you are running cause they have a couple different ones. Also did u buy a full system or just the slip on? U think modding the stock exhaust by shortening the db killer isnt a option? Thanks a bunch 💪
@@Andriesdemotorrijder mine is the Thunder Titanium and it’s the full system with the CAT. They also do a conical one, but I wasn’t sure how well my heat shield would fit to the conical silencer so went for the straight one.
I think you did a great job putting this all together. I’m just wondering if there’s a way to mount the Rotopax to the front crash bars. Looks like you’re getting the Rally expedition-ready.
Thanks Allen. I’m sure a rail mount bracket could be made for the front, but I think with the bars there’s already too much weight up there. I’m also not sure I’d want the fuel tank to take the hit if I fell off. It would certainly be handy for filling though.

What is the bracket that you mounted to the pannier rack? This could be useful for me but I don’t see that piece listed on their website and you didn’t say what that was.
Hi Richard, they call it a Rotopax Bracket! This is the link to it on their UK site, but I’m sure it’s available on the international sites too. outbackmotortek.co.uk/product/rotopax-bracket-for-pannier-racks/ You still need to buy the Rotopax fitting to attach a can. This item is the alloy plate and the 4 fittings to attach it to the pannier frame.
Looks Awesome, I really like the set up....... BUT! have you weighed the entire set up?????? The Bags with Gear, Out back Racks & Plates, Roto pack mounting hardware and fuel cans with fuel... Given the CRF 300 doesn't use a removable sub frame IF it fails you will be forced to replace the entire bike frame or have it Welded........ Just a concern I have with such a light bike and me in my 212 lbs birthday suit PLUS Gear sitting on it....
I haven’t but the subframe on the 300 is a lot different to the 250. Someone should do a short video looking at it 😁. So far I’m not aware of any subframe failures on the 300 so far, and that includes folks who have loaded up a lot more than I have. Time will tell of course, but we shall see. I’ll let you know if I break it!
Are there any mufflers/exhausts for this motorcycle that would move the muffler and/or exhaust pipes out of the way in order to install a 2nd fuel tank on the opposite end? I'd feel more comfortable not offsetting the weight to one side.
Not that I know of. Though I don’t really notice the fuel tank on one side only. 5kg of fuel balances out the exhaust a little and the rest can be managed with how you pack your luggage.
Do the bolt heads on the brace rub against the Pannier bag? May have to cover them. Could you pack out the rack with washers to bring it out a enough to clear the guard?
Hi Chris, not quite, but now I’m thinking perhaps I should use the extra round mount which came with the RotoPax. That would stand it off a few mm on the inside to make getting the pannier on easier, and also comes with flatter headed bolts to secure. I’ll try it and if it works, will don’t a part II.

Hi, I have different sized panniers, but that’s mainly due to the exhaust sticking out on the right side of the bike. The right pannier frame is further out so putting the narrower pannier there keeps the with the same amount on each side. I put all my heavy things (chain, tools etc.) in the smaller pannier so the weight is balanced. I’m not familiar with how pannier frames would look on a Tiger 800, but if the same on both sides then the same sized panniers should be fine.
@@PeakMotorcycles The Tiger is the same, an asymmetrical set-up, so I'm looking at the 34/24L split, although I've read on forums that you can go with same-sized bags and it's not a problem since you can pack them differently, as you say.
Great information. My intention is to use Zega bags mounted to the Outback Motortek frames. Any chance the outside loop frames are 245mm x 350mm on the OM product? I know both Touratech and OM use 18mm tubing - the difference being OM powder coats and Touratech uses Stainless Steel for their frames. Keep the videos coming.
@@PeakMotorcycles I don't think that the 5mm will be an issue. I can fabricate new upper clamp straps if required. Thank you. On another note - did you notice the small finger protruding from the nozzle of the Rotopax container? With the nozzle inserted into the tank opening that finger can be rested on the top of the filler neck and aid in depressing the spring in the nozzle assembly. By lifting the container the fuel flow can then be stopped as required.
Hi Phil, are they Triumph OEM pannier frames, or OM frames? If OM there’s a better chance, but as I’ve never tried, asking them is probably a safer option. Apologies.
I’m not sure. I think that would be too big. Are they the same thickness? Any thicker and I think it would catch the swingarm. If you put the Rotopax mount on the outside you could, or even 2x 1 gal on top of each other with a smaller bag beside them?
Hi Just to let you know the xframe plate is put on back to front there is bevelled eges which should lye on the frame so it fits flush and does not stick out !! .
Thanks. Someone else mentioned that. Though on the Outback Motortek website it’s fitted like mine. Also, if you fit it the way you suggested, the RotoPax is then 10mm closer to the swingarm. It might still clear it, but it’s tight already. Have you fitted yours the way you mentioned, and if so, any clearance problems for the Rotopax on the swingarm?

Depends if it’s bolt or socket. 1”=25.4mm so a 1/2” would be 12.7mm. You can probably use a 1/2” socket on a 12mm bolt but it’ll be a bit loose. A 12mm socket won’t fit a 1/2” bolt though. You’d have have to use a 13mm socket instead. So yes, a 1/2” socket is the same as a 12.7mm socket, but those are harder to find than a 10mm socket that disappears into a dark corner of a workshop! 🤣
Someone else said that… I have it on the same way as they have it on the website. I tried it the other way but it sticks out even further on the inside…

A tail tidy would help give you more room probably
Also removing the standard plastic toolbox carrier would also help

Could a fuel tank be installed on both sides of those panniers? I like to travel long distances without pit stops if possible.

I don’t think so. The exhaust is on the other side. If you need extra capacity, perhaps one of the Giant Loop soft fuel packs would work?

I know both Touratech and OM use 18mm tubing - the difference being OM powder coats and Touratech uses Stainless Steel for their frames. Keep the videos coming.
Hi, measured and outside dimensions are 350x250 on the OM frames. Is that 5mm too high?
@@PeakMotorcycles I don't think that the 5mm will be an issue. I can fabricate new upper clamp straps if required. Thank you. On another note - did you notice the small finger protruding from the nozzle of the Rotopax container? With the nozzle inserted into the tank opening that finger can be rested on the top of the filler neck and aid in depressing the spring in the nozzle assembly. By lifting the container the fuel flow can then be stopped as required.

Hi Phil, are they Triumph OEM pannier frames, or OM frames? If OM there’s a better chance, but as I’ve never tried, asking them is probably a safer option. Apologies.

I’m not sure. I think that would be too big. Are they the same thickness? Any thicker and I think it would catch the swingarm. If you put the Rotopax mount on the outside you could, or even 2x 1 gal on top of each other with a smaller bag beside them?
Hi Just to let you know the xframe plate is put on back to front there is bevelled eges which should lye on the frame so it fits flush and does not stick out !! .
Thanks. Someone else mentioned that. Though on the Outback Motortek website it’s fitted like mine. Also, if you fit it the way you suggested, the RotoPax is then 10mm closer to the swingarm. It might still clear it, but it’s tight already. Have you fitted yours the way you mentioned, and if so, any clearance problems for the Rotopax on the swingarm?

but whats the difference between 1/2 inch socket or 12mm?is the same man!
Depends if it’s bolt or socket. 1”=25.4mm so a 1/2” would be 12.7mm. You can probably use a 1/2” socket on a 12mm bolt but it’ll be a bit loose. A 12mm socket won’t fit a 1/2” bolt though. You’d have have to use a 13mm socket instead.
So yes, a 1/2” socket is the same as a 12.7mm socket, but those are harder to find than a 10mm socket that disappears into a dark corner of a workshop! 🤣
