    Known by his family, comrades and friends as Paddy, he was married with four sons. He joined Oglaigh na hEireann, Defence forces Ireland, in December 1968. He served in four overseas United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping missions, three in Lebanon and one in Cyprus.
    He was part of a combined Army/Garda search and rescue for kidnapped Quinnsworth Executive Mr. Don Tidey, a citizen unjustly held captive. During the rescue, Paddy and recruit Garda Gary Sheehan were murdered in cold blood without warning, Paddy was 36 years old.
    Private Patrick kelly was the first Irish Soldier to be killed in active service in Ireland since the civil war. No one has been convicted of the double Murder of the two members of the Irish security forces to this day.
    Paddy was known to be extremely diligent to carrying out his duties in transport Company, 6 Infantry Bn, Custume Barracks, Athlone. He was a quiet, unsown nature, and had a good humored smile for all. he was a great family man whose interests included repairing cars, rearing turf in the summer months, going to country and western dances, and was a fan of Elvis Presley.
    On the 16 July 2012, in recognition of his supreme sacrifice. Private Kelly was Posthumously awarded the Military Star, a prestigious Bravery Medal by the Minister for justice.
