  • Kathryn Furby is working to communicate science in ways that are more than pretty pictures and far from stuffy documentaries. Furby focuses on putting the human narrative back into our stories about science. She is working to harness the power of storytelling to show how anyone can become a scientist.
Currently a Ph.D. student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), Furby travels to some of the most remote places on earth to examine the impacts of climate change on coral reefs. She has taught science communication courses for different age groups in the US and Saudi Arabia.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Yup, my parents didn't know anything about science. When I graduated and told them, well i'm a scientist now... They looked at my awkwardly. They had the same stereotype.

It would be even more convincing if a video posted by tech-savvy TEDx, about communicating science, was posted with correct aspect ratio.

Great talk! I'm convinced scientists MUST come forward and disseminate their work in a way more young people become attracted to science. Back in the 50s and 60s the best students used to go into science. Now they choose other careers.

I was told by a Professor when I was doing microbiology undergrad that to be good scientist I should be able to communicate effectively. I should do a science an a arts degree. Then I will be able convey my scientific finding to the broader masses. This still sick to me when I try to explain my research. Sorry for the bad English ! It's one of the six I converse in.

i thought the textbooks and worksheets weren't that bad in highschool, maybe kids are just getting dumber? but redardless of that, i think getting science out to kids like this is great :D

If you want to engage youth you have to adopt the mythbuster motto,(Jamie want big boom!)! If you and your scientist mother had common sense you would put on proper clothing for stargazing! If you want to get converts to science talk money!
