  • A big thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video and helping make these adventures possible aboard Penelope. If you’d like to open your own online shop or create a website go to Squarespace.com/wildweroam for 10% of your first purchase.
Have you ever anchored your boat overnight? Were you nervous that you'd swing into another yacht nearby or drag anchor and hit the shore? Did you hold an anchor watch or rely on the anchor alarm?
When we set out to anchor overnight for the first time we had a lot of these same questions. We decided to go somewhere we had sailed before to make it a little easier for us and it turned out to be a night we'll always remember. Living aboard Penelope is an adventure of a lifetime and I know we are going to make so many more memories sailing her around the world, but for now, while we're still beginners, the big memories are just a quick sail away from our mooring.
    Big hugs,
    Dana

Your comments brighten our day so much! Wow, the support in this community is just incredible :) Thank you for being here through our huge learning adventure that is boat life. Doing our first overnight anchor was something that Lou and I had been talking about for months, and it was such an accomplishment for us. Next week we'll finally be sharing our winter plans so stay tuned if you're interested!!
    big hugs,

I'm 74 years old and have been sailing since I was 11. I've made my living sailing and have lived on a boat for many years. Watching you guys discovering all the wonders sailing has to offer brings back so many beautiful memories. I thank you so much for that. I'm following several of the sailing channels while recovering from cancer. It keeps me occupied until I can get back out there and continue cruising. I live in Florida but if all goes well I'll be cruising New England waters again this coming summer. Keep doing what you're doing. You're going about it the right way and I know you'll succeeded. Thanks for the memories. I'll be watching. Cap'm Woody

Good job guys. Just be sure to include "freeboard" in your scope. Probably 4 or 5 feet on your boat, from the water to the bow. So for 5 to 1 scope, in 13 feet of water, you are looking at 90 feet of chain or so.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  3 роки тому

      thanks for the tip!!!

    • @valbaker2463
      @valbaker2463 3 роки тому +1

You can likely use less scope with all chain but it’s dependent on the holding ground and the type and weight of your boat. It can be a way to limit your swing. That said chain does you no good in the locker. Take bearings once you have set your anchor. Then you can have a look every hour or so or when the wind picks up. Congratulations on anchoring overnight!!

Respect you guys wearing your life jackets. With practice it’s easy to get used to and function. For a couple it’s the only sensible approach in almost all conditions on water. Even marina staff in Europe keep a jacket on when on the dock.

First time I experienced that, we ended up stranded in a local fishing harbor. Up against local fishing boats, with our keel/propeller and rudder entangled in their anchor lines. The wind had changed during the night and we had no night watch....thank GOD it was a Sunday morning that day and no fishermen went out.
We manage, with a lot of help from some locals, to free ourselves and shamefully sneak out of the harbor, and today it's just a somewhat funny memory :)

Dana, please, please, please, give an sailing lingo tutorial, for us non sailor peeps. I love watching both of you learn from week to week, but I’m so lost as to what it is your doing/learning as I try to understand all of the sailing terms, like what is aTac, helm or Mooring? Also a updated tour of ur beautiful Penelope would be so cool, which end of the boat do u sleep on now that your bro 😎 is gone! Absolutely love watching your adventures sending lots of love your way from MN!

    • @Mamame4

Tack: Changing the position of the boat relative to the wind. So if the wind is coming over one side of the boat, you turn (into the wind) and then position to have the wind come from the other side.
Helm: The place where you steer the boat
Mooring: a more permanent anchor that is set in a harbor. It has the anchor part (which often looks like an upside down mushroom made of metal or else it can be a cement block or something else heavy), a chain up to the surface and some sort of float to keep it accessible to the boater.

I have been doing this all my 61yrs initially on my parents boat then on other peoples boats then my own with my own family, its second nature now but I remember my own first time on my boat a long time ago when my children were infants. Initially I set an alarm for a check every 2 hours after the first season I didn't need the alarm because I just woke up every 2 hours then after a season of that I only woke up for wind changes or changes in the boats motion. I only remember a few nights (maybe 3) where I awoke to a bad situation and one 48hr period where we sat at anchor through a cyclone and I didn't sleep the whole time (Peaked at 90Knots of wind) fun with 3 kids from 3yrs to 8yrs old. That's survival anchoring at its most exhilarating. But rarely is it an issue if you prepare well and understand the principles of good anchoring .

You guys are doing well and it is great to share your experience. Baby steps, learning your way and your boat will come with time. Experience follows and will come with time. Mistakes will be inevitable. But it goes with the liquid turf you ride! Time gives you great insight and wisdom that never happens overnight! It takes years, but remember, you have time. Fair winds and following seas. Keep sharing you adventures!

    Love spending time at anchor.
Relax, you have anchor alarms these days - but we find that we are suddenly wide awake as soon as the motion of the boat changes...
When you are in areas with a tidal stream try and be awake when the tide changes - the boat will swing around to the new stream direction and the anchor will reset (hopefully). Otherwise it's a bit discombobulating to wake up in the morning to find that all the boats in the anchorage have swung 180 degrees in the night.
Scope is important but you need to be using the same scope as your neighbours so ask:-) If you don't think they have enough out go somewhere else!
Also try to anchor with boats of the the same underwater profile, they will all point in the same direction.

Great video guys. First of anything is a big deal with you are learning to sail. Anchoring is such an important part of what you are learning. The biggest challenge is learning to trust your abilities. We have anchored for over 20 years and will still leave an anchor alarm on when we go to bed. Such an easy thing to do. After a while it will be come such an easy part of your daily routine. If you travel south you will have a lot of challenges with anchoring with tides and currents to deal with in the ICW. It looks to me like you are pretty much ready to take this challenge on. No better way than to jump in with both feet. You can do it. Take it from us, you will reach a point where you will ask what all the fuss was about. Bon Voyage.

Hey guys, I love your videos, here are some reasons why:
    - You two are awesome together and have such a positive vibe. I especially like that you say “I’m proud of us” this is something that I have carried into my life. It’s important to pause and recognize an accomplishment . Life can be hard so acknowledging the wins are important regardless of the magnitude.
    - The projects you have completed are many of the same ones we are thinking of. Also great teamwork. That hydrovane install looked really tricky
    - We sail in similar waters and on similar size/vintage boat. We just bought our boat this year so its great to see someone else working out some of the kinks of new sailboat ownership
    - Glad to also see someone else wearing their PDFs, so many people don’t. Especially as sailors a MOB situation is scary and not having a PFD on makes it life threatening very quickly. Good on you for wearing them so frequently
-Lastly your videos are really well shot and edited. Like really really good. That drone shot coming out of Cuttyhunk, beautiful. It’s a bit of a farther sail for us but its now on the short list of places to visit
One question: I see you have an iPad for navigation which will also be our plan for next season (we also have a chart plotter). What mount do you use and would you recommend it?
Thank you, keep being awesome and making great content!

You mention Penelope doesn’t sail well upwind. I’ve sailed a Rasmus 35 exactly like yours (except ketch rig) for over 30 years and found it can sail 30 degrees off wind very well. The sloop rig should do as well or better. Looking at the video, it may be that you could sheet in the main more, and the foresail quite a bit more. Try winching the Genoa in until it is about a foot off the spreader. You may have to slide your Genoa track block aft a bit.

Another GREAT video. I think everyone watching this was right there with you! Looked a little close to the boat behind on the mooring ball but otherwise no problems. Next hurdle is to be able to leave your boat at anchor and go exploring... there are WiFi and internet alarm systems you can install on the boat to enable swinging to be monitored... very useful. Lots of other considerations for another day, but you're doing wonderfully. Now, how many times have I been up all night worrying about a dragging anchor!

Using a good anchor alarm helps so much. We've never stayed up at night on anchor but we do wake up periodically during the night and just check the app on the phone to be sure we are good. Only once did we ever drag but that was in a HUGE storm at Block where someone dragged over our rode and knocked us loose. But we were awake before that happened because storms on the boat are LOUD! :). But good job on spending the night on anchor and I have to say I don't think I've ever seen Cutty so empty! LOL. But just remember that you measure the depth by the high tide depth and not low tide and don't forget to add the few feet to the bow roller. We have a trawler and add 10 feet to the depth of the water to calculate rode length! That could make a huge difference!

I have a device that watches distance moved, SOG, depth, windspeed, heading & air pressure change. They are all compared against preset limits & sound an alarm if anything goes out of range.

Great video! Little steps is always the best way to learn.
Remember to remove your winch handle once you set your sails. You would hate to lose it.

Reef your sails in thant kind off wind and you get a mutch better angle towards the wind, and more comfortable sailing!

Another amazing video ! Holy shit you guys are actually doing it. We got the same feeling of just pure happiness and excitement when we finally got on the road after months of planning and building our van. You guys freakin did it. You bought a boat, learned to sail, and now you've completed the final piece of your puzzle. So proud of you guys & how far you've come.

Dana when lighting your stove, why don’t you use a BBQ lighter instead of your cigarette lighter, this way you don’t burn your fingers and it would be a lot easier 🇨🇦😎🇨🇦

You always remember your first night at anchor. Mine was off Ann Marie Island Preserve just outside of Tampa Bay as I was sailing our house down to Ft. Myers Beach. I'm happy you picked as amazing a spot as I did cause you'll never forget it... (so best make it not outside a trashy harbor or someplace else sucky lol) Congrats you two!

You guys are so cute! Also doing the best thing to learn how to sail... But... you will still learn in 10 years, 20, 30... Nature will always surprise you! Experiences will be beautiful, will be scary, will be challenging... but wonderful!

My one recommendation for you guys is to get the fold down handles less chance of you losing them overboard. I've anchored out a number of times and on occasion found myself drifting far to close to the rocks(super strong tide) ended up using several anchors and tying off to a tree.

Helpful tip... Always bring a dinghy and motor, especially if no life raft on board. Nobody wants to bob out at sea in life vests, especially if no time to make a mayday call.

You might want to use a lab burner sparker to light your stove, instead of a butane lighter. Lab sparkers last a long, long time -- effectively forever.
