  • Long Island Sound Spring Blackfish on Clams: Remember to visit us at www.thefishingline.com and order any DVD's on the same subject or species. My guest was Capt. James Schneider of the James Joseph party and charter boats of Huntington, Long Island. On this show we delve into the differences between spring and fall blackfishing on Long Island Sound...which are astounding! We cover the differences in bait between seasons, the hook setting techniques, how to fish different bottoms, how to anchor and why, how tog react on wrecks located on mud or silt vs. hard bottom reefs, tackle choices, the stand off leader rig along with our Boating Tip of the Week and much more from one of the best blackfisherman around...Capt. Jimmy Schneider can fish and he holds back no secrets in this episode. Jim gives us some good history on the Sound and how some of the many wrecks got there and and from as far back as Colonial times! We go over our tackle choices and touch base on why light tackle when togging is NOT sportsman like.

    Awesome video! It makes perfect sense that tog would be looking for softer baits in the Spring. Could you give some info on when it would be a good time to use Speckled Crabs, Jonah Crabs, and Asian Shore Crabs? Any info on how to harvest the aforementioned baits would be great as well. My local bait & tackle shop says that they do not sell any tog baits except for sandfleas and green crabs because the other crabs tend to die too quickly.

    My suggestion for jonah crabs would be throw a pot where they are known to be caught ask around for them. And for asians just go to a local bay or lagoon at low tide. Flip over some big rocks they will be under them, just toss as many as you need for you trip into the bucket, and make sure to put the rock back to the way you found it, they will be back there the next time you flip the rock/boulder over.

    I disagree about tackle. I jig for tog with a medium spinning rod and a 2500 reel. I use 15lb braid and a 50lb leader...I've caught them up to 22" with this setup

    Why aren't these guys measuring the fish? Blackfish is 15" minimum. They are just catching them & putting in the bucket, no measuring?

      Maybe because;
      1. when we filmed this many years ago the size was 14 inches
      2. because we know what we are doing and have done it for so long we know what is a keeper and what isn't???
