@@jhome886 I found another video about Carol and Julie Andrews doing this same type of skit in 1962 with Roy Castle. Maybe that comment has to do with that video? This video has a longer song though.
What, ruining the tradition of acting being rough and ready? Or the centuries of women who go on stage being seen as disrespectable? Sounds like you're familiar with that attitude, actually.
This is something I've never seen in Maggie Smith--she's laughing and having a rip--roaring good time! I've seen some of her movies, as well as clips from others, and in those, she was never called upon to be so free and easy! It's just great to see! Perhaps this was because of Carol and the joy she radiated from her core!
"Tain't only the 'urdlin' 'n the 'oppin' over the 'igh edges what 'urts the 'orses 'ooves... It's the 'ammer 'ammer 'ammer on the 'ard iron road!" These two ladies are great!
Hate to say it, but when back in '75 when saw the show couldn't figure out what they were saying and wondered. Fast forward to 2022 still couldn't figure it out. Till now. Now that I see it written down and read it, I say "Ohhh, so that's what they were talking about! Now it makes sense!😂🤣 Thank You! And to think that Julie Andrews wrote in her book that they actually toned down the accent for the US and had to use a thicker in in the UK😲😯.Gee if I couldn't understand the very toned down one how would I understand the original accent in the UK?😲😯
She had done so much in her life so many of the young people don't know all her work take a look Maggie Smith was in many wonderful tv appearances and films 😢you like so so many have moved on to the greatest Stage of them all. Bless your gingerbread heart Dame Maggie Smith you will be remembered forever 🎃
A true gem I never knew existed until last week. I wish they'd done this on a Royal Variety show in London and shown on TV, it would have been a showstopper. Maggie did a few of these duets with Carol, but this is the best one for me.
I keep watching this! As a child of the 80s, Dame Maggie has always been ' old' to me. She was old in sister Act and more so in Downton Abbey and it's totally wonderful to discover her in her younger says. These ladies are, what in thier 30s? Such a brilliant act, fab singing and very funny!! She kept her tongue- in -cheek witty comments into Downton Abbey too. They don't make fantastic shows like this, now. We have talk shows , but this one is rehursed, and brilliantly funny. Both ladies are a class act. It's one of my favourite 'go-to' UA-cam videos!
Thanks for posting. I grew up in the 70s watching and loving Carol's show. So many great memories. Two class acts here. ah for the days when a network show had a full orchestra on hand for the music segments.
I keep watching this thinking "oh I'll get bored of this soon" 100 views later...nope still amazing! Love these two women, such role models for young girls like me rather than some of the women today!
Yeah, well that's what many would consider the "posh" accent, as many would generalise it. The enunciation and speech is very proper and clear. While Liverpudlian (Beatles) is Scouse, up north. "Cockney" is more derived from economic means. It was about being in Cheapside, the borough off the poorer side of London, and has connotations with working-class London.
Yes, this is a terrific duet with one of the great natural charmers of British entertainment. I have to confess my bias, however, for her irresistibly adorable partner. Carol, you are the woman who must have been my true love in a former life. You are simply ravishing in every way.
I love this video!! My best friend and I have learned every part to this act and let me tell you it is quite funny to see us parading down the halls at school reciting random lines... ;)

Actresses like Maggie make being an actor a respectable and dignified profession.
You mean... She never posed naked??

Yep. Respectable and dignified. That's Maggie Smith and Carol Burnett doing "Take the A Train" in Cockney. Heh. 'Ave a noice dai, Guv.

They are both so sparkly. And RIP Maggie Smith.
Absolutely love these two together 🥹 RIP Maggie, and thanks for everything
Such classy performers - so sad that we never see anything close to this nowadays.
Aren't these ladies both still alive?
@@BuzziRus Thankfully they most certainly are!
@@michaelburling I see what you mean, we don't have such quality shows these days. This is the quality performance of a bygone era....
The proper golden years of entertainment.
Well, after all, we do have Marjorie Toilet Queen and Lauren Boob-alert.

At the beginning it was like hearing the Dowager Countess, only 40 years younger, sassily putting down anything and everything American. 😀😁😅😂🤣
Lovely. Can't stop watching.

Maggie Smith is awesome...AWESOME!!!
I love their outfits. So nice to see pretty on stage.
I remember learning a cockney accent to learn "wouldn't it be loverly" one of the most fun accents to sing!
I remember seeing Maggie Smith as Mrs. Matlock in the Secret Garden when I was a little girl. Which was my first ever Maggie Smith movie.

God love her. And now she's gone. What a treasure.
