@18:20 noting the AA batteries in the compartment, I just learned that Hasselblad would offer the service to modify these 500 ELM cameras from NiCd rechargeable to AA batteries, to make them like a 553 ELX.
one thing there IS an off switch, on the right hand side the small sector with a T, A & O this is the power for the motor drive, The shutter is still in the lens, and Mechanical; unlike the Bronica S/S2 which is Focal plane shutter, but electric drive the same as this 500EL; the Bronica SQ, SQa, ETR and the GS are Leaf shuttered cameras, ( all the formats, 6x4.5/6x6/6x7)- with these there is an 'off switch' of a kind, when you put these bronica lenses into the T mode, No power is consumed to hold the shutter open, for long exposures, also I beleive that the shutter lock, when turned to orange dot is kind of the 'official' off switch.
Hey thanks for looking out! That lens with the exception of a minuscule piece of dust here or there is beautiful. It was filthy on the outside but a good cleaning really brought it back. I love that show, but dealers (in general not just at the PHSNE) put down every other dealers stuff. The more you spend at one guys spot the less you have to spend at his. I showed it to a repairman friend of mine who said it was an extremely clean copy. He did recommend a T* for better contrast. TFW!
I hope that you don't mind me asking you this question, but how long does a set of AA Batteries last? I ask this as I am about to buy a 500 El from a dealer here in the UK.
I love the modular design. I was looking at modern hasselblads, and it looks like they kept that philosophy through the years. Although I'm curious as to what the digital backs would be hot swappable for? (screens, memory cards...?) I've also noticed some SLRs also have that focus screen swap utility. On the older cameras where AF didn't exist for their lens lineup, what were the differences in the various screens?
I have a 500 c/m with the T* 80. When I looked at this EL at Photographica, I thought it was a nice buy. Another dealer told me that he looked at the glass on the 80, and saw some haze. I hope the seller pointed that out to you. -Arthur
CathodeRayTube99 Correction, the PP3 adaptor works very well. I just tried it and the cameras (I use two for 3D) cycle much quicker. I'll use PP3s for the next pair of film.
I don't have an EL or ELm but I do find myself wanting a winder when shooting baby and pet shots, as I can't wind fast enough to get that shot I want (that always comes a second after the shot I took) Most el, el/m won't have that very expensive factory aa modification. ( Much later models such as 553 elx, 555eld have the aa holder already built in. If you have a factory el, elm, that takes the big round rechargeable batteries, it will run it's motor faster (about 1.5x faster) if you use 9 volt battery adapters and put in two at once. It isn't nikon f5 fast, but it's a more healthy sounding higher pitched wind and happens faster... Aside from 9 volt adapters, there are 6v adapters and the $100 a piece factory style batteries. About the EL having a replaceable screen, they did have that in the last year or so of production, (same with 500c). when they ran out of 500c and 500el nameplates, they started using the new nameplates and they were called /m. You are lucky to have an EL from the last year because the screen is a great thing to change. I use acute matte D with microprism and split image. I dont have an EL or ELm but I do find myself wanting a winder when shooting baby and pet shots, as I can't wind fast enough to get that shot I want (that always comes a second after the shot I took) Cheers.
hahaha. I love your justification talk. I just bought a 500 c/m days ago and I really needed to see this video. Now I feel much less guilty. Thx for your video.
Hello happy new year to everyone so i just got a hassleblad and im very happy to have this in my collection such a great build of a camera but im looking to upgrade the focusing screen to a brighter one can someone point me in the direction where i can buy one please and thank you
I had 1 too,And your camera needs some grease inside.Take the right plades off and put some grease or oil on the gearwheels.Right now it screems to much.
Sounds good! Unfortunately, I got promoted twice in the last three months at work and things are a little crazy! I haven't been able to do any videos for a few months now...sorry. However, I would love to put together some kind of photo walk. Your thoughts?
great video, I have an e l-m model but with the left handed pistol grip, they are great cameras; BUT BEWARE the auto fire modes, took me ages to stop it , could be a loose connection, etc inside my body; but just might be a thing with all of them . (p.s.:you forgot to mention the Polaroid type of film backs, they are special to this model { size due to motor_drive obstructing the back plane of the camera} however some also fit the other 'v' series models as well.)
+Jun Chen The camera has to be cocked (mirror down) in order for the lens to come off. If the there is no battery and the mirror is up, then the only way you can get the lens off is to advance the mechanism manually; that requires two people! I can tell you how to do this if you want. If you plan to use the camera then you'll have to get a battery for it anyway. That's the easiest way. Regards, Jack
+Jun Chen The easiest way is to run the Hasselbald's motor, that way there's no risk of damaging the camera. You can do this with a PP3 battery. (9 volt) Have you got a good PP3 battery lying around? Just hold the NEGATIVE of the PP3 on the fuse in the battery compartment and the POSITIVE to the contact at the back of the battery compartment. Then, if the camera is working it will cycle and you can get the lens off. The best way is if I make a little video; I'll try and do that this weekend. Jack
I think I have the G.A.S. too o_O A much moderate type of it, but only because I don't have that much money to sepnd on gear. You think there is a cure???
This video has me thinking about a Hasselblad 500cm for Christmas instead of a Mamiya 645 Pro.... G.A.S. I do not deserve a Hasselblad but meh life is short, get what you want!
True! However, I have both...the EL/M and a Mamiya Pro TL. I have to say, while I do LOVE the Hassy, I have been using the Pro TL more...It is just a lot lighter... Accessories/lenses and stuff are MUCH cheaper for the Mamiya. With all that being said, if you really want a Hasselblad and are on a "budget", you can't go wrong with an EL/M.
The G.A.S. Station It really is a hard decision to make. I really like both cameras. I do like how you said that G.A.S. is really about finding the camera that excites you and makes you want to shoot
as a Mamiya RB67 user the "...this camera is pretty heavy..." made me laugh out loud ;P

Pentax 6x7 with prism, lens, grip, quick plate is a healthy rig.
But I work out so I'm cool hahaha

The CR-P2 adaptor is best for ELs or EL/Ms that take the old NiCad pack. You can fit one or two of them, and camera shops usually hold CR-P2s.
CathodeRayTube99 There's a PP3 adaptor too, but the lower output Z of the CR-P2 makes the camera sound better!

Great camera! I will say that the ultimate satisfaction for me is winding my 501.
How could someone not like this? It's a Hasselblad.
You live in MA? Let's get together and do some film shooting. I'm in southern NH. Half hour from Boston. I got me a Hassy too.

Hahaha! You are asking the wrong guy!
@5:00 review starts more or less, after the child-like joy of shooting the new camera
bwvids thus the title... Thanks for the helpful feedback
That's a "curtain" in the back. Shutter is in the lens.
It is an auxillary SHUTTER with a synchro for microscope etc.
Heavy ?...try a Mamiya RB or RZ !!...shot weddings with those...AAAARRRGGGHHH !!
