    I have been driving softop jeeps for 26 years in Maine winters, some of the hardtop jeeps have been colder , kind of like riding in a cooler , I think the heaters have come a long way since my 1997 TJ and that one wasn’t so bad, my 2021 JLR has a factory softop and is too warm some days. I think it’s all a matter of preference, and I prefer a softop, great video,thanks

      Great input from a fellow soft top guy in the NW! Thanks!
      I do love the versatility of our soft top in the warmer months and I don't think the cold weather tradeoff is enough for me to want to grab a hard top for the "offseason". That being said, I WOULD like to have a hard top for long road trips, as the wind noise can be taxing.

      AND, the HVAC in Gladiators is pretty amazing. Very simple vents but you can aim them anywhere or shut em down totally and it will blow you outa there on full power coming from Ram Trucks. I actually think Ram could go to school and Jeep in a few things and vice a versa. @@LookitThisReview

      The headliner kit for the hard tops has made the difference in hot and cold weather. They even make them for the older hard top jeeps also. At -40 in Idaho a hard top JKUR still needs a blanket in the back for passengers.

      Montana here in total agreement. So, we hit -38 here less than a week ago you too? Also you watch videos and you can tell when someone does NOT have them as they have a certain echo as they talk whereas the headliners soften that. Frankly having just traded in a five year old Renegade, it is just about the same sound wise... Now the 2500 is quieter, just HUGE.@@yeahman1975

    I put my 22 Mohave in off road plus with the rear locker on in 4 high and intentionally drove into, 2.5 feet of snow in a field here in Maine and never lost traction, it was actually pretty stupid considering I don’t have a winch and was alone.

      Yeah I think people complaining about Jeeps in snow have a tire problem or, like I said, drove older Jeeps with open diffs and no TC.

  • @Redfour5
    @Redfour5 7 місяців тому +1

    Good explanation... I moved to Montana in 2011 with a Subaru Forester manual transmission symetrical 4WD, rear diff. Drove great on roads, not so well off road... I got a 2013 Ram 1500 with the simple 4WD system high low, sounds similar to yours. I pushed that 4WD button a bunch in the snow ice. That polished icy area in front of the community mail boxes was a bear, traction control or not. I had to go 4WD to get up it. In 2015, I got a new one with a limited slip diff. It was a noticable and distinct improvement and you could feel it as it kicked in and you could move. Then in 2021 not even fully realizing it, I got the Ram "Auto 'full time' 4WD" and felt like I was back in my Subaru again. It was great.
    So, finally researching completely, I found that Jeep had "selec-trac" which essentially was the same as the RAM auto 4WD full time 4WD similar to a Subaru symetrical 4WD AND you also could get a limited slip diff on any without locking diffs, but Good Luck finding one with both on a dealer lot. NOW I say "similar" as in how what they do impacts the driver and vehicle not necessarily how each functions mechanically/electronically. Now Rubicons don't have limited slip as they have lockers but you can get "selec-trac" that is called Rock Track full time 4WD on a Rubicon. That would be a mandatory box check for me if I was getting a Rubicon.
    So for me not wanting a Rubicon, Selec Trac and an LSD were key boxes I needed checked so finally found one or actually found a dealer that generally ordered them for his lot darlings. He understood their importance of them. He said (general manager) most consumers don't know anything about them. They order 4WD and think they got it all. AND, they are the ones that need it. So, he at least ordered LSD but for most he ordered both.
    And from what I've found around 30% of most dealerships will order the limited slip diffs but very very few will order selec trac and only a couple across the country will consistently order both which cost MSRP 1690... with me postulating that may be why they don't order them. But, I found one 500 miles from home so drove to get it at 30% off MSRP in December. He's sort of an odd duck dealer in WA state. My kind of duck.

    • @LookitThisReview
      @LookitThisReview  7 місяців тому +1

      Great point on SelecTrac! I actually mentioned this during my recording on the drive but then cut it out in editing. In hindsight I should've left it in there because weather like I was driving in yesterday (mixed conditions with ice, snow and dry asphalt), SelecTrac would've been perfect! Good luck with your search!

    RE: traction control.
    In some systems, TC will bite you in the butt. One wheel loses traction the brakes are applied and the other wheel turns. If the second wheel does not have traction, TC applies braking to it. Result no power to either wheel, you stop. I have had this happen in two different vehicles. The three Jeeps we have owned were very good in snow in two wheel drive if the snow was not too deep.

    • @LookitThisReview
      @LookitThisReview  7 місяців тому

      Great point! Not all TC systems are made equal! @TFLcars does a great slip test with each tested vehicle that puts this in perspective.

    One upgrade they did in the JL better than the jk that i would love is the rear heater ducts. Heater and ac for driver and passenger front is epic. For the back seats however it leaves much to be desired in extreme cold and hot weather.

    I thought that first gear was "short" to offer the driver immediate and complete access to the entire torque band of the engine.
    When it takes longer for the gear to redline the engine, it is considered "tall".

      My dad had a 72 swinger with the "posi-trac" and he loved it in winter. I came home from the Marines in 75 and got to drive it some. It was killer in the snow and imprinted the "posi trac" concept in my brain ever since.
      It was one of the more "souped up" ones than regular. It got hit and totaled and he loved it so much he got another from like 74 or 75, this was about 1978 or so and it was a complete and utter dog of a car in so many ways... A POS compared to the earlier one in yellow with the black stripe across the back of the trunk.
      The second one was mud brown... and had a completely different feel, suspension, power and NO posi trac. But then my dad got a "Cordoba" with Corinthian leather and he loved that thing... I'm pretty sure it did have posi trac as he also loved that aspect of the original yellow "swinger."

      @@Redfour5 My friends dad had a 1970 Dart swinger that was vitamin C orange with a black stripe and black spoiler on the trunk and a couple of hood scoops' that said 340 on it. This was when we were a senior in high school back in 1997. His dad sold the car I think in 1998.

    • @Redfour5
      @Redfour5 7 місяців тому

      My dad got a Polara station wagon in 1964, bright red inside and out. I am almost postive it had limited slip. We lived by the Speedway INDY 500 and it was a team car for racing teams. I think Chrysler offered them to teams or teams associated with Chrysler in some fashion. So, it was "used" with like 2000 miles on it. Dad didn't like the red exterior so they painted it metallic gray for him to buy it. He got a deal as it wasn't moving likely because it was a wagon I believe in retrospect, but I was with him as he wheeled and dealed for it. It was exciting for a 9 year old.
      Well, they were not giving racing teams dog cars. From my research, it must have had a "street wedge" My dad only knew it was a wedge because his kids had told him (will mention later). He knew it was a "special" car as they had told him that at the dealer when he bought it and they noted it had a hydraulic clutch it was so powerful and as they were special built units for the teams. They said it would be a PERFECT tow car... It was, the Mustang was the Pace Car that year and Chrysler didn't want to get left out as it was their 50 year anniversary. I put much of this together later in research. I believe it may have had the Chrysler version of the "posi trac" as it related to taking off of the line. Here is an article on it. www.motortrend.com/features/mopp-1205-1964-dodge-polara-maximum-exposure/
      It was a beast of a car and a sleeper. A few years before his death I remember quizzing him on it for as much as he remembered. He told them he wanted a car to tow our pop up camper and wanted a station wagon. Some of this I got from my conversations with him on it. It towed with zero trouble at all and had a special cooling system. Everyone else was sucking for air in the mountains. Our friends over time with different engines were always having to stop in the Rockies to cool down.
      We NEVER had an issue. It didn't have an air conditioner most didn't back then but he finally after a couple hundred thousand miles gave it to his shop class in the mid to late 70's when I was in the Marines.
      The Swinger was used and my moms. (He was a Principle of a 1500 student school) and had a shop class on autos and they went nuts over it and rebuilt it. This is about how it looked before they painted it. www.pinterest.com/pin/536632111828298648/ It had more normal tires...
      I still remember it at 9 years old seeing it in red and then we picked it up in gray. I liked the red. That dealer also had one of the Turbines in the show room. You don't forget that as a kid. It was a great time to be alive. I remember being in it traveling out west with the camper in 69 listening to the radio as the landed on the moon.. @user-fk2dm5oy9f

      Absolutely! The Chevy trucks still offer the G80 "posi-trac" auto locker on the Trail Boss and other models. I'd like to compare them sometime, the big downside on the G80 is it is not user-engageable and comes on abruptly when it wants.

    I've had Ram and Jeep halogens and both suck in Deer land. I have two actual deer hit incidents and my wife has had one. I was a foot once from a full on Bull Elk down by Gardiner MT a few years ago and cussed saying I had to get better headlights. You should have seen the look he gave me. It was not kind...
    I've put after market LED spots low on every one of my stellantis/FCA halogen lighted vehicles to compensate for how bad the halogens are. I have them aimed to the sides so they don't trigger drivers to give me the "high beam" warning AND I can see the animals more easily. I now have the factory LED's on my 2500 for two years and no hits while they have given me time to maneuver, slow at least twice when halogens may not have. They were a mandatory box to check for me and my particular circumstances. Frankly if I lived in a city as I once did, they wouldn't be a deal breaker for me...
