Busking is at Risk

  • That doesn't paint a nice picture, but I have hope. If you look at the kinds of activities that once filled our public spaces-kids playing hoop, street sellers, pedlars, town criers and the like-only busking remains. There will always be a demand for entertainment, and there will never be an issue with supply (especially if the doomsayers are correct, and AI starts taking over in the arts).
Also, buskers are a resourceful bunch. They're probably here to stay.

    Great video!!!
As a fellow busker based in Brisbane, Queensland Australia. It's sadly the same here too with the city is not open to all the positive affects of the artistic community playing and performing live in all parts of the city. All wrapped up in noise complaints, police, local Gov auditions and payment, application and insurance boundaries. When I first started playing outside my local town nightclub it's actually stopped people fighting each other after the nightclub closed and helping the local people with moving people.
So much good can come from bringing this kind of entertainment back into the worlds city's and towns...

Very insightful as always. Your work fighting Bournemouth Poole and Christchurch Council was phenomenal Nick, and you saved us all from some of the oppression. It was the worst I've known in all the UK, and I've busked in all the major cities. I prefer smaller towns these days, much much much less bureaucracy. There is hope. Cash isn't dead yet.

THANK YOU for this video. I’ve been busking in NYC, and the city Mayor’s Office literally used my picture for their bus-stop Ad project and shutdown my performances multiple times, in the same season. I truly appreciate this video raising awareness about us.🙏

What do you mean they used your picture? As in, they were celebrating street performance with your picture, but in the meantime the cops were shutting you down?

Busked all around the world.. this is what we have to deal with.. which is unbelievably sad- if people didn't like what we do they wouldn't pay us- big power hungry corporations and their minions are just obstacles that we encounter and fight through to make our living all the more worthwhile... they can try to make us conform but will never break our spirit

Thanks for the video as a busker in Sydney the thing that has really destroyed us is no one carrying cash any more. All the other issues are not relevant and only complicate the issue to those we seek to inform Buskers have always had to deal with councils and other authorities. Please just stick to that big issue otherwise it becomes diluted with other side issues and just makes us look like complainers.Sydney used to be a wonderful haven for buskers ,now it is impossible for most artists to make a reasonable income.

Hi Andre, unfortunately I think they're all an issue, and connected. I don't think that properly recognising all the issues street performers are facing would make buskers look like they're just complaining, a bit like how I don't think that pointing out all the issues facing any other minority or overlooked group does that. It's an entire ecosystem problem. Imagine what technical solutions might be out there for street performers, if only people saw them as worthy of attention and support.

The local municipality I live in (Mornington Peninsula Council, Victoria, Australia) regulations require you to apply to the local chamber of commerce for a letter of permission, that letter, a council application and AU$239 is sent to council, who may give you a 3 month permit, depending on busking numbers you may get 2 more 3 month extensions.. It’s designed I think purely discourage busking. 😢
