As someone who has endo and has had the laparoscopy, anytime I hear someone considering it, I tell them to do it. That surgery changed my life.
My doctor allowed us to go straight to treatment after surgery instead of trying on our own for 6 months. So right now we are doing our second round of letrozole with timed intercourse, and if this cycle doesn't work we are going to IUI. My doctor wants us to do a few rounds of IUI before we consider IVF, because it can take a few cycles before it works.

I was SOOOO afraid of surgery, had never been put under until I had back-to-back D&C’s for my miscarriage in July. If I could give you a glimmer of hope, I promise going under wasn’t as terrifying as I thought it would be. They will take amazing care of you. We love you sharing your journey and support your decisions either way of course. You’re amazing ❤️💪🏼

I agree with you! I also had a D&C last year. I was so scared and it wasn’t as bad as I thought and no where as bad as the laparoscopy. The CO2 they inflate your belly with hurts a lot if they don’t deflate the CO2 correctly or if it travels into your muscles. Have to do it if needed but I’m glad they have easier ways to diagnose now.

    Your body. Your choice.
If I was in your spot I think I would do the Laproscopy surgery. It's expensive as all heck but it would better your chances for IVF or natural conception.
You're points about IVF vs IUI when hubby has good SA results is making me maybe change my thoughts on doing IVF. I have always said I didn't want to take that step but our issues conceiving are all me not him.

So glad you have a plan in place and praying for your success! I did laparoscopy I'm only glad I did it because I finally figured out what was wrong with me (I had symptoms). Honestly if I had that option to do the non invasive surgery I would take that! I didn't conceive after my lap surgery and ended up doing ivf 3 years later and that had been successful :)

I had a hysteroscopy and laparoscopy after my last chemical pregnancy following my last embryo transfer. Got pregnant naturally like two weeks later. I'm not saying it's a magic bullet, because there's a lot more mystery to pregnancy than we like to think, but our fertility doc is huge on having the surgery if you have unexplained infertility. Another thing to look into for a cause of infertility- immune response/unknown autoimmune disease.
Also, your risk of infection from a diagnostic lap is minimal. It's two very tiny incisions. As for the pain, ask the anesthesiologist for a block with exparel and you will have minimal discomfort. I took one day off from work because of the block. Also, even if you do IVF but you still have endometriosis, you still have to address the endo or the IVF will likely fail. If you're wanting to avoid IVF, you could look into NaPro if there's a provider in your area that does it.

Please look into ablation vs excision if you decide to do laparoscopy! While excision might be more expensive up front, it is definitely a money saver in the long run. Less of your life spent in surgery. I hope you have your baby in your arms soon! Sending love

We also had unexplained infertility. So i did the Laparoscopy and i had endometriosis but we tried to get pregnant after that naturally for a year but it did nothing for us. They scrapped the endo that i had but it wasnt successful for us. We ended up doing IVF and got pregnant with the first round and i am now due in 2 weeks! Im praying for you guys.

I have stage 4 endo, had 2 laparoscopies, 3 m/c's and 1 failed round of IVF. No living children. I would recommend the surgery before IVF or you could potentially be throwing the money away if u do have endo. So difficult to know what the best route is. To be fair, i fell pregnant twice after my laparoscopy. It is painful (not horrific) but I had severe pain so was totally worth it. Good luck ❤❤

  • @greeneyes11111

Completely your decision, I would just do some more research. A laparoscopy is the only way to 100% diagnose endometriosis. I went to the endo summit this year to listen to the top specialists in the country. Too many OBGYN's are not specialized in endo. I just recommend you check out nancy's nook on facebook and go from there. If you want to start with the test that is ok, but if it is negative, you still can't rule out endo. Wish you all the best of luck! It is a very difficult decision.

I am 33 and am almost at 2 years....just another bit of food for thought. I didn’t know I had endo either. I was actually having to have another surgery when they found it. But the positive with the Lap is that if there is endo they can go in and clean it out while they are in there......it’s such a hard and personal choice for sure. I had the Lap done and that was the start of our TTC journey because of how bad my endo was. The procedure for me was easy. They are small hole punches in your stomach. Recovery was about 2 weeks out of work for me (I am a nurse) but I felt fine by day 4. Early movement is key. Definitely do not lay around. Day one pop some pain medication and start walking around the house some. It’s uncomfortable at first but it will help your healing.

Thanks so much for all this info! So helpful! My husband and I were diagnosed with unexplained infertility like you. We had been trying for 15 months before finally scheduling an appointment with a fertility specialist who recommended an IUI. We actually ended up conceiving on our own the cycle right before the iui. It was a miracle because they had only given us a 3-5% chance per month. Unfortunately the pregnancy was not successful and I had a miscarriage a little over a week ago at 7 weeks. Now we are back again at square one 😞 It's been so hard emotionally with the miscarriage but we both know we want to keep trying. I think we will try naturally this cycle since they say you're more fertile after a miscarriage and if that doesn't work then IUI. My doctor had not mentioned endometriosis as a possibility but now I'm definitely going to ask since everything always comes out normal and now we've had a miscarriage. I don't have any symptoms of endo like you. I'm going to see if maybe we can get the receptiva test. Thanks again so much for sharing your story and being so open and honest 🤗

As someone who has stage 3/4 endometriosis, I've had the surgery and had similar fears surrounding everything involved in that. I cried when I was going under but, honestly, it wasn't bad at all. It gave me certainty regarding my health and also helped spot a deep-infiltrating lesion on my ureter that I have to have a second surgery to remove. I would say, depending on the surgery itself, you could be needing off work for longer than 4 days. I was off for 2 weeks and then had a week holiday, so 3 weeks total. Surgery will give you the highest chances for conceiving naturally afterwards - usually the first 6 months post-surgery is the most fertile you will be because you're "cleared out". That doesn't mean IVF still wouldn't be necessary down the road. I don't have personal experience with ttc, as I have to wait until after my second surgery (it should have been done in spring, but was obviously delayed). Now, I must say, a big component in all of this for me is that I am from Scotland. The surgeries are covered here by the NHS, and I believe IVF is also covered for 2 or 3 rounds for couples struggling with infertility. I'm so sorry that you are in a position where finances are playing such a huge part of trying to conceive and wish you all the best during your journey.

Only you can make these choices. BUT....Do the laparaoscopy, it is a much more accurate and way to diagnose endometriosis. Don't waste time with the receptiva test. Apologies for the bluntness, but you need to find a way to get past the fear and move forward. Laparoscopy and IVF is most likely the combo with the best chances for conception.

  • @Etse-dj1wm

It’s probably best to go with IVF because they would still do the receptive test before they do they IVF. They make sure your uterus will be receptive to the embryo before they try to implant.

If I were in your shoes, I would do the receptiva test first. If it’s positive, then I would do the laporoscopy and then do IVF. The investment is HUGE, but it is your best chance. Have you looked into local/national grants? You can get a good chunk of money for IVF that way.

I’ve been on Lupron before (which is the drug that “suppresses” endo) and it didn’t work for me at all. It puts you into menopause and can cause awful side effects. If I were you, I’d want the laparoscopy because that could remove the problem altogether without just putting a bandaid on it that may not even work. I think the reciptiva test is a good idea but if it’s positive, the laparoscopy would likely be the better choice. Good luck to you!

I’m not saying this to discourage you.. but I’m 24 and have had two failed IVF cycles because of unexplained bad egg quality. Even though that’s likely not the cause of your infertility, it is becoming more common for younger women to have bad egg quality. It’s just something I wish I would’ve known because I, too, assumed it was only older women. I did a diagnostic laparoscopy and it was one of the best decisions I ever made and gave me peace of mind. I was back to normal in two days. But you know what’s best for your body and your journey! ❤️

Hey Ms. Rachel, one of the options you talked about was egg quality. I wanted to say to not discount getting your eggs tested. My sister-in-law was a healthy 27 year old. She had her eggs tested and the doctors basically told her she hold "Old lady" eggs. I would still find out if the egg quality is high.

I had a laparoscopy 4 years ago. It was easier than I thought and no complications. Even though they say recovery time is 3-4 days, it was much faster for me! Its scary going into it, but I kind of feel like you woul get more accurate results with the surgery than you would with the biopsy procedure. I don't even think the biopsy was an option for me to test for endo. Is this a new procedure? Also, did your doctor tell you how accurate it is compared to the surgery? With the surgery, I would think it would give you a better accurate answer because it doesn't just look at the uterus but at the ovaries and tubes as well to see if there is endo scar tissue on them where the biopsy wouldn't beable to tell you that.

Is PCOS the same as endometreosis?? IVF is the biggest gun in the arsenal, but even IVF can need repeated attempts. There is something else where the sperm is allergic to the egg, or vice versa. I think that then a sperm donor or an egg donor are brought in. It would at least be a genetic child of one of you. Let's say it was your husband, if he had a brother, the two of them would have the same DNA. Even a cousin would be somewhat close. I hope you don't have to go through all of this. Your age is in your favor if you must do several IVFs.
