Great video. I have excellent handwriting because I was taught the McLean's method of writing in grade 3. That year we learned cursive with a pencil after 2 years of practicing printing. In grade 4 we wrote with a dip pen. Every school desk had an inkwell cut out in the upper right hand corner to hold the ink bottle. That was back in the early 1950s. I'm 75 now and see young folks who don't even know how to hold a pen properly. Oh my gosh. My grade one teacher would walk by every student to ensure that they were holding their pencil in the correct position and if you didn't hold that pencil correctly, you were corrected and the whole class could you being scolded. The teachers had perfect handwriting and would write in straight horizontal lines with chalk on the blackboard. Writing was a subject back then, as in reading, writing and arithmetic. You also mentioned the letters you used to write as a child, Danny. That's another sad loss. All I ever get in my mailbox nowadays is advertising flyers, no letters, no cards, no notes. Even the bills have resorted to electronic delivery. Unfortnately penmanship has become a lost art. Thank you, Danny, for bringing a touch of art back to lettering. Greetings from Toronto, Ontario 🇨🇦

I am a lefty and have struggled with neat penmanship and smeared ink. I always wanted to write neat cool letters. Although, since I began using a fountain pen I have noticed improvement! I have tried using some typography books for inspiration in my sketchbook. I do love the way you make your letters and try to use your style quite a bit. Thank you for always inspiring me.

Love this!!! I write in my jour al everyday, paragraph after paragraph of where I’m at mentally and physically, never looking back anymore, just writing each morning when I get up. Always loved penmanship in school with the Nuns critiquing every letter. Maybe that s why I get hung up in the details of life and my art!

Wow, I do the same thing in my daily journal, description of movies, places, or things that happened! I used to just scribble the writing. Now I write so it can be aesthetically pleasing

Thank you for this!! I used to make all A’s and D in hand right. I think my mind moved faster than my hand. I made a D in art in first grade because I couldn’t follow the instructions because they were not in proportion. At age 60 I began painting but have journaled since age 12. Because of you I’ve begin illustrating my journals and it has opened my world.

This is a really interesting topic and I love your approach to "calligraphy" - turning your own writing style into sthg like it. I would love to do that as well. I'll try drawing my own alphabet. Love the one you did here.
Wouldn't it be funny if you could have favourite letters and just use those in writing. Hm, maybe that could be an exercise - turn every letter into a z. But it still needs to be legible somehow.
How do you not forget your thoughts while your writing slowly though?

    5:14 Can relate 100pc.
    School was a trainwreck, handwriting-wise.
I can write perfectly in the 'zone'.
But I'm never in the zone.
My pen has only one job, to get the thoughts out of my head, before they're lost to distraction or amnesia.
    Clearly it's not art.
Nowadays technology can help, but the pen is still the only truly accessible tool, ready to go in half a second.

Great video as always. I have horrible handwriting and was looking at a few calligraphy books. Maybe I just need to play around with my own style

Same here I was a successful gallery artist and illustrator but my lettering was poor. This was a long time ago, I wanted to be a cartoonist, and at the time one HAD to have good lettering to do that. This was the 1970S, so no computers.

Lettering is like drawing comment made me remember a scene from a movie in my mother tongue... There were two guys, neither could read or write. So they wanted to note down an address and they literally drew the address on a piece of paper thinking they got the right thing. Only later, it turned out, instead of the address they had drawn the words - "NO SALESPEOPLE ALLOWED" :P
