The thought of being that guy and suddenly getting that is hilarious in an incredible way

I can only imagine this will continue at this rate, considering how the amount of people interested in finding lost media & amount of tools being used for it has skyrocketed in these past 4 years
I don't know how this year would ever be topped for lost media. TMMS and The Backrooms are probably the top-2 of the Internet era for lost media. Maybe if somebody finds multiple Doctor Who episodes or something.
The Quest for the Lost Drummer. Part 1. "They have been found", an exited Whang proclaimed. "Y-yes sire" the flying monkey chippered. "As was foretold!" "Silence! Fetch me the Drummer."
No like straight up though, I'm crying right now. I've been following the search since I was 15 in 2012 and I had put the idea of it being found to rest in my mind. I can't believe it finally happened. The drummer being relocated was the icing on the cake. I can finally rest.
To quote the acoustic cover's description on FEX's official UA-cam channel, "We looked at each other, Ture counted in and it felt like 40 years had never passed."
When Whang said "One of the FEX songs was called Subways Of Your Mind. Here it is" and the most mysterious song on the internet started playing I had *chills* . Can't believe just how much involved with this we've been and how happy it made me that this was found out. Can't even begin to imagine how wilde it has to be for the band.
@@OrgaNik_Music Internet bubbles. As he said in the interview Whang quoted, "there was no trigger". There was nothing in the story of "that mysterious song whose title and performing band are unknown" that would have made it pop up on his radar. Basically, the only way for him to have come across it would have been by complete coincidence.
I'm not just emotional at this point, I'm straight out bawling my eyes out cause this truly was the best outcome we can ever get from this search. Made me feeling all fuzzy & happy inside but just overwhelmingly happy watching the vid especially the reveal part.
I'm not subscribed anymore because of all the gross videos he makes. I check in for videos like this. He used to make more normal videos a long time ago.
Old band getting back together because the internet obsessed about some obscure music most people wouldn't think twice about is one of my favorite things.
@@GladeSwope yikes, rude but TRUEEE. Imagine if there's a totally-not-that-good album called Change of Heart by Positive Noise that nobody knows, but when the name go missing, suddenly everyone wanna find who made it
@@blackman5867 Not so cold, there were thousands of 80s and early 90s bands comparable to Fex, which became as though they had never happened. Much of that music is lost forever.
@@GladeSwope not just from the 80s-90s and neither just in terms of music, but also pretty everything that has ever happened from the start of the universe. There have been an unimaginable amount of unrecognised talents, arts, achievements, wars, historical events that never made it into history books... In case of Subways of Your Mind, it's an extremely lucky one for not ending up being forgotten just like many others. We can never know how much we have forgotten, so even if it's something that you think to be not that important nor impressive, we should still be grateful for everything we are having today, because we only know the true value of something when it's forever gone (I learned this in the hard way... many times)
Actually wild. Song found, title found, band found, band still alive and kicking, band was on the internet the whole time but just never ran into the mystery, band reunites. Absolutely perfect.
this entire story/ search and its conclusion is so wholesome. This is the kinda sh*t you love to see the internet being used for. Bringing people together , learning new things, appreciating old forgotten music and making the artists feel good knowing their song made it to so many ears. What a great internet tale.
Seeing the band members playing together again was so cute! That was like the most wholesome ending possible for this long search. Congratulations to everyone who made this possible.
Seriously, I am so happy at how wholesome it turned out to be, and I'm just glad that the people who were in the band are happy to talk about it, and have been taking everything in the best way possible.
The crazy thing to me is how much material there was about this band. Articles, actual footage of them playing massive shows, they appeared on a compilation record... they were out there and fairly prolific, but it still took years to track them down. Crazy.
It just shows how much of a bubble Internet Memes can be sometimes. A reminder that just because something was big on the Internet doesn't always mean the whole world knows about it. We all had this impression that this whole mystery was way better known than it was due to one or two articles on mainstream sites like "Rolling Stone" and were utterly baffled that there were no leads. Turns out that if this whole thing was broadcasted on every bit of mainstream media all over the place to the point of everyone knowing, it would've been solved in five minutes.
@@SpukiTheLoveKitten75 The internet in the past wasn't a well common place, let alone social media where people would talk about things outside of their native country, as well as doing deep dive searches in the 1990s and early 2000s. It wouldn't be until the 2010s when it was brought up that sparked the initial founding of the Lost Media group in 2012. And since then, for nearly 12 years now, many people have searched for old media that has gone missing, lost to time, or surprisingly recovered from decades back. Just goes to show there's so much out there that's not been documented than what's on the surface.
The best part of solving this mystery is that the band members are all still alive. They reunited and made an acoustic version of the song. We also got a few new recordings, including a live cut.
I'll just stake my internet claim here that I correctly interpreted like 95% of the lyrics and correctly guessed that subways of your mind was probably at least part of the title
When I found out that the song had been identified, I immediately thought to myself "know that we know the last thing that will finish this search for good is Whangs video." Its here and now it feels like the the end. I guess the Mysterious Song is the friends we made along the way.

I was like "no way Whang just uploaded another video not related to The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet, do I have to wait even longer??" I'm so glad to be wrong, holy shit.
@@CantTellYou I saw that exact photo from Hörfest in a photo montage video set to the live version at the Roxy in 85 this morning. You might be able to find it if you search "subways of your mind live with photos." I had been waiting for him to cover this all week.
I wont lie i genuinely got emotional when i first heard it was solved and first listened to the studio and acoustic versions, and i still do sometimes. Something about the people who made this wonderful enigma of a song finally getting both the recognition they deserve and the knowledge their song is as big as it is really gets to me man.
Same here- finally being able to clearly hear the lyrics after years of puzzling over what they were saying made me tear up a bit for some reason. That original recording and it's cover versions got so much play in my household, hearing a clear and full version of it feels magical.
Can you imagine how that guy felt when he pressed play on that subways track for the first time? Shit man I know the story and it gave me chills, it must have made him nearly pass out.
holy crap, this angle of the story I didn't think about. what Whang said is true, there's a chance Michael could've grabbed any old tape of his and everyone would still be looking, but even more than that, the only reason why Michael was contacted in the first place was because his name appeared twice in context, so there was also the very real possibility Reddit would've just chalked it up as a coincidence. basically, while a good amount of detective work was involved, the stars simply aligned
The day this tape hit UA-cam is one I’ll never forget. My feed was just popping off with uploads of “Subways” and, at the time, I thought nothing of it except “oh cool, another lost song was found” Imagine my elation when I finally decided to check it out & realized it was *the* lost song- that moment was legitimately the happiest I had felt in a very long time
Yep, the 2020s sure gave people the motivation to go for it, or let it continue to stay lost to time and never be recovered. It was a basically "Now or Never" type of situation.
Im so happy for all the FEX members, like having probably moved on from there old bands dreams only to suddenly have this cacophony of fans they never knew they had finally find them - such a great ending to such a stellar song
You know, I've had a lot of moments recently where I've grown bitter at what the internet has become. But seeing your lost media videos with bands finding inspiration decades later after they realize their work is very much loved makes me smile. And reminds me that this is what the internet has meant to be. Connections like this.
Everyone knows that hidden in some back room Fex and their song were always waiting to be found. They were most likely just chilling in room number six with a very identifiable celebrity.
Idk about anyone else, but I've been waiting for him to drop this one, so i doubt it'll be overlooked. Also, this is a way to do it and not just convey the regular details like everyone else who rushed to drop a video after the discovery
I love the ending to this mystery so much! This feels like the plot to an 80s movie, where a band of 80s teen rockers reforms to save the internet, or something. These guys turned out to embrace the meme and love and just love the art they made together. This is so cool!
Old dudes reuniting to save the local recreation center... but in modern days, that IS the internet for a lot of kids, and it is also under attacks from the forces of fell businessowners who wants to make it terrible to use and profitable for them. Honestly, the concept tracks. The song that was memoryholed and forgotten, was actually DELIBERATELY forgotten because it was so righteous it could free the minds of even the most ardent "well we have to make the user experiences worse with ads in order to drive up profit margins"-believer, and the business-lords at the time knew if their song got played the game would be over! So now they have to race to.... some place or other in order to save not just the local rec center, but the world! Yes.... yes I would buy a ticket to see that movie.
This story always makes me think of my dad, who was in a band when he was younger, in the 1970s (their vibe was Led Zepplin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd stuff). They were relatively successful locally in the place we lived in. My dad said one of the "rival" bands had two brothers who had giant afros and drove to the gigs in a mini cooper, which was bascially just hair from one side of the car to the other. My dad's band manager was a guy who bascially just came to all their gigs, so just made him it, he told them to change their name to somniferum which means Opium in Latin. They didn't want too, but one day they thought why not lets change the name for the next gig. That night the gig was raided by the police, so they never used that name again. Apparently the manager used to smoke weed all the time and fell asleep once, while still smoking and burnt his house down, he was okay at least. The band was all on a bit of shoe string budget as the van they had, had a hole in it so you could see the road, as they were driving around. Eventually they got to a point where it was either focus on their jobs or for some reason go to Germany of all places and get a record deal. They decided to get on with their jobs. But this search just made me think of them and their band. They are now in their 60-70s and have now restarted the band.
Awesome. My brother discovered a Canadian reggae-metal band called Zeroscape back in the 2000's, they were awesome. One of them sold his house so they could tour Europe, playing in pubs to audiences of 6 people and sleeping in their ever-broken, graffiti-covered van. Then they did it again the following year! There used to be loads of songs on UA-cam, and talk of a proper record deal, but after that things just went quiet.
I was wondering what was so special about this German festival, like there was some super gross incident a La that one where one of the band members shits on stage… but the minute the song was mentioned, it hit me like a ton of bricks! I actually got chills.
that was a very challenging search, I still remember the craze of 2019 when everyone on reddit became a detective and started digging for archives on NDR, fun times glad to see that some people never stopped looking
Dude, I cannot believe it was found. So happy. Between this, Ulterior Motives and me finding the song stuck in my head since I was 15, it's been a great year for identifying songs.
Noop people were saying it could be called like the wind, blind the wind, or subways of your mind and i searched for all three including the lyrics in the chorus and nothing showed up anywhere. It was there but it was like something went wrong with the algorithms maybe? and i noticed some videos are now showing up that i couldn't see on a very old channel i finally decided to move on from and get a new channel like 2 or 3 months ago but still i couldn't see anything called subways of your mind. It was also just that they were searching for it a much longer and harder way lol combing through too many details rather than truly getting straight to the point and not immediately searching for it in the new wave genre and for festivals.
I turned this video on to listen to in the shower. When I heard the reveal of the song, I almost slipped and broke my neck trying to get out and rewind the video to make sure I heard what I thought I heard. 😅
I know there are people who want 'preserve the mystery forever', but moments like these are simply like magic! I love being a part of the LMC, even if just a small piece of it ^^
Compared to the EKT search, it was so much better organized and satisfying because every lead would unlock a new piece of information that would then unlock another piece of information. Literally could rival a video game.
I cannot believe I was an 11 year old little swoof in the grass at the time this was recorded and only now was it re-discovered. I hope these guys make bank, HUGE bank off of this, they deserve it. It's a damn catchy tune! Thanks Justin!
When I searched for "Like the Wind found" this video didn't come up and I was sad because I thought Whang hadn't done a video about this. Then I added "Whang" to the end of the search and found this video. I don't get why youtube isn't showing your video in the search. So glad this is found, now we need to identify the band of "The Fall of the King."
This makes me SO happy. Good for them! Back in the 90's I was in a garage/basement band. We eventually settled on the name "DFX" (The Effects) - somewhat similar. However any recordings of ours that I may still be in possession of will never be released to the internet. Thankfully. lol
I love that all the members are online and have never had this recommended to them, they are not too old to tour, aren't the rolling stones still touring at 80?
Saw an interview of one of the FEX members on YLE (Finnish tv channel). Apparently he thinks it would be fun to start making music again with the old group.
On a Reddit AMA, they said that they’re all too old to be able to do a lot of traveling at their age. They’re not the Stones, who have private jets and limos to take them everywhere However, they are potentially considering doing a handful of shows together! Maybe play a few nights at the same venue and have the fans come to them instead. That way the fans get a live show and they get to stay healthy
Lot of old bands kicking around. Iron Maiden is still going and most of them are between 66 and 68. The notable exception is drummer Nicko McBrain who is 72, and he just retired from touring two weeks ago.
I have been waiting years for this video. This song captivated me because I lived through the 80s in the early years of my childhood. I, like Darius, also taped songs off the radio. I can't tell you hiw many times I listened to the local college station and thought "What the hell was that?" If I missed it, if I didn't have my cassette tape ready with my finger on the record button, it was gone forever. You guys did it. You captured lightning in a bottle. It fills me with nothing but joy and nostalgia to see.
This turned out to be a real wholesome, feel-good story. Glad to hear that the dudes are still around and have plans to make more music together after all these years. I can only imagine what it felt like to discover that YOUR song was the "most mysterious song on the internet", and that whole group of extremely dedicated people banded together to track down its origin. Good work everyone, it's a great song.
Such a misleading title! I almost didn't click on it thinking we were still a few weeks away from your conclusion video, but here we are! Why am I crying????? Such a great conclusion!
DUDE I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S FINALLY HERE I’m so happy the end of this search is so wholesome, the band reuniting doing interviews and going on TV is so nice, i’m truly happy for them 💚 can’t wait to stream it!!!!
I LOVE these lost media videos! I've been obsessed with post-punk, New Wave, and '80s music in general since I was a wee child, and all of these songs--"Feels Like a Wish," "Subways of Your Mind," and my favorite, "Ulterior Motives"--have really meant a hell of a lot to me lately.

I can hardly believe it. It's so cool to see these guys' reaction to learning about the song's fame and status. Great that they got back in touch with the drummer, too. Good job, Internet.
Hädrich said in a German interview that contractually it was quite normal for producers to just send out recordings from their bands to radio stations without them knowing. So back in 1983 they didn't even know their song was played on the radio, which only adds to the weirdness.

Do you know in a weird way Phineas and Ferb kind of predict the situation that will happen? This just reminds me of the whole episode of Love Handle, a band that no one really knew about, only had one song to go off to find the band, and now they all come back together to replay some music.
My hat's off to you, sir. Yours was the first video about this phenomenon, and that was about 2.5 years ago. Like many of us here, I was in a band, and in 1982 we started playing clubs. We recorded maybe four albums worth of demos until the early 1990s. Along with that, we had promoters that would set us up opening for bands I never heard of again. Guitar stuff, synth bands, bands that tried to sound like Elvis Costello, and others that sounded like a cross between Billy Idol paired with the B52s. So, these last couple of years I've been thinking; "Did I open for THESE guys?" But, with us all having gone our separate ways, I had no place to begin. I was left by myself, to think and think and think...to no avail. I'm SO GLAD that these guys have been found.
Literally my favorite lost media mystery, solved in the most sweet positive and beautiful way ever, it's made my week! Thanks for bringing so many of us to it!!!
I'm so glad that not one but all members are all alive and well! Once I read a theory of "what if they are all dead" or if it's only gets found when theyre dead and they never experience the success or "what if they don't want it to be found", that made me bummed out on the search, i'm glad its not the case.
I only learned of this mystery about 4 months ago but I've been checking for updates every week. This reveal made my year. Thanks to all the internet sleuths who put in the effort to solve this mystery.
Last year when I was welding on the night shift and I had to bike to work, I would listen to this song on the 6-mile trip. Let's just say it sounds really really good on an official recording, and it already sounded really good on the scratchy recording.
Before the discovery for years I kinda personally wanted to the song to go undiscovered. It truly made my imagination run wild and I guess assisted me into being almost obsessed with the song, I would at one point listen to it everyday for close to a year straight. It was even a staple for my gym routine. One of my own personal theories was the song somehow leaked into our timeline back in the early 80’s onto the radio and hence why it was a mystery for such an incredible amount of time. But seeing how the band members are happy and overjoyed with a piece of art they created 40 years ago get recognized is something unspeakably romantic and beautiful and now I’m actually happy it got discovered thanks to this video!
Indeed, "The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet" was basically perfect opposite of what "lost media" typically means, we had the media, but were missing a lot of the information about who/what/where/when about it.
I'm never disappointed by waiting for Whang! The past week or so I've seen a flood of recommendations about this, so I couldn't avoid spoilers of the song's title and band name, but I strictly skipped watching any videos because I knew where I'd get the best coverage. I was out of the loop and only first heard about the song through this channel, so it's only fitting it ends here as well. Great video! I genuinely got a little choked up seeing those guys reunite and enjoy this attention after so much time.
Honestly, when I saw the news, I couldn't believe it at first. But I've seen dozens of youtubers talking about this, including Mutahar (SomeOrdinaryGamers, or SOG for short), and if I know one thing about Muta, he fact checks everything he talks about, so seeing him covering this topic with such excitement actually confirms this is true. Your video was the last piece of puzzle I needed to see to tie everything back together, because your first video about this whole chase introduced me into this strange internet mystery, and I wanted to be sure you found your way to the exciting news and the fair conclusion of this 40year old hunt. Thank you for every coverage you did with TMS, now known as "Subways of Your Mind" by FEX. I watched the whole video, despite the fact it's actually late right now and should have gone to sleep long ago. I wish you the best of luck for upcoming mysteries and I thank you sincerely for introducing me into this hidden gem that now fully surfaced. Good night y'all!
I like the thought of the original band members finding this video and watching it, and at the end they're recommended "placenta jerky". Thank you, Whang.
It's so wholesome seeing all the band members willing to get back together after all these years to play again, and not only play, but to play and re-record the most mysterious song on the internet.
I saw the title and thumbnail and knew immediately what it would be. It's been so good getting the best possible ending to the story. Seeing them play it unplugged on TV is something I can't stop watching over and over again. And on top of it their other songs are legit bangers. Edit: Fuck, why did you change the troll title? That was dope as hell.
im honestly really happy we have found it after all these years because despite my love for lost media, i was mostyl interested in this mystery because the song is great. it fits right inside my favourite playlist.

It’s been a long road. The song “Heart In Danger” from that FEX tape is also a hit. Great band.

One of those uncommon "good internet" stories
I was one of the small percentage of people who thought the lyrics were "subways of your mind". I am feeling unreasonably proud of myself.
How anyone never heard it I don't know, it's so clear to me.
I'll just stake my internet claim here that I correctly interpreted like 95% of the lyrics and correctly guessed that subways of your mind was probably at least part of the title
It's such an out there saying but it makes sense. I'm gonna find a way to use that.
Many people thought that line in the LYRICS was exactly that because it sounded somewhat clear. Not many people thought that was the exact TITLE.
@@uncled39I didn’t hear “subways” but I’m usually terrible at hearing lyrics anyway.

I could already imagine the guy audibly screaming in joy in his room when the first few notes of the song hit. The dopamine spike must've been crazy.
holy crap, this angle of the story I didn't think about. what Whang said is true, there's a chance Michael could've grabbed any old tape of his and everyone would still be looking, but even more than that, the only reason why Michael was contacted in the first place was because his name appeared twice in context, so there was also the very real possibility Reddit would've just chalked it up as a coincidence. basically, while a good amount of detective work was involved, the stars simply aligned
That’s the case for a lot of solved mysteries

I can't tell you how much joy I felt seeing those 3 old guys singing their song from 40 years ago. What an incredible story!
That's an awesome story! I would love to know more about the band and if they have any recordings out
Salute 🫡
That sounds like it would make for a watchable indie movie.
@@andrewbarrett1537 I did think when all those musical biopics were coming out it would have worked as a comedy of a band who failed to become big.

It's crazy that for nearly 20 years, it all came down to a case of misheard lyrics.

Probably, but only at the knife end of their record label.
Saw an interview of one of the FEX members on YLE (Finnish tv channel). Apparently he thinks it would be fun to start making music again with the old group.
On a Reddit AMA, they said that they’re all too old to be able to do a lot of traveling at their age. They’re not the Stones, who have private jets and limos to take them everywhere
However, they are potentially considering doing a handful of shows together!

Can't believe I missed this until now.
Same! Just came across it now!
This is incredible! And it got found a day after my birthday, literally the best gift I could ask - I love this song.
Oh nice another Whang video I wonder what this one is abou- THEY FOUND THEM?!!
It feels sooooooo sweet knowing its found and the original band could get together to perform it again. What an amazing journey
It's so wholesome seeing all the band members willing to get back together after all these years to play again, and not only play, but to play and re-record the most mysterious song on the internet.
I swear Whang lives in the background set of a spooky theme park ride.
I think that’s Casper’s house (the friendly ghost of course)
I saw the title and thumbnail and knew immediately what it would be.
It's been so good getting the best possible ending to the story. Seeing them play it unplugged on TV is something I can't stop watching over and over again.
And on top of it their other songs are legit bangers.
Edit: Fuck, why did you change the troll title? That was dope as hell.
