Wow you did an amazing Jon with all three. Now ideally want to try soft pastel. I love the bubble background, would definitely be fun to try and something I had nit thought of doing.
Keira, love your show! I would love to see how you cut out your tape masking around the shapes in your pages. I typically use masking fluid, but I am curious about your taping process. I love soft pastels…I have even used them to color full page images, mostly animals when I want a soft, sweet look. Colored pencils to deepen shades. Try it, it’s fun!
Excellent video! I loved the tips. One thing to point out, I learned from I believe peta Hewitt is that the pastels are easy to erase and also don’t stick to pencil so you can do the pastels at any point of your coloring!!
Amazing backgrounds, thanks for sharing. Will definitely give the under-the-sea one a go. When I do mine I have only been using one colour of blue and then doing some circles in white. So I will try combining more colours next time. I really like the effect you have achieved. My copy of Johanna Basford's new book 'Magical Worlds' has just been delivered tonight, so I will find a suitable picture to have a go. And...I think white dots definitely add that extra bit of something to a picture x
I was just worried about getting the fixative all over my camera lens 😅 But basically what I do is spray around 20cm away from the page in a horizontal direction and then in a vertical direction straight after! 🥰💕
Loved the Galaxy background and also the bubbles 🫧 I must say i really loved this format when we can see you doing things live when you explain everything like that.
Love your videos and how you explain everything you are doing, my favorite is the night sky but all three are great! I'm currently coloring my first page in Shooting Star by Maria Trolle and am going to try a night galaxy sky using your method. I am new to coloring and mostly use alcohol markers and pencil but I did get a smaller set of soft pastels and after watching this video I am inspired to finally try. 😊
thank you for this video. I do like the fact that you have the voice over parts and other parts in real time...its more dynamic. :) Keep doing this great content
Wow, all of these are so inspiring ... and so many more supplies to put on my colouring wishlist! Love how you teach all of these techniques so they are approachable
Thank you for this great video. I bought some pastels months ago and have been too scared to use them! Definitely going to give them a try after watching this video.
Thank you so much for this video! It really helped me understand how to use soft pastels - one of my favorite mediums for backgrounds - with more confidence. In particular, I loved your comment about how discovering a new medium or technique has the power to re-ignite our passion for coloring. It just transports us back to the first time using color, amazed how something so small in our hand can produce such a fun effect! As for my vote, I loved all three, but the bokeh one was my favorite - so precious!!!! ❤
Love your videos! I want to try all three backgrounds because I like them all. It would be interesting to see you work with distressed ink and stencils in some backgrounds.
Hi. Love what you are teaching and creating so far. Have you considered a tutorial using black pencil? Sounds scary I know but it's use not only creates depth to shadow but helps colours pop from the page and appear more vibrant. Also grey for muting and softening tone and maybe a session on tint. Where colour is lightened with white or soft pastels to realistic highlights. Many colourists also have an interest in the use of embellishments such as metallics, glitter pens and Stickles or Pearl Drops. That may make a fun. If slightly messy, colouring session. Keep up the good work.
Ohh that's definitely a unique video idea! I'll have to experiment a little bit more with my blacks and greys to see how I would go about it! I am also partial to a lot of sparkle and shine on my pages 🤩Thank you for the idea x
Love the format of this video, it’s nice to hear some of your real time thoughts and a voiceover where you explain further like you did in this one 😄 I’ve been using soft pastels too lately for backgrounds, so there was some nice ideas and tips in this video I have to try. Loved all the backgrounds you made 😊🩷
Love this video got me wanting to get the pastel out. Your pages look so beautiful.be using ink pad for background. I would love to see how you would use them on same pages.
@@apicturedpurpose definitely do! It looks so neat! Barbara Colours demos it if you want a reference before trying. It makes the watercolor paint(dry) look so smooth . Keep being freaking amazing!!💜
These were all great Kira, I’ve hated pastels since forever but gave in and got a set a few weeks ago to try on a background, and I’m converted. I still don’t like the possible mess, but they make backgrounds so much easier and quicker, I’m going to give these back grounds a go, I do love a galaxy background 😊 I like either format of video, but I think hearing you talk through what you’re doing and what you’re thinking is really helpful for us to see your process. I can’t believe you’ve been colouring for a short amount of time you’re so so good! ❤
I definitely steered clear of pastels for a while because of the mess too. But they do make backgrounds so much quicker and faster. I find that it’s easiest to do a whole bunch of pastel backgrounds at once so I don’t have to keep getting things out and messy repeatedly ☺️💖
Daiso and Kmart have washi tape @ great prices - maybe kinder to colouring pages? And while there look at their 'rulers' - I bought one that has diff sized circle/square/triangle cutouts (aka stencils?). I find those create circles more easily and more circle-ly.
Great video Kyra! Loved all of them but especially the third one. It’s very helpful for me personally. I would LOVE you to show us how to use Neo II’s. I have them but have been too nervous to try them. You explain how to do these backgrounds so well it gives me the confidence to try it! Thank you so much!!! ❤
I have been learning them this week, got myself 3 open stock. I would really love to create backgrounds with them but I'm fussy so wouldn't want the 'unblended' colour to show after adding water, and I think working it enough to remove the drawing lines in a Johanna Basford book might damage the paper too much. They do work really well adding a dot of water with a paintbrush and painting from the tip though (also works well for Albrecht-Durer watercolour pencils), so far that is the method I like the best and it allows them to be used for detail work where the crayon is too chunky and gets the most pigment on the paper, I would be keen to learn more techniques though.
Hehe, this made me giggle as I was working with them today. I got a cheap set of the sorts of makeup brushes on eBay that people find helpful for blending. Used coarse sandpaper as a palette, it worked well to turn the pastel sticks to powder and pick it up directly from the sandpaper with my brushes 🙂
The reason why you have colours that are similar is because most budget brands don’t offer open stock and if you run our of a commonly used colour you don’t need to buy a new set to replace one colour. Hope this helps and also love your channel ❤
Thank you for this video, love all your videos and have learned so much, liked all backgrounds but really loved the bubbles, can’t wait to try. Would also like to see how to use oil pastels, have tried without success, they seem really tricky to use.
Thank you for this great video!! ❤. I did enjoy 3 of them 😊 By the way, based on the #3 background you created, what color would you recommend for the key and the ribbon ? Thank you !
I actually completed the page! The finished product is on my Instagram if you want to check it out. I ended up with a gold and purple/pink color palette for the key ☺️🔑
I love all 3 of these backgrounds but I think the last one with the bubbles is my favorite! I don't really have any tips because I use the same methods for my soft chalk pastels as you showed in this video! Do you like using the oil pastels too? I haven't tried them on my coloring pages before because I'm not sure if I can use the same fixative spray that I use for my soft chalk pastels. I'd love to see a video about oil pastel backgrounds if you use them! I enjoyed watching this video, thanks for sharing! 😊❤️
@@apicturedpurpose Thanks! I look forward to seeing your oil pastels video! But I don't want you to feel rushed, just whenever you have time 😉 I've noticed a lot of people using the oil pastels lately too. I have Faber Castell gelatos and also the KingArt gel sticks but oil pastels are not the same, although I do think they can be used in similar ways.
@@silvers_ink No worries at all! I'll need to play around with my oil pastels a little bit more before doing a video. But I'll definitely create a video sometime in the near future. Have fun with your gelatos and gel sticks!

I had no idea! Thank you so much for the tip. That’ll definitely come in handy 🤩💖
@ you are SO welcome!! 🤗
You are so talented! Your kindergarten teacher spotted your genius!
Naww haha! Thank you 🤩💖
Also I spray workable fixative on the page before using the pastel it sticks a lot better to the page and less crumbs 😅

Oh Kyra! Você sempre se supera! Esse vídeo será adicionado à minha playlist de fundos. Obrigada ❤
Awww I’m so glad it was helpful for you! 💖✨
Loving this format of video. Great tips and beautiful outcome. Next time, maybe you can once show how you use the fixative to seal the color.
I was just worried about getting the fixative all over my camera lens 😅 But basically what I do is spray around 20cm away from the page in a horizontal direction and then in a vertical direction straight after! 🥰💕
@@apicturedpurpose Well I can also understand that, haha! Thank you for the explanation. I should be able to work it out now.

If your tape is not coming off easily, you can use a hair dryer or heat to release the adhesive and the tape will come right up.
