The players were hit from much closer. Line judges were hit from a distance... ball lost some heat.
Try getting hit in the back of the head with a 100+ mph serve when you don't even get to see it coming. It'll drop you like a sack of potatoes. Also, 80 mph groundstroke in the right spot hurts like a mother. I've been hit a few times, and some shots definitely shock the body more than others. Most shots that hit ball boys/girls and lines people are miss hits or travelling all the way from one end of a the court to the other.

@@RobRossiFan my partner for doubles serves around 120 mph/ 200 kmh as well and after he hit my head for the second time like this we stopped using the Australian doubles strategy during his serve

The idea that you're NOT supposed to hit the ball right at your opponent is weird to me, especially in those doubles matches when all 4 people are up at the net. I'm supposed to hit it to your racket? I'm gonna hit it right at you, I don't get the controversy.

I think it means when you don't have to. At least, that is what it means to me. If you have a short ball that is a floater, that point should be yours. If you have the time, angle away from the opponent net player if you can. I see people that aim at other players with every opportunity. I've seen guys in 20 dollar 3.0 clinics that aim for women half their size with full swings on points that are already in the bag. And, these are guys that are clearly not 3.0 players. After they hit you a few times it becomes obvious that they could just as easily hit somewhere else and still get the point. I've seen pros that get angry at being hit when their were other options and the point was realistically over.
Now, if it's hot and heavy at the net, you have someone that hogs your net, or you're playing someone that volleys with more consistency than a wall, then all bets are off. Sometimes ya gotta give them a little chin music to make them think twice about standing right in the way.

I'm always under the assumption that if I hit a crap volley, but i leave no room for passing, I will get hit. No hard feelings.
The part I enjoy is that if you hit your opponent with the ball and it doesn't bounce before the hit, you get the point. It happens so often that there is a rule and so players are mindful to not get hit when they can get away from it.
Also, I've been hit square in the face with a ball before and ended up with a concussion. I was at the net and my opponent was only about 10ft away from me.
I've been whacked in the nuts by opponents in doubles, including after the match.

I'm sure you too have bumped your elbow into a table or doorframe at least once and hit a nerve in the wrong spot, so imagine the same paralyzing feeling.
turosfagyi wrong side of the elbow, most of the nerves are on the under side of the elbow, not the top, plus a tennis ball is made of rubber with felt/wool on the outside, not brick/wood which actually hurts when you bump it

Been playing tennis my entire life. Never understood why male pros (I never see the women do this) act like complete babies when hit by a ball. Unless you get hit in the nuts, the face, or your neck, you're fine.
I've been pegged countless times, mainly in doubles. It doesn't hurt.
