Awesome. To those complaining there's not a live band, or that there's some backing, a few points: - the guts of the mix are made in front of us, clearly improvised, with some amazingly daring one-off licks. When you have to play overa groove for 5 mins, you have to nail it, and he does, every time. Most of us mortals would play it safe and he never does. - live bands struggle massively to play with any kind of looping, only the originator knows it inside out and if they miss a cue the gig is screwed. If you don't like looping, er, blame James Brown and others, who popularised the idea of repetitive groove 50 years ago. It has been outselling other forms of music ever since, so Jacob is entitled to harness it. - if you want to hear all the tracks live you are going to have to pay 10x the ticket price for the massive orchestra required. - do you really want to sit there for 5 mins while he builds the entire first groove from scratch? and then another 5 for the next section? I think not - what he is doing is a great compromise, the suspense of starting off a groove, then bringing in the recorded stuff with style. Also note he changes the mix for every video, no mean feat, most musicians would just recycle it. He is a total pro and has thought hard about the process, please don't pretend you know better or could do better. People always used to go on about KT Tunstall cos she does a bit of looping. This is several dimensions above that, no offence to her or others who can do it. No-one else does it this intricately. Let's not pretend we have seen it all before. While there are some great musos and performers and composers out there, no-one else on the planet possesses all these skills in one go. Yours, desperate to see this in person...
This performance is just using modern technology and a whole lot more extra work to create a sound that was popularized by groups like Parliament about 40 years ago. If you appreciate it as performance art that's fine, but it isn't good music.
I'll never understand the people that are firmly convinced that the best music has been created in the past, and that to try and use elements of older music is to try and recreate it, and therefore its somehow inferior. Why does there have to be some musical apex that can never be achieved? Why can't Jacob just make modern music that has elements of traditional funk without being placed on some manufactured leaderboard? It's performance art, sure, but it's still just music. Enjoy the expression of the moment and don't get so caught up in what once was. Who cares about how great Parliament used to be? It's not like he got on stage and said "Who wants to see me make funk better than Parliament used to make it?"
Are you Jacob?maybe his lawyer? Let the people think and speak whatever they like. Some will love this stuff, others don’t and is perfectly ok.. He is maybe a genius an makes this stuff to please himself first. I appreciate him so much , he’s great ... but personally i won’t ENJOY more than 15 minutes of his performance...sorry...
What I love about his music is that it's complex and interesting and actually sounds good. It's not just exploring complex theory for the sake of doing so...it's fairly complex harmony that's still accessible and sounds good to the untrained ear
Ahhh Jacob - You didn't tell the audience to modulate! LOL The smart ones figured it out as they went. I don't know how you kept track of it all and kept singing in the right key without a comping instrument. Amazing. And the gospel piano just took it to the moon. Mad love from California.
Even if he didnt have absolute perfect pitch, He still heard the notes he was just playing before. Some people once they hear a note cant get it out of their head for a while xD
To quote a comment on another Collier video: _"His favourite instrument is the audience"_ The audience inclusion, his energy, his mad music and raw genius is beyond words. This is one instance where it's a blessing _'to be played'._

To those that are saying Jacob Collier sucks or has no soul or doesn't connect with his audience, you need to understand... Jacob is literally on a whole new plane of existence when it comes to mastery of music theory. Those of you that dislike his music are probably those that also listen to mind-numbing pop music which follows a 4-chord structure with absolutely no variety or substance to the music. Then you've got Jacob Collier, who literally infuses so much substance into his music that most people cannot follow him. There's a reason so many people are calling him the next Mozart; he hears music differently and is able to adapt to many different styles without even breaking a sweat. This IS the next level of musical progress (it was supposed to be atonality... what a joke that was.). Anyone that is watching this is witnessing the next musical genre being born. Jacob Collier is a genius. Enjoy his music for what it is.
aju86 give him another year to grow. Then you will see. But I agree this is the most amazing thing I've ever seen or heard. He just keeps growing and improving like a musical funky jazz Godzilla. David

Through small gestures that may seem trivial, we know that he knows, and this leads him at times, beyond an apparent generosity, to show condescension. His way of greeting his partners, in particular by nervously patting the backs, shoulders or hands of his partners, even sometimes of the conductor, shows at what level he places others and at what level he places himself. It was obvious with Daniel Ceasar especially in his duet on the song "Best Part". We can also sometimes feel a lack of modesty in the way he plays, of speaking while playing the keyboard pretending it is harmless, of making long starts and ends, and also of playing with his power over the crowd. There is something uncomfortable there sometimes and yet his talent is undeniable and you never tire of listening to him. The resumptions are all beautiful. I am a fan and at the same time I tell myself that we must not kid ourselves about the character, that is to say about the young man who is hiding behind the artist: is he also virtuous?
