"the song is about someone who goes out into the desert until night" -- living in a desert on the other side of the world and not understanding a word of the lyrics, it absolutely makes sense. The constant droning heat, harsh dry air, and beat of lengthy transport across wide meandering stretches of arid land are captured in a sound that nearly paralells the beauty of the enviornment it's written about.
This group came into my radar a few years back and I absolutely love their stripped down spacious sound. It's hypnotic, haunting, and they can really jam. One can also hear the power in their lyrics and this is another fine example of how music is truly a universal language. I came across the show in Seattle too late to make it but hoping I can catch them live someday.
I feel my inner african when I hear this. Its like the original blues music man. My Moroccan teacher always bragged about how the root of american music is actually from the Gnawa and a lot of traditional Berber and Sahel music.
+Araphel Khafre tinariwen DO play their native music - but the inspiration comes from all over the world - i mean, the guy who founded the band was a touareg refugee for most of his childhood and being musical he gathered the cassetes which he could play at that time - among others some hendrix too - this is what came up thru them
Who are the 87 people that don't like this?! I'd like to put them all in a room and ask them to write a 1,000 word essay on why they dislike this music.
I agree usually the likes and dislikes make sense but this is a marvelous music performance as soon as I saw they only have three lights and 80 something dislikes I assumed it was because of what they're wearing and my instinct is usually spot on so many uneducated and ignorant people out there just missing out on all kinds of beautiful worldly things
So, some time ago, I caved and watched a vid of two kittens wrestling (I'm not a cat fan) and it was adorable. It had dislikes. And someone in the comments asked your same question. Someone replied to it saying, "It's so that the same video doesn't keep coming up in their "suggested" videos. I don't know if that works or not. UA-cam's algorithm fails there, it should cycle lots of other VERY similar vids before one you've already seen comes up again. By the way, dislikes are up to 379 today. (Yeah, I spelled out "BTW", guess my age, haha)
much gratitude and respect to you for posting the precious Tinariwen for all to see and hear--- recently saw Tinariwen live and look forward to the next time-i Love this band- Thank you Tinariwen
I saw these guys play in Brooklyn about 2 years ago and it was honestly amazing....the crowd was going nuts. I went by myself and had the best time ever.
Love this, thx for posting. Love the upside down bass, the drummer's lighter, eagle eye cherry looking dude, the grooves, just everything - much appreciation from the other side of the globe~
Formally established in 1982 at a festival in Algiers by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib Alhassan ag Touhami and fire Intayaden, Taghreft Tinariwen, which means tamasheq "nation building" has played an important role during the Tuareg rebellion 1990s, spreading messages of hope and resistance to their compatriots. Originally, the three friends are playing on an acoustic guitar they share, before meeting an orchestra of Tuareg musicians, voice of the Hoggar singing in Arabic and offer to Ibrahim his first electric guitar. In Tamanrasset, they give concerts accompanied by three women. enrique lopez The Growlers covered a Tinariwen song and they called it Drinking The Juice Blues. I read an interview where their singer Brooks said that he thought it was a song from some band long gone from the past so he just made up jibberish lyrics in english and they released it as their own. Later he figured out Tinariwen is a modern band and has been giving them shouts out since then.
For all the people not understanding why they love the music without understanding the lyrics, lyrics are subjective when you hear music without understanding the meaning that is beauty of singing it's only another instrument you don't need to understand you only need to feel it
Found these guys by way of time spent with Sahrawi in Western Sahara, a resilient people constantly facing the consequences of imperialism - no doubt connected to the origins of this group
A couple of the young guys are there! Nice! I love this "Protest" band and all they do for their Tuareg people, who are progressive and civilized. The older band members were conscripted into Khadafi's army! Power to Tinariwen! Their music speaks!
Being a Moroccan, a country that breathes Tichumaren, Folk, Gnawa and Fusion, seeing Tinariwen on KEXP is a very pleasing thing ! Awesome band.
Chakib Tsouli Best regards from Romania, music has no fronteers.
+Chakib Tsouli being moroccan has nothing to do with !

***** Art have never solved problem, but has given a voice to people who seems like they don't have one.
Gabriella Vallu i think its beautiful, art gives people voices and lets them be heard
I feel my inner african when I hear this. Its like the original blues music man. My Moroccan teacher always bragged about how the root of american music is actually from the Gnawa and a lot of traditional Berber and Sahel music.
+Araphel Khafre Listen to Kabarira from Rwanda!
+Araphel Khafre You do feel the african child trapped in you?

It goes to show that, music is universal.
These guys have such a great sound, loved it from the first note!
This is blues at its purest
Solid bass.
that bass player though!
Noah's Arc The bass was a gift from Flea of RHCP!!!
Alejandro Scaff yeah just the bass not the feeling
Alejandro Scaff I believe you meant the RCMP, right? The Royal Canadian Mounted Police? I think Flea is the name of one of their horses.
His name is Eyadou Ag Leche.
+Mutaz El-tayeb hahaaha you wish...
Found these guys by way of time spent with Sahrawi in Western Sahara, a resilient people constantly facing the consequences of imperialism - no doubt connected to the origins of this group
He is literally playing the bass upside down... low E is on the bottom and high E is on the top....

NORTH AFRICA IS AMAZIGH
ABDELKARIM AL KHATTABI IS OUR LEADER
I SALUTE MY AMAZIGH BROTHERS IN ALL NORTH AFRICA
FROM THE RIF , TAMAZIGHT FOR LIFE!
I saw them here in Brazil and I should say they are great live!
Beautiful line of bass on the first song. Great music.
Not only is the bassist playing a right-handed bass left-handed, but it looks like it's still strung right-handed as well. That's hard to do. Respect.
love your music brodas
reminds me of ali farka toure, i love the blues/world vibe
+anarchitect420 Hit the gong Roger, hit it.
+M. Goetz you know whats up!
+M. Goetz hey is that you mike? gersplooshhh
+anarchitect420 they are both from Mali, I am starting to think Mali is a powerhouse of world music
oh man, great reminder to pull those records out. haven't listened to him in a good while.
I just love this band. Tuaregs are great people. And musically gifted.
I know nothing about this genre, the band or even what the hell they're singing... but damn these guys are tight. That rhythm section is so good!
Wow. They put off an amazing vibe!
A couple of the young guys are there! Nice! I love this "Protest" band and all they do for their Tuareg people, who are progressive and civilized. The older band members were conscripted into Khadafi's army! Power to Tinariwen! Their music speaks!
these guys should do a show in Brazil. Here're missing authenticity
I don't understand the lyrics but I love their sound! Incredible, just incredible.
I cant stress how amazing this is. This is amazing. Amazing. Awesome
the bass line is just amazing
Dude's playing his bass upside down, how cool is that?
The Jimi Hendrix way
And killing it
One of them is left-handed! WTF!
So soothing and mystical, resonates in my heart and transports me.
Just like the desert, pure music.
You dont have to understand the language to feel the music in your soul. I love how they wear their normal garb's even in that hot studio !!!
Felipe Rodriguez
This is so cool! Love their outfits
These guys are amazing!
absolutely wonderful
It's good to see they're prepared for the likely event of a sandstorm in the studio...
blues belongs to noone and to everyone, Africa is the craddle of humanity but pentatonics scales come from all over the world....
The groove is all that, glad I listened.
I don't even know what the hell they're saying but I still absolutely love this!
