  • Interview with Ovie Sparks, Jim Hawkins, and Paul Hornsby as they talked about some of the history of Capricorn Studio to a reporter with the Atlanta Journal/Constitution done on November 6, 2019 (before the grand reopening of Capricorn Studios). The beginning of the video is in the middle of a story about Dickey Betts spilling a cocktail in the mixing board. Also discussed during this video: The Marshall Tucker Band, The Allman Brothers Band, Tom Dowd, Johnny Sandlin, Oscar Toney Jr., Swamp Dogg, Otis Redding, Rick Hall, Clarence Carter, Phil Walden and the 3 “M”s (Macon, Muscle Shoals, and Memphis). Unfortunately, the video ends abruptly because the camera phone lost power. Ovie Sparks engineered The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Kitty Wells, Wet Willie, The Charlie Daniels Band, etc. Jim Hawkins engineered The Allman Brothers Idlewild South album working with producer Tom Dowd, also engineered R.E.M., Govt. Mule, Drive-By Truckers, etc. Paul Hornsby produced The Marshall Tucker Band, Kitty Wells, Wet Willie, The Charlie Daniels Band, Clarence Carter, etc. #CapricornStudios #SouthernRockInsider

I had the pleasure and honor of working for Mr Sparks, who I consider a mentor and friend. I learned so much from him, and he did so many kind things for me.
I admire his character as must as his outstanding engineering talents.
    Love hearing these stories!

Great stories and insight into the birth of Capricorn Studios from some of the key "hands on" first generation players. Hadn't heard much from Jim before this but loved him sharing his perspectives of the dynamics of the personalities involved.

I worked for Terry Kane in 1971-72, when we rebuilt that room. Most exciting time in my life.
I remember the day we heard that Ike Turner bought the Flickinger board we were waiting for, right off the factory floor. We had to build that little home-brew console in the basement, using a lot of military surplus parts, while waiting for the replacement board.
