Know this an old video, but came acrosd it last week. Because of you i bought a dozen grips with solution etc and for the 1st time in playing for 40 years i changed all 12 grips tonight. I am well pleased. Thank you. Didnt realise it was so easy untill i watched you.
Use a vise with a rubber shaft holder. Also a paint roller pan works well as a catch pan for grip solvent. Only use that flat blade on steel shafts all other shafts use the hook blade so you don't cut the shaft.
Just re gripped one of my hybrids after watching your video…super easy. Thank you! I just found a new side gig 🤣. Can’t believe I’ve been paying someone to do this for me.
right I just started to research after I took club to Golf galaxy and they gave me wrong club. Then another time the guy didnt add 2 pieces of tape. Just tire dof getting bad work.. so I want to learn to do it myself..and yes this is EASY! No need to pay someone or wait 2-3 days for it do be done.
I regrip my own clubs, my wife would kill me if i did it on the dining table and use her pan. I watch you stuff all the time you crack me up especially when you fell in the pool. Keep up the good work.
I found a much easier way to regrip my clubs. I showed the wife how do one. Then left her to do the other 12 while I went for a few beers with my mates. Came home and she done a great job.
Thanks for the confidence to try this! After the learning curve on the first one, the next club was literally a 5 minute job. Never would've tried this without your vid!
I came across your videos over the weekend,I did a regrip for the first time myself after having golf shops do it for me.What I noticed is how lazy they were. They had just added tape without removing the old stuff. Thanks for the video.
I hadn't done a regrip on clubs in over 20 years (hadn't played in that long). Tried to do it recently and the tape I used wasn't good and solvent was junk, so it got stuck. All that stuff matters. Got a different kind and it was easy! A paint pan for paint rollers, works well to catch the solvent.
Thanks for the video man! I thought it would be a huge pain in the ass, after watching your video it literally took me 5 mins to regroup my driver. Not all heroes wear capes!
I started doing my grips with the air compressor it is so easy and the clubs are usable as soon as you are done. once you start this way the grips go on and off within minutes and there is no need for any tape or solvent. the compressor blows up the grip and it slides right off. if you need to adjust them just put more air into it and it moves easy. It takes me about 20 minutes to my whole set of club s now.
Also when you were lining up that other grip next to the one that you’ve just installed, make sure they are the same length. Sometimes when you slide a new grip on you can end up stretching it beyond its intended length which also tends to make the grip thinner, not to mention the fact that aesthetically you would have grips of different lengths when your set is done
Just used these instructions to re-grip three clubs on my own. Peeled off at least three layers of tape from other re-grip jobs at my club. I feel like a real man.
Your video saved me once again, thanks. I remember the first time I saw it, I fast-forwarded over the part where you remove the outer layer of the tape, which I found was a critical step 😀
Great video. Did not realize it was that easy to re-grip. I just bought new clubs and after a few rounds, realized I need the oversize grips. Getting alot of thumb and hand pain with the standard size.
Quick tip, i use a piece of masking tape around the shaft just below the grip your taking off and mark the align centre of the grip so when you put on the new grip you can align the new grip with that mark on the tape. To remove the old double stick tape heat with a hair dryer to soften and it peels of easy. I have also used WD40 but leave it over night to dry.
Its so easy to do this. Just need a couple tips. First. I mark where the old grips end with a piece of tape and mark the center point. When you install the new ones, you know exactly where to stop. A hook knife is best, cause it keeps you from scoring the graphits shaft, which could end up failing. I use a blow dryer, not a heat gun, to remove old tape. Peels right off and doesnt overheat the shaft. Thats another problem. I see a lot of folks complain that its hard to get the grips to slide on. Use a lot of solvent. Drip pan salvages it. Lots on the tape, lots in the grip. Then pour the solvent in the grip and after, pour that on the tape also. Grips, even tight ones, slide right on, no problem. Not using enough will ensure that the adhesive isnt softened enough and you will waste a grip. Dead simple.
Oh yeah. Get a golf shaft rubber vise clamp. Makes things much easier. You need a vise too. Then, you can just pull the hook blade through the grip with ease.
i just changed my putter grip thanks to this, did the method with so little solvant by just draining the solvant you put inside the grip like he did ! very effective thanks !
always take your stance with the club to ensure final proper alignment, use a bigger hook exacto blade, deporting solvent from the butt end was genius, loved having a helper at the end!
I'm definitely in favor of golfers regripping their own clubs - at least with the frequency, you suggest. But, doing it at the dining table is a bad idea. A vice of almost any kind would have made the job sooooooo much easier and faster. And if you or your fans have an air compressor to "blow" the grips on,, the job becomes even easier, by an order of magnitude. One last thing: If people are actually going to use your method, they should be strongly advised to KEEP THAT GRIP MOVING once they start sliding it on. Stopping before the grip is seated -especially if they don't use plenty of solvent - will result in the grip getting stuck, and probably requiring that that brand new grip be cut off!
Depends on the tape and solvent. I've only had issues with grips getting stuck using mineral spirits. I haven't had any problems with Brampton solvent.
To show others this can be done at the kitchen table without a vise or ginormous workshop loaded with tools… is key! It’s as simple as doing it at the kitchen table! (And, the performance return is huge!)
Thought it was harder to put new rip on, so I just kept the old ones on the shaft. Will be buying new grips and change them thi weekend. Thanks for the tutorial.
Hi Matt - I have to say yet another not only entertaining video but also one that gave me confidence to change my grips myself. Once you've done one its easy, and you save money and time- boom.
The green handle tool is a groove enlarger not a hook blade knife to cut grips! Get a workbench with a vise. Also use a cheap plastic paint tray to catch solvent that is reusable.
Hey Shorgame - I got a set of grips from guy that used air to change grips - I got a small little air compressor from wally marts for about 30$ and have been changing grips in less than a minute(almost all the time) - No chemicals and they are ready to go instantly - plus I can take them off and use them on another club if I change the lineup - If you change the grips twice a year this is an ideal setup!
Great video.. Informative and entertaining..lol watched your video gave me the confidence to re grip my driver.. love my new grip and next on my list is do the rest of my drivers and irons!! Thanks again!
Thanks man! Just took an inch off my driver- I'm short- and regripped it. I don't know how much faster I'm swinging it now but it's definitely faster. The sound it makes through the air is noticeably higher pitched. I'll find out tomorrow morning!
Matt.... I really have no clue why ive been getting my clubs regripped by a golf outlet...It looks so so easy!..Thanks for showing us and keep up the good work.
@@connornichols2759 Yeah especially if someone had never gripped a club before and didn't have an actual gripping station or shaft clamp at the very least. I can guarantee it would take them several hours to get through a set, if at all.
I practice almost daily and need to change them about twice a year.. tried the Winn grips and they were so soft I needed to change them after about 3 months .. yes, I do have quite a strong grip
You need to get all of the old tape off! Hint to those trying this for the first time: Don't skimp on the amount of solvent. If the tape is not saturated, you'll have a lot of trouble getting the new grip on. And don't use a dull knife! Get a hook knife at a hardware store. They're cheap, and won't scratch the shaft.
Watching him remove the first grip and tape and saying this is an easy project, while I’m thinking that doing that 13 times is about the worst way I can picture spending a Saturday.
You sound like your from Boston. Anyways second time watching this video and you are the man. Thanks for the laughs and knowledge. My wife still has no idea I use her pans 😂😂😂
Hi Matt, did you leave links to all the needed tools here? Mainly the grip removal tool, tape, & solvent? Finding a razor blade & drip pan is easy but a point in the right direction on the specialized stuff would be super helpful!!! Thank you.
I just re-gripped my set of clubs. For the solvent, I went to Lowe’s and picked up a gallon on odorless mineral spirits from the paint section. It works absolutely great for your solvent. Just make sure you shake the jug before using it. It’s also super helpful to have a vice to put the club in. Makes sliding on the new grip much easier to line up. Also, be liberal with the mineral spirits/solvent. Once you start sliding the new grip on, you have to make sure you get it all the way on. If you only get it halfway on, and then you get stuck, your going to be screwed. You’ll have to cut that off and start over. Two biggest things for success, 1) vice grip so you can keep you shaft level while you align the new grip to slide it on. 2) be liberal with the mineral spirits/solvent so the grip slides on easier. Almost forgot, your going to want to use a rag it towel to help your grip when pushing/sliding the new grip on. The mineral spirits are very slippery, and you’ll need to have a good grip, because it does require a bit of force to slide new grip on.
This is so easy to do. I was going to Roger Dunn for so many years. The part that took me the longest was removing the old grip tape. The rest is a breeze!
Make up a moxon clamp for a workbench. $40 and some plywood. Since it will rack for the changing diameter and hold it safely with the wood grip face no damage. Now you can easily AND safely remove and replace. It’s a no brainer.
Thank You for this video. I followed your directions and was able to regrip a complete set. Also, A cheap large turkey tin pan from the grocery store works great to catch the solvent in. Instead of your wife's good pans. I like to live. 🤣
An option I find easier is to use a heat gun or blow dryer and heat up the old tape and it will peek off nicely. (tip...use tacky type gloves and you can just grab the tape while warm and it peels off even easier.) It will come off very easy and you don't have to worry about cutting your graphite shafts.
Yes just saw Golftown guy use torch to heat old tape and the curved tool shown in video. Had old tape off in 10 seconds. Would take me an hour to remove old tape on a set using a utility knife. Very tedious!
Good one dude Ive learned to use my air compressor and blow them on and off so much easier no solvent needed ready to go soon as there on no waiting for solvent to dry. Use my heat gun for a min to help grip to stick to tape no grip turning. your welcome
Pro tip on how I do it...They make a fitting that fits in your vise (get a vise) it comes with most grip kits , along with solvent. Blow air into the end hole with your compressor (Get a compressor) reuse the old tape, don't bother taking it off until its shredded. Old grip off , add solvent to shaft , work an inch of the new grip on , hold grip at shaft with one hand , blow air in hole on new grip while pulling with other hand...It slides on...Works even better with two people. My brother and have been changing our grips this way for years, neither of us has ever had one come off. Its so easy to do you can experiment with a few clubs at a time , and see for yourself, old tape left on works as well as new tape. Scraping that off is a pain.
Love your videos, but this could be done much easier... Vice from box store - $20 to $40 bucks Rubber clamp from golf store - $5 bucks New sharp, lol, hook blade from box store - 10 for $5 bucks And I know you did a steel shaft... but it’s a not a good idea to use a regular blade on graphite shafts
A few other tips: 1. Use a paint roller tray to catch the re-grip solution, keep marital peace (in case she finds out you used her ovenware). 2. Use a putty knife to remove the old grip tape, esp on carbon shafts; a box cutter will scratch your graphite shafts. 3. Use Goo Gone to finally clean off the shafts, the remaining grip tape and glue will come off "like butter". 4. If you have a bench clamp buy the little rubber insert to get a nice positive grip on the shaft. Just makes life a bit easier. Enjoy, as you can see it's not that hard to do.
Ever experienced getting solvent (mineral spirits in my case) inside the shaft and had problems with it affecting the epoxy bond to the club head? Happened to me and I’m paranoid I should just get them all reshafted now but want to know if I’m overthinking it.
I have def found the best way to remove em is stick the nozzle of an air compressor down the hole on the grip and after a few short pumps it will pop right off.
There is a hook-blade tool called "The Rhino" that is made for slicing through the grip. Got mine from Golf Works. I'm all-graphite now, so haven't done my own grips in a while. Too difficult to remove the tape.
Been doing my own grips nearly 50 years. I was hoping that there was a magical way you’d show us to remove especially old crusty tape and petrified rubber. Compressed air method works ok but tape and solvent is more reassuring for me.
"Regrip twice a year" the best I can do is once every 7 years
Lol same. I normally end up getting new clubs before I regrip lol
I do once a season🤷🏻♂️

If you have a small compressor it's very easy to blow the grips off by blasting air into the top
Wait, what? Do you mean it makes it easier to pull the grip off? Or, does the air actually cause the grip to slide off without having to pull on it?
I started doing my grips with the air compressor it is so easy and the clubs are usable as soon as you are done. once you start this way the grips go on and off within minutes and there is no need for any tape or solvent. the compressor blows up the grip and it slides right off. if you need to adjust them just put more air into it and it moves easy. If using a Stanley knife on a carbon fiber shaft, make sure you don't cut into the shaft. Seen shafts snap because of this.

Vice from box store - $20 to $40 bucks
Rubber clamp from golf store - $5 bucks
New sharp, lol, hook blade from box store - 10 for $5 bucks
And I know you did a steel shaft... but it’s a not a good idea to use a regular blade on graphite shafts
A few other tips:
Thanx for the video. Our workload at our shop is getting busier from people watching this video.
You’re welcome
Ever experienced getting solvent (mineral spirits in my case) inside the shaft and had problems with it affecting the epoxy bond to the club head? Happened to me and I’m paranoid I should just get them all reshafted now but want to know if I’m overthinking it.
"Try not to hurt yourself." Always good advice.
Thanks for this. Just did 2 clubs
Awesome good advice thank you very much 🍷🏌️♂️🍺
I have def found the best way to remove em is stick the nozzle of an air compressor down the hole on the grip and after a few short pumps it will pop right off.
Thanks! Exactly what I needed!
Subscribed! Great video!
Golfworks grip station $110, do them anytime, fast, easy and no mess
