How to Adjust Fox 36 Fork Travel

Changing the travel of a 2018 or newer Fox 36 mountain bike fork is surprisingly easy, though it does require purchasing a new air shaft in the correct length for the new travel configuration. In this video I take you through the general procedure to do this, and I explain a few little tips that the Fox official fork travel adjust video does not explain!

Good video and fun project. Having messed this up a few times, there are a few good things to do. Dont reuse crush washers. Not worth it. Triple check the oil chart at fox, as different dampers use different oil wt and amounts. That's too much slick honey, you dont need that much and it can clog the pos/neg equalization port (per Fox technician). Just a minor coating will do it. Lastly, airing the fork up properly can be critical to avoiding fork suck down. This is due to the dimple design rather than separate valves or shrader valve equalization ports. You want to add in air 15psi at a time (you rarely do it so might as well do it right). Add 15psi and cycle the fork 10 times slowly to get equalization of both air chambers. The dimple is about an inch and half down from the top of the stantion. If you just jump it up to 75psi...when you equalize it...the air is so pressurized that it often screws up the equalization and can suck down you for 10 to 15mm.
If you do get significant suckdown (some is super normal with dual air springs and a good thing)...then simply remove air 5psi at a time and cycle the fork slowly 10 times. Then air it up 15 psi at a time and boom, itll be perfect again. When you remove it 5psi at a time, you are allowing it to equalize without sucking down the fork an inch or two (which happens as the neg chamber isnt equalized) and eventually sucking the entire fork down at low psi...so much suck down you cant get it to extend to the equalization dimple and now its crappy. This avoids that and just takes an extra 15mins. If done right, you can get all/most air out with the fork fully extended still or mostly. Cheers

Kids are racing - bike shops are weeks out (even though Fanatik and Earl's always make the race happen - thanks!) so anything that can help me keep the equipment running better makes the season so much smoother. Nothing worse that your kit ruining a weekend. The shops benefit also - the more you know, it seems the more they can do for you. Jeff you mentioned the foot-nut was chewed-up at 8:00 ...it's a good idea to use 6 point sockets on fragile aluminum fasteners... that might prevent rounding of the nut.

great video. to answer your question, i have a 34 Fox Forx with 130 mm front and 130 mm back on my bike. i am good with 130 mm, but really really want more, so a simple upgrade is 140 up front...especially since i haven't serviced my forks since i got it 3 years ago and they need it!
My bike (2019 Vitus Escarpe VRX 29) came with a Fox 36 Factory G2 150mm. My last bike (2016Yeti Sb5.5c) had the same fork buy 160mm and I miss than extra travel. Plus I believe it'll improve the Escarpe geometry so I will definitely upgrade this winter when I typically service the fork. Thanks for showing how easy this can be! PS. My kids love your channel!
PPS. That is such a cheap upgrade for a fork that costs around $1k!
Best advice on how to reduce travel on a performance fox 36 front shox from 170 to 150... just to test and compare on some local trails.
I bought a used 36 that has been traveled from 150 to 170mm. I gave it a try in my ripmo and it feels great =) In case I wanna experiment with 160mm in the future, I hope this video will give me some hints for a hassle-free change of travel :) .. back to the vid ;)

I did combine it with a slightly softer SAG (20,5%), lower bar (1 medium spacer) and 5mm less rise.

I've done this on a Fox 34 to go from 130mm to 140mm and I've done it on my current Fox 36 to go from 160mm to 150mm. The only thing I do different is i add some slick honey to the seals before I put the lowers back on.
Nice! Yeah I put some slick honey on the lowers to get into the seals there, and the fork is WAY plusher than before!
What were you aiming to gain going from the switch from 160 to 150, out of curiosity?
Voluntary Anarchy my guess is he upgraded his 34 to the 36, bought it at 160mm but that was too big a jump from the 140mm so he put it at 150mm. If it was a bike spec’d at 160mm it would really make no sense so hopefully this is what he was doing. If the bike was spec’d originally at 130mm, 150mm is still a big jump but doable a lot of the time, whereas a 30mm jump would be way too much on almost any rig.

Unlike most, I'm gonna drop from 160mm-150mm on my bike. I do a ton of climbing and the 160 can get really annoying in the steep climbs. I hate to give up the 10mm as I love to shred but I think the trade off will be good for my riding. Hope I can do the job. Gonna give it a shot!😬

I have a 2018 Ibis Mojo 3 with a Fox 34 and a 2020 Rocky Mountain Slayer with a Fox 36 (later years came with the 38). I"m a big dude (like... real big) so I picked up a 38 for the slayer and I'm going to bump the 36 down to the Mojo to stiffen up the front end a bit. So I'm dropping to 140mm of travel for that.

Go for it! Just double check that code at the top of your fork leg to be sure you're following the right procedure for the exact year/model fork you've got.
Hey DJ MTB.. Thinking of doing EXACTLY the same thing to my RIP9.. Love the 150, but think 160 would be even better.. Let us know how it goes.. Seems pretty straightforward....? My only hesitation is that its about $150 worth of parts there, and my local shop would charge 240 total... so I know I would save 90 bucks, but maybe it would be worth that to leave it to a pro..... :)

running an x-fusion metric. which can drop from 180 to 160 (its in 180 atm). watching this vid to get info drips on how the performance changes between the two modes (different fork granted but its good to compare).
That's a great fork! I still have an old X-Fusion Vengeance that I rode a ton at 170mm. The suspension performance is similar but you'll have less travel and will therefore need to run a tad less sag. Same percent, but it'll be a smaller amount due to the shorter fork. For most ordinary trails, 180 is overkill, so it'll probably be good. Unless you mostly ride triple black steeps!
I'm currently running rockshox recon sl at 130mm and was thinking of getting fox 36 in 170mm then bringing then down to 150mm travel. All for my marin san Quentin 2
Did you done that upgrade? And how it feels? I have San Quentin-2 but found only fox36 150mm travel for 29-wheel, so i think it seems like fork with 160mm travel for 27.5 wheel
I am working on shortening the travel on my 36 from 160 to 150-140 because I want to put the beast on my next trail bike.
Got a 2018 fox 36 on a bike I perchased second hand with the grip dampener. Ideally want to upgrade to a grip 2 dampener stick a vorsprung luftkappe unit into it and in increase it’s travel from 160 to 170 if possible.

I’ve a 2018 Fox 36 Fit4 160mm travel. I did the Grip2 upgrade myself. Made the fork feel like no other.
Also removed the air spring to remove the grease. There is way too much grease there.

Currently have a 160mm on my yeti lunch ride. Was considering trying a 150mm to see if I would get the bike more playfull. Only 1/2 degree of head angle though.....

Shane, I removed a 150mm travel air shaft and installed a 160 travel shaft.
that's way too much grease on the negative air chamber... you're compromising the performance of the negative chamber with that much...
Levo 2019 max recommend fork travel is 160mm so my 36 grip 2 came 170mm!

I ride a cube stereo 150 with a 160mm fork and wanted more travel up front
Does adding travel bring the bottom bracket up and change the head tube angle? Or so does the fork sit at the same height but just have more travel?
Switching from 160mm to 170mm It raises the fork (axle to crown length) ever so slightly. So yes, it technically does raise the bottom bracket up a little and slackens the head angle slightly too, but not enough to be very noticeable. 10mm= .397” so that extra 3/8” won’t be too noticeable. If you start raising your fork by an inch or more of travel, then you’ll get noticeable changes in geometry
Reducing travel on a 160mm fork. I have a bike with 140mm fork, but it takes 9mm QR, which just seems flimsy to me. I a spare fork (project that never happened) and a front wheel with a 20mm TA, so time to beef up the bike.

2018 fox 36 on my Giant Trance E. Going longer because I’m probably riding it a bit rowdier than most ebike riders and using all the travel very often.

I want to go shorter travel on a 2017 Fox Factory 36 Grip-2.
Yoi do not re-use crush washers. Always use brand new ones. Also the air spring assembly does not have to be greased so much.
Im running a DVO diamond 150mm on a 2017 Norco Sight C7.1. For 2019 Norco bumped up the fork travel on the same frame/model Sight to 160mm so am going to remove the travel reducer to push the fork back to 160
Right on Phil, hopefully it's easy to change the travel. FWIW, volume reducers do not shorten a fork's travel.

Just got grip2 fox 36 forks and want to reduce to 140mm travel and use it on my new ripley build, didnt like 34 on it need bigger fork for this bike if you ride like you :)

Time for maintenance on a used bike I purchased.
I'm getting a 160mm 36, MIGHT want to drop it to 150 if it doesn't climb right as I'm mostly around boring flat trails, though I want it for the primo stuff 2 hrs away.
Jeff, very nice video as always... doesn't Fox recommend replacing the crush washer after each use (i.e. at 7:30 )? I think the idea is that it is only meant to be deformed 1x time. I hope you fully recovered from your last big crash by now.

Can you increase the fox 36,,100 mm 26er,, I would like to increase that fork to 120mm. Currently I'm running a RockShox DJ 26er. It's the 140 mm version I want to reduce it to 120 should I just add spacers would that bring down the ride height

I’m going to change out my travel on my 34 to 160mm just to see if I like it before committing to a 36. I’m 150lbs. and usually ride a little bit under recommended pressure in my shocks. It just feels so much better but I still feel I bottom out to much, even with 3 spacers. Does anyone think it’s a bad idea to ride 34 with 160mm on a Jeffsy for extended period if I like it? How much difference does a 36 make over 34 for lighter riders?

I changed my Fox 36 EVOL 2018 from 160 to 170. I bought the uprgade kit for my Orbea Rallon. I ordered the airchamber compared to my DDGL code. But.... Damper side is to short! So a knocking sound when lifting front wheel :( It s the sound of the end of the damper side fully at longets position. Really dissapointed. Had to mount the 160mm back.

You really think you could see 10mm, which is .393” with the naked eye?? Why don’t you measure the exposed amount of upper stanchion? On a Fox fork there will be around 2-3 mm of of stanchion that don’t go all the way into the seals at bottom out. Take some calipers, or even a ruler/tape measure and measure the exposed stanchion and see what it reads (remember to subtract around 2-3 mm). That’s how much travel your fork is set to

Jeff-nice video with easy to follow instruction. Are you using a short offset fork on the Ripmo AF? I have a Rockshox RC2, 160mm, 51mm offset that I was thinking of using on my build.
Thanks Fan! I wish I had a short offset fork, but this old one I have here is still a big ol 51 offset. It works fine, but the shorter offset is better. Handling will be more predictable. But yes, you could run that 51 fork just fine.
Ive got a 2018 fox float 130mm wanting to go 140mm. Do I only need to replace just the one side with that part from Jenson. Hopefully you know what im trying to say. The fork travel adjustment part that's only one side right?

Going to go against popular trends here....If i was to lower my fox 38 @ 180mm to 170 or 160mm is a change of both the air spring and damper needed. Also and i hope this isnt a real stupid question.....will this lower the ride height or just the length of the travel?
Hey Avg, on the 38 you need a more expensive air spring assembly but the damper does NOT need to be changed (or even touched, really, besides removing the footnut so you can pull the lowers)
So if I bought a fox 36 160mm could I set it a 150mm? Just because my bike has 130mm of rear travel so I heard you should stick within 20mm of the original travel? Would be sick if you replied 🤟
Yes Tom! As long as it’s a 2017-2020 fork there are 140-170mm spring kits available. I think I they are about $43 through that link I’ve got up there!

Have you thought about slapping a 29er fork on your HD4 or HD5? You know make it a mullet bike. I think it would make a good video. I'm want to try a 150mm 29er on my HD4. And please don't say just get a RipMo. I've ridden it a few times as well as the new Ripley. I'm not a fan of 29 inch wheels in the rear but there is advantages to the front for sure

You’d need a 36 140mm air shaft for the correct year, around £60. Just be aware if you bike came stock with a 160mm travel fork then dropping it 20mm isn’t advisable as you will lower the bb and steepen the head angle.

Yes. They make the job much easier. A cheap one on Amazon is about $12. Well worth it.
Hey Jeff. So comparing a 150mm and160mm fork, the lowers and stanchions are exactly the same? The only difference being the air spring? Is this the same situation if comparing something like a 160mm to a 170mm?
Yes. They’re all basically the same fork (36’s) but with different air shaft lengths. Think about it- the air shaft extends down to bolt to the lowers and never moves relative to the lower legs. The shorter the shaft, the less distance from the air piston/seal to lower lower legs. I’m not sure what the minimum travel a 36 can be set to (and that differs from model year to model year) but any Fox 36 can have its travel changed. My 2022 came stock at 160mm and I believe max (for 2022 at least) is 170mm. I’d have to imagine the lowest you could set the travel to is around 140/150mm but you’d have to check with Fox for whatever model year you have. Each Travel length will require an air shaft for the specific travel you choose tho- these aren’t travel adjustable on the fly like some old Fox Forks used to be. Just as an example, I changed a 170mm RS Lyrik all the way down to 130mm. It works perfectly fine.

I have an SB5 and was thinking of boosting up to 160mm and adding volume spacers to steepen the compression curve while increasing small bump compliance

I've got really important question. Can you change travel in fox van 36, it isn't the air suspension, it has got a spring inside. I really need the answer cause i dont know should I buy new fork for my dirtjumper or I can use my old fox van 36

Travel changes with the installation of the new air spring shaft. If you want to service the fork by installing new fork seals, this is a great time to do that.

That's exactly the fork I mod'ed to 160 in this very video! Just punch that 4 digit code from the top left of your fork lowers into the Fox site to be sure it's the correct procedure for the year/model fork you've got there.
Jeff you went from a 150 to a 160, but can you go to a 140mm from the 160? Currently have 160 with PUSH ACS-3 coil insert so not sure how things will turnout...
Bandit, Fox generally has 140/150/160/170 conversion kits to fit all 2018-20 36 forks. Not sure what additional parts you'd need to convert from the Push set up back to stock. Try contacting Push first!

Hey Stavros, I'm 174cm (about 5 foot 8 inches) and the 150 fork kinda sucks on the Ripmo. The Ripmo works great with a 160 fork, and while Ibis does not condone it, a 170 fork is even better. The Ripmo is pretty low to the ground, so the lower front end means more pedal strikes. The head angle is also a tad steep for how long the bike is, so the slacker angles feel much better. The new Ripmo 2 is a full degree slacker- and everyone reports that it rides better. My fave set up thus far was the Trust Shout 178mm fork on the Ripmo 2. If you have a 150 fork and a Ripmo, definitely bump it up to 160!
