      I see you as a tough old root!
      We are blessed in many ways, it has been rough getting to this point, and it's still rough, but it's nice knowing you are where you are because of what you alone have done.
      The house has a ways to go before were comfortable openly showing the world.
      We do a few for our members, but even then Celia a makes us spend a day cleaning haha.
      It is possible to join for a single month and get access to all the previous videos.
      As always thank you for your kind words!

    Black walnuts grow like crazy in here in Virginia, they grow fast too. The squirrels plant them for us.

    • @SteepintheWoods

      They are common here as well, I gather the key is planting them close enough together that they grow straight.
      We will see, many things never make it off the drawing board..

    Congratulations and fantastic job 👍! You have a beautiful piece of property there
    A weeping willow would be a great addition for later on for crafts and such, just don't plant kudzu... (Unless you get those goats you spoke of.) 😆

    • @SteepintheWoods
      @SteepintheWoods  3 роки тому +1

      Celia makes her own charcoal pencils, we use wild grape, but willow would do better!
      Goats are on the list, but I have an eternity of land clearing to do first.
      Hopefully we can get ether chickens or rabbits soon, there easy, and need much less prep work.

      @@SteepintheWoods My wife and I make grapevine wreaths, vine curled walking sticks, and barn wood signs to sell for extra income..
      Maybe Celia could start showcasing her crafts on the channel also.?
      I know my wife loves to watch crafts and that kinda stuff.
      God speed and God bless.

    I love hearing of your thinking of the future in maybe planting black walnut trees. Every place we've lived we have planted for the future, knowing that we might not even be able to enjoy it. Right now we have two little olive trees, a couple of peach trees, and a bunch of plants, hoping that some day someone will really enjoy them.

      Me as well! If it's still doing good come spring I'll go back and ring a few trees to give them more light.
      That seemed a dramatic step to take off hand at this point.

    Ok, looked up the river cane and it is being revived by the Cherokee Nation. Now, I left a msg for them asking about the seed uses as they are also the largest users of wild rice which seems to be in close family ties to each other. Also, river cane is mostly used for making arrow shafts.

    Josh and Celia, just wanted you to know when Ivy is the only one "talking" the closed captions list her "words" as music and I heartily agree! Good job on those plants. I, also was expecting them to be 3-4 inches tall. Stay safe. Love and hugs.

    I loved the opening, it made me think of a Shirley Temple movie scene from "The Little Colonel". Black Walnut trees would be awesome if you can keep the nuts away from the critters. lol You can also make dyes from the walnut hulls. I think you can plant some pears, mulberry and sopadilla trees next to the stream for your homestead.

    • @SteepintheWoods
      @SteepintheWoods  3 роки тому +1

      We have many trees we hope to buy soon. Mulberry is on that list! Along with hickory, cherry etc.
      Trees aren't cheap but we're still hopeful!

    Have you thought about planting paulownia? It's a steep loving tree that has valuable wood. I'm not sure if walnut would do very well there on steep slopes...it would require a lot of clearing for sunlight. Of course all trees need light and do better in cleanings.
    In bow making...make sure you tiller along the grain on the backnof the bow or else the tension forces will rip 'er apart. You almost have to be perfect along the edge of the growth ring.
    Cain is a good choice. Tn nursery is the best! Have gotten many a thousands of bare root from them for some projects (not for myself) and they can produce it.

    • @SteepintheWoods
      @SteepintheWoods  3 роки тому

      You never cease to amaze..
      Yes you do need a solid growth ring on the back of the bow specifically late wood.
      Though I have been on a steep learning curve. Multiple books read haha
      I also don't think they would do well on a hill, which will limit us to the acre or so of flat land. It's still o. The drawing board, even at 6$ a tree, ita a lot of money when planted 12" apart!
      I have not looked into those, however since you brought up Osage orange I have discovered they not only grow here, but that they can be had on the cheap as bare root.
      An interesting prospect!

      Paulownia tomentosa is invasive but it was brought here to meet a market for the Japanese. It used to sell for as much as walnut but I dont know what the market is now. Its hard to propagate but you can buy them bare rooted as seedlings. The wood is soft and light weight.

    A plan for the future , just right , you have a lot to think about for now and for ivy in later life excellent forward thought . Looking forward to see how it all comes to fruition in a couple of years . You have a spring there , have you thought of utilising it for power or pumping . Waterwheel free power . . Just a thought . Could be done very easily for very low cost . . Keep up the excellent work and content . A joy to view .
