For me, Soma by Frictional Games. One of the most atmospheric gaming experiences I had.
Frictional games is a great studio, the original amnesia game is one of my favorites too
The ending of that game lives in my head constantly. It's such an amazing game!
It Takes Two is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played. It was a blast from start to finish, with tons of variety, a good story and wholesome humor :D
I'd agree, but playing with someone who hasn't played video games, the platforming part is quite frustrating due to the need to control the movement, camera and perform actions.
The game is certainly fun and enjoyable, but certain sections are quite bothersome and requiring me sometimes to play for two because my partner is not experienced enough to be able to move the character, camera, aim, shoot and jump at the same time.

Yeah it's impressing me with how original and fun they're able to make things especially bosses after all this time without feeling like it's been done before.

I lost my best friend last August. A year before he passed, he brought over A Way Out to my apartment. I wasn't exactly excited to play the game, but he was, so I decided to give it a shot. The amount of fun we had over the next two days I will never forget. The two characters felt like they were tailored perfectly for our respective personalities. Him going Charlie in It's Always Sunny wildcard on some of the missions, me trying to redirect the chaos and salvage the objective. A lot of the fun wasn't even related to the gameplay. I vividly remember watching him chase chickens at this farmhouse and cracking up endlessly. This game will always hold a special place in my heart for those two days of memories. RIP Jon
The Banner Saga (all 3 of them), Frostpunk, Disco Elysium, Outward (though the start of that game is harder to get into than Dragon's Dogma) and also, I'm not sure if people would agree that this AA but it is BY FAR the game I've devoted the most time to ever, and that's Stellaris. If you like 4x games, nothing beats Stellaris.
While i have enjoyed stellaris for hundreds of hours, the full game is a lot more expensive than the base game

Dragon's dogma has a lot of innovative mechanics
Played on the 360 era, killed Grigori, found BBI very hard and gave up. Its a complex game for begginers.
Played again last year on ps4 and had a blast, BBI content is soooo good.
Imagine that kind of dungeon crawling on PS5 and XSX!
I tried getting into it but the game is just so confusing

Those AA games are the real AAA games for me, because they shine with what all the big titles often lack: focus.

Plague Tale was truly fantastic and Surge 2 has the best timed block / parry system I've ever seen with incredible level design. Now I also have to take a look at Pyre, I'm intrigued.

Loved seeing Space Marine here. It's is a very clunky but very, very fun 40k game that I hope people don't forget.
It was the first game I rented when I got my 43in plasma TV back in the day. It looked so good, and as a WH40K player, I played the bejezus out of it.

Dragons dogma had the best action rpg combat and still holds up well now surprisingly. Plus the pawn system was pretty awesome. Super fun game
The fact I can have this on Switch and conveniently carry it around is also amazing.

100% agree, had some amazing moments in game, and runs smooth as butter on Switch (only play handheld) Capcom
@@DV-ou1yu I disagree bud, W3 struggles, and isn't pretty docked I assume (handheld only here) but damn it holds up well, load times and horrible cut scenes aside, I had a blast playing it and still do now and then.
@@Grumpy-Bollocks Never tried W3 on Switch, but I assume it must feel awkward in handheld mode as anything not turn-based in that mode has me panicking lol Switch pro controller ftw!!!
Witcher 3's gameplay for me isn't that great imo. I remember despising it in 2015 until they gave us faster movement which then made it tolerable and fun in certain stretches. Like I can get use the the clunk, jank, and slow movements after a while, but then after playing something like Ghost of Tsushima or Sekiro....W3's felt even more antiquated.
I think the best way to put it is Dragon's Dogma plays great out the gate while W3 is more of an acquired taste...what you think? 😬😬😬😰

It's really not confusing. I've always perfectly understood indie, AA or AAA. It's a pretty simple concept
Can confirm Greedfall deserves some love. Aside from the very cool, unique setting and story, the combat can actually be refreshing as well. Especially if you eschew traditional sword combat and make a more off-kilter build focused on traps, guns and magicks. Give it a try.
I REALLY enjoyed Sherlock Holmes. Great game! Surprised Hellblade wasn't on this list though.
Remnant is so good. It really transcended it's rough launch. The RNG rogue-lite mode is really fun.

AA games that dares to do stuff differently are generally hitting home with me. Doesn't matter if they nail every aspect, as long as they nail parts of it.

Greedfalls' story and setting are second to none! (for a AA)

The Evil Within 2, The Surge 2, Outlast 2, and Prey 2017 are my favorite AA titles from recent memory
I would also recommend Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice all the way up there. Still one of the best gaming experiences and stories I've had the pleasure of being awed with. It hit me so hard. Wish I could play it all over again for the first time.

So glad you mentioned Crimes and Punishments. That's the BEST detective game ever made imo, far better than anything in LA Noire or the rest of the SH series. I highly recommend this if you really want to feel like a detective. The cases won't hold your hand, you can't brute force your way to the "right" perpetrator, and you can play without knowing for sure or reveal a hidden option AFTER you've finished the case to see if you were right. There's no more empowering feeling than finding out you made the right choice, nor crazier feeling than finding out you sentenced the WRONG person to death or prison for life.
I'll shout out Elex, which is getting a sequel soon. I wasn't expecting much, and I got the best open world RPG experience since New Vegas. Great list man.
Needed first person imo, the character model doesn't look good enough to make me stare at it for 30 hours.
Nothing beats cleaning up cannibals' camp in a vain hope of finding that lady who sent distress signal, to the whimsical tune of "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" cover.

Yasss Space Marine, one of the biggest crimes in gaming history was not getting a sequel to it. It just needed a few refinements and could have been amazing.
Great translation of the Minor League Baseball system to Videogames. I have never thought of it in this way.

Oh my god… the council, during the pandemic that’s the game the made me sway away from live service gaming. It made me get into assassins creed and other historical games (vampyr, plague tale) and really broadened by gaming tastes to end up here on ACG
I have so much love for Spiders, the studio. Yes, the games have a healthy amount of eurojank, yes they miss more often than they hit, and yes they bite off more than they can chew - BUT: They try. They're super ambitious with their games, and their concepts are always very interesting. Mars: War Logs and The Technomancer, while not great games, have some of my favorite worldbuilding/theme of any games. They never play it safe with their games, and I adore them for that. And one of these days, they'll have the budget, luck and chutzpah needed to get a true hit.
Great video. Plague Tale Innocence is first game I have ever bought (like 5 minutes after watching video) solely based on your review, and it was my favorite PS4 game of 2019. Just wrapped up 2nd playthrough on PS5 yesterday.
I like that you really got into these and gave mini-reviews, but you needed a brief honorable mention list, like Hallow Knight or Ori, Life is Strange, or even something like Strider. Some really good AA titles.
Love that you called out Tower of Monsters. I think it was a PS Plus game one month, and I loaded it up and was like what the heck, but I played it through as I kept wondering more what next strangeness was going to be presented.

Obsidian's The Outer Worlds is one of m favorite AA games of all time. I'm excited to see what they can do with full AAA funding now...
It was a delight to play, but to me at least the linear story and tiny maps really held it back. As you say, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Avowed., and eventually the sequal :)
@@oplawlz I've read that Terra 2 (Emerald Vale, Roseway, Byzantium) were all supposed to be connected by a large overworld map, like Monarch, but was split up due to time and budget constraints. So I imagine the sequel won't have the same problem.

Remnant was so much fun, especially playing with a friend.
I really enjoyed it as well BUT the toggle to sprint made me stop playing it. What an odd decision to make. Toggle instead of hold to sprint. 🤦♂️
When he got to A Way Out I was HOPING he would mention It Takes Two.
This game is insanely fun. Don't let the whole "I don't want to see the other person's screen" deter you, it actually helps give that couch coop vibe and makes the puzzles so much better. Instead of just waiting for the other person to do their part you can see everything and often have a hand on it so you're always involved.
And it's hilarious!
Hands down the most fun I've had on a coop game in years and I'm mostly an fps/mmo guy!

Army of Two is a classic. One of the first games I remember playing with my dad. That and res 5 I think
I got a ps3 like 2 years into it's release so all of my gaming was on the PS2, my friend invited me to his house and we played Army of 2 Co-op and it blew my kind, never seen anything like it.
the second he said Dragons Dogma i had to give the man a Like. genuinely the best RPG still to this day.
I remember dropping Void Bastards because something scared me shitless. The ambience in that game gets the job done.
A Plague Tale Innocence, Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice, Vampyr, Dragon's Dogma, Prey and Greedfall are all very underrated and underappreciated titles that deserve to be played. This is why ACG is the best UA-cam channel when it comes to video game related content. Karak appreciates and understands the value of underrated gems and it clearly shows in this video. Otherwise, thanks as always Karak for another great video. I really appreciate the continued hard work!

This is likely my second comment ever on UA-cam, but I had to take the time to explain how refreshing and entertaining your reviews are. I have watched dozens now, with no interest in playing the game, just to hear your remarks. Keep it up.
Surge 2 IMO is the best souls-like non From game. The AA nature of it actually hits the nail on the head for me, mimicking some of the wonkiness of DS1.
Remnant was brilliant, hopefully they fixed the save corruption bug because that's what killed it for us. Space Marine was also awesome.
Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen Remaster...so great...I also played the original release on Xbox 360, love it.
I'd add Rebel Galaxy Outlaw to the list. I had so much fun with it!
I need to get on Dragons Dogma, I've been hearing about it for years. I'm currently playing Greedfall and I like it, the RPG progression is pretty good. I liked Vampyre too, how they incorporated leveling up with sucking the blood of NPC's.
Currently playing Disco Elysium and really digging it. Greedfall is next.
Don't forget the Darksiders series! It's basically Zelda for other consoles!
The Persistence is an excellent AA Rogue like that I enjoyed initially as a VR title, but was given a flat-screen patch and now a next-gen patch for flat screen as well. It can be horrifying and action packed... The closest thing to Event Horizon in a game.
Plus, it has an innovative multi-player component in which someone else uses a companion app to either help or hurt you because they get a birds eye map view and can direct you to safer (or more dangerous!) routes through procedurally generated environments. Lots of persistent upgrades as well, so even a failed run has benefit.
I really want a new Dragon's Dogma game. Imagine the graphics and combat with next gen consoles and PC.

I would say what matters to me is actual unique experiences. Sometimes that does happen in 'AAA' but since the big companies don't take risks, the same way big movie studios don't, you're right that it's 'AA' where my heart is as well.
Their kind hates ice and fire both!
I really loved DD. Especially when some of the later game spells involved summoning meteorites and tornadoes.
Werewolf Earthblood was actually quite decent. As was Biomutant, The Sinking City, Necromunda Hired Gun, Pathologic 2, Visage and Fade To Silence. I could keep going. AA games are now able to be of great quality and are quite easy to make thanks to Unity and UE4/UE5. And get their ideas across even at their limited budget. I think nxt gen will make this even more of a good thing for us. As AA games are where the real games are at these days.
Dragons Dogma! Man I loved that game. Good list. AA games are often made by devs that love games. AAA games are published by companies that want to vacuum your pockets empty.

Wasteland 3 is god tier. Its those games where its waaayy funner to play then to watch. The perfect balance between rpg and survival. The story is dark and amazing. I'm not really into niche games but the game was just so fantastic I was shocked because thought I wouldn't like it as much judging by trailers and gameplay. 10/10.

Dragons dogma is so damn good. I want 2 as bad as elden ring.
I believe It Takes 2 is one of most fun games I’ve played in years. It was impossible to be bored. It was easy enough to play that my wife can enjoy it but the puzzles were challenging enough that it didn’t feel like a child’s game. The different scenarios you go through are so amazing like something out of Pixar movies. I can’t praise the developer’s imaginations and work in this game enough.
ICEY, Bladed Fury, Guacamelee, Rouge Legacy, 20xx, Outriders (that's maybe AA. 5), Inside and Blair Witch are all great AA games that bring solid moment to moment gameplay and/or excellent stories to their limited scope or sometimes janky user experience
IT TAKES TWO is such a masterpiece I hope it inspires many more couch co-op games to follow. Best game to play with a non-gamer girlfriend!
A few months ago I saw Greedfall on Game Pass, decided to install it on a whim. Had no idea what the game was about, I just vaguely remembered hearing about it and the screenshots looked cool. I couldn't put it down and plowed through the whole thing in just two days. It is hands down one of the best WRPGs I've played in years.
Also I've heard that wolves hunt in packs.
A perfect list. Have loved most of them. Wish they’d rebalanced solo mode on Remnant, though. Just too many crazy difficulty spikes to be fun. Shame as it’s such a good game.

I'm going to toss in Mars: War Logs to this, made by the same team as GreedFall. With its gritty setting, dour preset protagonist, and late-game choice that leads to two distinct final acts, it feels like a budget version of The Witcher 2... with even more on the nose writing.
Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana. It's basically what Breath of the Wild would be as a traditional 3D Zelda game, albeit as a full out (and extremely hyperactive) Action RPG, despite coming out on the Vita about a year earlier. Complete with the titular Dana being pretty much exactly what the hypothetical daughter of BotW Link and Zelda would be like.
Anything from Falcom, really. Tokyo Xanadu is basically Persona 3 meets Kingdom Hearts and the entire Trails series is basically an Industrial Age Game of Thrones with Grandia/Persona some game mechanics.
