Dana Carvey is one of the Greatest SNL Cast Members of All Time and he still doesn't get the recognition that he rightfully deserves... he is a Living Comedy Legend!
Agree 100%!
THE best SNL cast member ever.
Completely agree
Agree. Hes great
Legend, constantly funny and charming.
I sing this every time I chop broccoli.
so do i... lol :D
hehe so do I
Me too!
Haha...yep, I do as well!
I sing it every time I see broccoli!!!
The fact he had an orchestra made it more epic.
"There's a lady I know, and if I didn't know her, she'd be the lady I didn't know."
😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I wonder how many audience members knew the original sketch and premise... it's such a classic Carvy sketch/bit...brilliant..
I know.
+Brendan McCaffery exactly. So much better if you know the context. I can picture the stand up original and SNL version. Awesome
Not Sure who's on first it didn't even from the sketch he performed it in his audition then in many of his gigs. It's basically his theme song
He probably had no idea when he first performed the skit decades ago that it would have such a lasting quality.
I love how the orchestra is trying so hard not to laugh.
Wow, the reaction or lack of from the audience when he first started to play told me that 1) They are too young to know this bit or 2) They don't know who Dana Carvey is.
Actually, he added a new verse, so the audience may not have been sure where he was going , since the original performance starts with " Theres a lady I know... if I didnt know her, she'd be the lady... I didn't know.""I thnk thats what threw them off. He didn't start with that verse. Once he got to the famliar verse, they were good.
@@sweetiepie1862 He actually did here the original version of his SNL audition :)
Totally agree, it’s probably both
@@sweetiepie1862 this version was in his comedy special on hbo. It's the one i knew more than the snl skit/audition.
@@dazem8 Oh ok, maybe vice versa for this particular audience though huh?
He was the absolute star of SNL in the mid-late 1980’s. His energy was unparalleled.
I missed him going "She chopped...UH!" but otherwise, this was brilliant.
I was waiting for that too. lol..
me too. where was the CHOP UHH! Thats the best part
that's all I wanted to see 😔
Me three, but this was cool
Ole skool's be waiting on the UHH!!
OMG Dana Carvey never fails to hurt my sides. The Chopping Broccoli always kills me :)
I remember seeing this on Turkey Television in the mid 80's on Nickelodeon... I just teared up a little and was happy to get some of my childhood back... Thanks Jimmy, Thanks Dana :-)
I remember Turkey TV too, who'd think when we were watching TT back then he'd still be doing Choppin Broccili with an amazing orchestra
@@Cavillier1970 I know right?!?!?! hahahaha
Is it just me or is that one of the most beautiful melodies and orchestra pieces?
Definitely just you.
Good song.
"One of the most beautiful"? Nah.
(Subjectively.)
Helps to know this was from Dana's original audition tape for Saturday Night Live.
He sat behind a grand piano and said "This is my impression of a pretentious Rock Star...everything (they) say is suddenly terribly important. It doesn't have to make any literal sense....then they start to sing and the lyrics are so inane it sounds like they're making them up as they go along." and proceeds to perform the bizarre performance you see here. It got him the job, and he performed it in several odd sketches on the show.
As the Church Lady and other great characters, he was a brilliant additional to SNL.
Does anyone know which rock star he was parodying?
@@desanson i don't think he was parodying any particular rockstar, just rockstars in general
In his stand-up in the early '80s he didn't do the angle about "making it up as he goes." That's still my favorite version of the song. The rock star just proceeds to sing these lyrics with complete confidence.
This was dope!! The orchestra took this to another level!! 🔥🔥
“Dude… so amazing as an acoustic…”
The Dude
I feel like the audience wasn't laughing as much as they could have because he didn't explain the joke before he performed
I think they intended it to be that way
Maybe they were to young to get this from SNL from years ago....this is epic!!
Also not everyone knows about the sketch.
I know...
thats makes it even funnier. they probably think its some singer who wrote it as a serious song
True story...the funniest part of this bit was Phil Hartman's non-vocal reaction of enjoying it...that's how funny Hartman was.
and Sigourney Weaver's! Everyone's earnestness is what made it.
Yeah it was. Phil Hartman was so hilarious
I still love Dana Carvey and this skit....a high school favorite!!! LOL I am still laughing...
I got chills . . . With an orchestra, the innate drama in this ballad is almost unbearably overwhelming. All he needs to add is of course the guitar solos. In fact, I was expecting this.
this was one of my first comedic memories! I appreciate this more than you will ever know, tonight show.
Still to this day, whenever I have, or even think about broccoli I think about this song
What amazes me is how the Broccoli industry didn't seize the opportunity to use this Song in it's Ads!
This was a TRUE gem! Haven't heard this song since he did it in on SNL over 20 years ago! Loved it then. Still love it now.
Thanks, Jimmy, for being nostalgic and keeping memories alive!
Sad that most of the audience had no clue who this was or what he was singing.. Only those of us from the 80s can truly appreciate the story behind this performance.
Not just the 80’s, but it sure feels that way, there, with that crowd. There are younger comedy nerds like myself that have ingested as much Dana Carvey as we can. He’s brilliantly funny. Can be childish and still funny or downright blue. I love all of his shades.
you're an idiot. lmao.
Born in 98, my parents and I have been singing this my entire life 🥰
My mom sings it all the time so now I do
Audience = 20 somethings who have no clue about this classic sketch.
That's all of UA-cam actually. These young fucks actually think Gaga is good music and Fallon is funny so of course these assholes don't have a clue where this comes from.
Now now, I'm almost 22 and I've seen the original sketch more than once in all my years of life. One of my favorites from early years of SNL. Dan Carvey is a legend in my book.
I beg to differ. I'm actually a High School student and I know about this classic sketch. But calling people "young fucks" and "assholes"?
The Truth Jimmy Fallon is hilarious. His best thing on SNL was when he would break, but as a talk show host, he's very entertaining. And I'm 21, so I guess I'm a "young fuck", but I'm very familiar with Choppin Broccoli. I was too young to watch/enjoy 90's SNL at the time it was happening, but I became a huge fan later on. I bought the Best of Dana Carvey dvd (and like 7 other Best Of dvd's) when I was in middle school, 90's SNL was (and still is) some of my all time favorite TV.
inthepark002 I've seen it on You Tube try looking under Turkey TV. It was a video clip/ comedy sketch show on Nickeloden back in the 80s. They had stand ups clips, videos, and cartoons of a pilgram trying to shoot a turkey and always failing.
I just made Broccoli for my son, and hearing thing song made him laugh, and enjoy it. Carvey is my favorite all time SNL Cast member
I will always love this song! I used to sing this as a teen. Classic.
I have watched this so many times I cannot count. My 5 year old niece loves it. She has watched it many times.
I love you Dana Carvey! One of my all time favorites to come from SNL :)
Its a shame audience is too young to remember from SNL.
My All Time Fav...Dana Carvey doing "Choppin Broccoli" Love It!
haha - i'm in my early 20s and also recognized this, and was pretty thrilled to see it revisited. a tip for the 40+ old timers - some of us youg'ns know this material because: in the early to mid 2000s, SNL reruns from the late 80s & early/mid/late 90s (the golden age of SNL) were broadcast on Comedy Central pretty constantly (along with stuff like The Critic & Kids In the Hall - it was really a great channel at that point.) many of us watched when were home from middle school, pretending to be sick! but i definitely agree - as i figured, the folks in the studio didn't seem to get it. i guess it's an audience of mostly teens and senior citizens??
I first saw Dana Carvey in the late 80's. He bridged the gap between my older siblings and I. I knew of him before he was on SNL. He is a classic comedian. One of the best. Thank you or having him on your show. #danacarvey
He left out "She chop! Uh."
that actually killed it for me. That was the best part of the song!!!!!
I remember that too! And he would sometimes do "choppin' broccoloo", like all the soft vowel sounds. Funny!!
I think he went into desperately making all kinds of silly voiced noises instead of that because he realized nobody was getting the joke, and he wasn't getting a single laugh.
Still hilarious after all these years. One of my favorites
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️I was Chopin broccoli today and I felt so moved to find this piece of artistry
Funny when I was 15. Hilarious when Im 35.
Easily one of the top skits of all time on SNL. Gold
Love all the violin players holding on the one note waiting to change and he just paused lol.. the guy bending his shoulder is like “come on man haha”
I remember this as a kid.... still kills me.
I wish I used this as my wedding song.. I love the dramatic pauses.. freaking awesome
I love how he made this song up on the fly during a special and now it’s a classic 😂
I waited for , “she chopped uhh” 😟. Loved it either way😂😂😂
Gotta love old school SNL skits #SNL #fallontonight #tonightshowwithjimmyfallon #danacarvey
Song of the year 2014
this song hasn't even crossed my mind in over a decade. now it's bringing back some memories. this is what you call a nostalgia trip
Ladies and gentlemen, Dana Carvey.
Just showed my 3&5yo this video over dinner and a serving of broccoli. They were in stitches. One of my all time favorites.
.....this actually sounds amazing!!!
It actually does even though gangsta rap is my thing 😂
haha i'm an R&B Soul man myself, but this isn't bad at all.
Yeah, there are some exceptions that are like which are not from my favourite genre
hell yeah my nigga.
God, that was one of my favorite sketches growing up! This was AWESOME!!!
OMG..I totally forgot about that skit..That was awesome..lmao
beautiful! ;-) and I love the smiles and laughter from the orchestral performers. And the lady to his left is the lady I didn't know
All I see it Garth. I think we need a Wayne's World 3 already!
I heard they are working on the script
@@cringleclause5241 Are they still working on it?
@@Zizzyyzz yeah I'm still working on it, get off my back already. jesus.
@@NickTheNewbie Lol. Take your time. Guess I don't need to tell you that, though.
I sing this to my preschool student all the time!
this was one of my favorite SNL skits when I was a kid, I always watched this on the Best of Dana Carvey DVD
So much nostalgia! 1st time I heard the original way back when, Dana Carvey made me want to be a comedian. Much love for this update!
I love how much he hams it up here!!
❤ The Sigourney Weaver episode was so funny, he's gotten even better with " The Lady I know " ❤
We have been looking for this song! Thanks for sharing it!
For us Old Schooler's. I remember the original SNL scetch. Watching it with my mom. Laughed so hard. Good start to the day!
This is literally the only reason I would watch anything with Fallon on it.
The Man, The Myth, The Legend, the one an only Dana Carvey. Still funny as always!
Ive waited 20 years for him to sing this again!
I'm looking for a kids broccoli toy, playing this song. He can't go on without it!😂😅
My step-brother and I (90s babies) used to play this before bed on a cassette tape his dad made! No idea it was from SNL until I saw it on the 40th anniversary episode. I always thought I had just made the whole memory up!
Dana, you rock man !!!
I would have completely lost it!!!! 😂😂😂
Never gets old!
missed the infamous part where he goes "she's choppin broccoli..she chop.. UNH..."
Still sad the crowd was so quiet and don't even know of that awesome sketch
Yep I am old enough to remember the original showing of this on SNL. Dana is amazing. Great guy and a comedic genius.
Jimmy Fallon: These are the classics that will outlive us.
Musicians: Seven years at Julliard for THIS!
My favorite song
Loved this sketch on snl….. anytime I see broccoli I think of this song 🤣🤣
I loved that while he was singing, the orchestra was smiling like they're totally trying to hold their laughs and playing so beautifully at the same time like it was a serious fvcking song. Hahaha
i work in los angeles as a waiter i just waited on him hes the nicest guy ever, genuine.
I just did voice to text for White Claws… it changed it to broccoli and it puts this song in a whole new light. 😂
Dana Carvey is still the man.
Listen to this when I make my broccoli pasta lol🤣🤣🤣
EPIC beyond words! I got chills while laughing!
I saw him live when he preformed this. He still makes me belly laugh. Comedy spreads joy and remedies pain. My Fave of all time is "Naked Time".
The org. performance is still one of my all times fav standup shows.
Best clip of the week!! And
Rip Phil Hartman!!
I remember this song from the original sketch. when i was young my family always recorded SNL episodes and this is on it..brings back memories
Wow I remember him doing this skit when I was young. Loved it then and love it now.
So touching
Every time I chop broccoli I giggle to myself and then sing this song.
Watching Jimmy's whole show last night, with Hashtag and Dana -- I haven't laughed that hard in a LONG time. Whew I needed that! My mom and I miss the old SNL!!
Oh! By far one of my favorite sketches from SNL.
I remember one he sang this song one he was younger 😂😂😂and I love how he’s yelling it
I LOVE this!!!!!
I'm 32 today, 7/11, and now I officially feel old. Fallon's audience missed the boat on this classic SNL throwback.
The BEST when SNL actually has a comedic cast that was top notch and worth watching !
Love him ! 😂
Church Lady anyone !?
Classic! Love it!!
love this so much
A Dana Carvey classic!!
My god. It's been forever since I've heard that. Damn I'm old
When this song was originally performed, there were lots of people... But that was a long time ago...
It NEVER gets old! Peace.
This was awesome! Been watching SNL since the beginning, with all the highs and lows. 🤣🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
God I miss this man! I gotta show my Old-School-SNL-Loving family this!
That sketch must have been, what, close to 25 years ago? And the song STILL goes through my head every time I chop broccoli.
