American from the rural Ozarks here. This is one of the most beautiful, human moments I’ve ever witnessed. Thank you for giving us the honor of sharing in this moment with you.
Its a very emotional event when a Wahine receives her moko kauae. The support from all her friends and family there in person, and also those who have passed on just make it really physically and spiritually emotional for all. Nothing to be sad about, those are tears of joy, love and admiration.
So lucky to have so many whanau to share this experience with. The love in the room is so overwhelming that I can only hope to have when it comes time to do mine. So beautiful to have waiata and haka during your journey and in your Marae with your tupuna all around you. I felt their aroha for you.
This is absolutely beautiful. Affirming her identity and place amongst her people. This is the kind of event and practice that grounds a person, giving them strength and a sense of purpose
@@ЛюдмилаЕмельянова-и6пwell i don't know where or what nation you come from but women around the world from all different cultures used to have traditional tattoos in all different areas of their bodies. But you are correct - Maori are the only ones to have tattooed lips and chins today. The only other ones who had anything remotely close were the priestesses of Ancient Egypt. For Maori, it is called Moko and it is a genealogical and spiritual identity marking. Today it is mainly done by tattoo artists with tattoo ink supplies. Traditionally though the skin was carved out by bone chisels and filled with natural pigments from nature or the pigments were tapped into the skin using a tool made from sharks teeth like our kin in the Polynesian Islands. And they never perished from infection either. There was so much stigma attached to it that barely any Maori women adorned it. But Maori have a habit of changing peoples views by saying f#ck you - it's our faces, our bodies and just doing what we do to revive our cultural pride, customs and traditions til it becomes accepted practice. What europeans were trying to stamp out in order to turn us into them has failed. What is unique to Maori culture is also a huge part of New Zealand's tourism industry. Still got a whole bunch of pale, stale arseholes in NZ that like to stigmatize them ..... but they're dropping into the grave faster than their prejudices can rise again.
Witnessing the power of human connection, history, ancestry, love and community. So many of us have lost so much, bless this family for holding firm to what is their special connection to each other. We could all learn from this.
Wow this is something unique, special and emotional. My family lost the culture of such moments of family and group but I'm so glad that Maori culture still goes on with their's Lot of respect joy and admiration for you all please keep share cause it's wonderful I'm all tears
I am speechless!!... I don't even know what's going on, but the family support and love and care they provide for this is nothing but incredibly heart touching. Proof that the language of the heart goes beyond any language and cultural barriers.

Yes tears of joy. Just came across this in my youtube feed. I am an indigenous native, i live in ohio in the US. Theres a wonderful connection here. Ancestors to current family that its all in the blood, the spirit, the culture, which colonization and many hardships have not taken away. Wow this is so incredibly beautiful. If I’m not mistaken this looks like something that is very “coming of age”. A beautiful reminder that our chapters in life are sacred and worth honoring, cherishing, and celebrating.
