I think its more of a reference to how P.C Port used the users real name. We all know Keith isn't BF's real name, yeah, but in P.C Port, Tails is renamed to Alan during the Hide and Seek part. Dunno.

Alan in PC port isn't the one who playing the game, but rather a soul of the one that already played this game and enterred the world of X. Alan is basically the one we controls, a soul in the tails's body. But since Boyfriend isn't the vessel, we can assume, that "Keith" is basically the current player of this game. It can explain some moments, like, why would BoyFriend jump into the fire and etc, but at some moments, he takes away control to himself due to his more independency from player (like Alan once did in actual Sonic PC Port, even breaking fourth wall by saying to us "I DON'T NEED YOU TO CONTROL ME").
