What he's examining is the human DNA over which they had previously laughed about aboard their saucer. Something about it justifies killing us I guess.
@@starvingcollegestudent6407 Yes, it was the US president's speech where he was telling them to not be afraid of humans. they found it funny, and he was addressing that in the speech. my theory is that it was something like "you say we shouldn't be afraid of you, you should be afraid of us"
For me a big theme in this movie is realizing that some people (or Martians) simply do not like you, and never will, and you shouldn’t try too hard to understand it or make them like you.
And that humans are so stupid that they think all this happened because Martians didn't like the dove. The dove factored into absolutely none of this because as we see in the beginning of the movie, the Martians were already fixated on the destruction of Earth due to the cows on fire. Hell, no one except for General Decker considered the Martians a threat. No one considered that the first Martian broadcast to Earth's transmissions was a warning that the planet is surrounded and they're preparing to invade so the humans should surrender and die. The government stooges thought a scientist/engineer for make a translator device for the language the Martians spoke; a language that's so far removed from anything anyone on Earth speaks. Humans are stupid and naïve. That's what I took from it. It wasn't until the end when God knows how many humans were left did they find out what the Martian's real weakness was, which was high pitched sound waves. Probably why we see two birds get killed in the movie because they make noises like that.

When I was 3 years old... literally THREE, my parents would play this scene for me to scare me, to make me cry and have a panic attack. Then my older sister who was 7 would do things like, at Toys R Us she found a Mars attack toy and chased me around the store into the parking lot, or we were at blockbuster and she would find the vhs and chase me around the store. It caused extreme anxiety where I couldn’t sleep or be in the dark as a kid. Fairly certain I have actual trauma and anxiety from my entire family constantly showing me clips and terrorizing me with this movie when I was a toddler.
Well actually it was. There is another bird killed by the "marsian lady" which attacked the president. I think it is a forshadowing of the point, that the masians are vulnerable by high notes, like a birdsong or some country music ;)
It was a good theory though. Since the mythology of the dove on Earth is connected with the planet Venus which traces out a pentagram in the Earth sky due to the Fibonacci ratio of the orbital resonance of the two planets. Mars and Venus on the other hand have a 3:1 orbital resonance so it doesn't trace that shape in the Martian sky and so it doesn't have the same mythology of beauty, love, etc.
