perry92964 Gelatine was centuries old and Jello was half a century old and had already been through a super-popular phase earlier in the century. What made things Jello popular in the 50's was a combination of some women staying in the workplace after WWII while many had gone home and gone back to households that more convenience devices so they were often bored. Marketing and ad agencies took advantage of this with huge ad campaigns with weird recipes using convenience food that required more time and energy to make then the foods prepared according to package directions. Like the weird Tiktok food trend, but 1950s style.

I can totally see this being served at some sort of church ladies' function in the 1960s, along with about 20 other kinds of Jello salad. My mom (a church lady in the 1960s) was always making Jello salads for things, but I don't think even she would have gone this far. Put chunks of melon IN the Jello, yes. But not put the Jello in the melon. (I loved Jello as a kid, but despised Jello salads unless they had the little colored marshmallows in them.)

it was sort of everywhere even in the nineties, I ate quite a bit of jell-o as a kid, and I have no idea why, it's really kind of gross, isn't it? in Hungary where I currently live (I spent my childhood in the US) it's not really a thing unless it's on a specific dessert where it's fruits suspended in the stuff over a spongecake and in jelly-filled xmas candies which is like a thick jell-o surrounded by powdered sugar and a layer of chocolate, both are kind of weird but not objectively awful lol

Actually, on the dinner menu of the Titanic the night it sank, they ate a gelatin with peaches and french vanilla ice cream as tenth course (dessert) along with waldorf pudding.

Imagine 2020 quarantine but for only women.. that is what the 50s were like for women, lol. We were nothing but housewives and mothers.. and the occasional sex worker at the local brothel. If we didnt have UA-cam and all of these other things to keep us entertained these last 8 months, we too would be making the weirdest of shit. 😂

Hey emmy! Those seedy and syrupy thing you removed from the middle of the melon can be used to make a refreshing melon juice. Just mix it in with water and add some sugar syrup and serve on ice. You can even add some melon shavings to add some "pulpiness" to it.

As a child, we had Jello with fruit cocktail very often. We called it Jello with friends. We sealed it in tupperware and every now and them we'd grab the bowl and shake it vigorously, finally letting it set up. It was great. Momma liked to mix cottage cheese and lime Jello. She rarely had competition for that, however! lol

I used to make Jello all the time when my kids were growing up, especially in summer. I used the quick set method and the kids used to take the left over ice outside and put them in their mouths to slurp the jello off. 😁

the parsley totally brought me back to going to diners and supper club type places with my parents in the early 80s and there was always a parsley garnish on the plate. Also, I'm grateful that it was cream cheese on the outside, and not mayo. :)

I know you said you're in R.I. - my FIL had a recipe from home you might enjoy testing, he was originally from Woonsocket. The dish is Clams suspended in Lemon Jello. For the cold liquid portion of the Jello, you substitue 1/2 clam juice and half sparkling wine. You add 12 small clams to the mix the same as you would the fruit cocktail in this recipe you've shown, partially set the Jello first. Top with creme fraiche and chopped dill and serve as a cold starter, he served his in the clam shells after it was set. Perhaps the most peculiar thing I've ever tasted.

Hi Emmy! Suggestion when peeling the melon, try cutting the top and bottom a bit so the melon doesn’t roll around. Also a bread knife works well to peel melon as it’s flexible to bend around the curves of the melon. Hope that helps 😊
