In the latest clip, Dave Mays reflected on The Source being dragged into Benzino's beef with Eminem. Mays claimed the beef wasn't meant to be personal as Benzino was simply concerned with overwhelming praise Eminem was receiving from mainstream media amid the "wiping out" of once-successful Black-owned companies in Hip Hop. Mays also pointed out that The Source were early supporters of Eminem. While the release of Eminem's old, racist recordings damaged the magazine's credibility, Mays explained that they had an obligation to report on the tapes. @@LanceG007 there’s a difference between being unbiased and having a journalistic and cultural duty to inform your audience. They got the scoop (first look) at the information that was pertinent to the audience they serve.
They put out a tape that was a few years old. I had racist peeps in my high school and guess what?! They grew up, matured and advanced. I will not hold their past against them forever since they're in a different space now so is Em. Em proved enough that he truly loves black people, gave a lot of them jobs and gave 50 his shot when almost nobody believed in him.
That whole beef situation with Eminem and Interscope Records was not a smart business move and it was one of the reasons the source magazine had suffered due to advertising being pulled away
This is only a small part. Zino used the mag for his personal vendetta against Em & Shady and that eventually let to the demise of the mag. XXL took the spot and ran with it. i am glad The Source disappeared since they became corny once Zino had too much input.
These labels be the feds no body scared of these rappers or producers
From watching these interviews the conclusion is...Benzino was the downfall of The Source.

Dave seems like a smart guy for the most part, but not smart enough to not let Benzino use The Source as a tool for his own career. I'm all for people being down for their friends, but there is boundaries that need to be established and critical thinking when it comes to business. Benzino turned The Source into the Hip-Hop National Enquirer, which is funny because Dave went hard against his own writers going against rappers, but it was okay for Benzino to use the whole magazine to further a career agenda in the same aspect? Dave kind of an idiot for that.

If we really want change it starts with us fulfilling an obligation to ourselves: to look at all humans as humans and nothing more than that, once we have achieved this we can start to understand each other’s point of view (and hopefully learn there isn’t much different between us).

Unsigned Hype discovered Biggie, DMX, Common, Mobb Deep, Jay Electronica and a few others early yrs before they came out. Em was in unsigned hyped a year after he was killing underground battles, freestyles on college radio, sway & tech (1997 freestyler of the year) March 1998 literally the same month he was signed to Aftermath.

It actually started in mid 90s when Dave Mayes went behind editors back and wrote something in Source about Benzino’s group RSO even though they all thought it was (reviewers and editors). Many walked out and he had to hire a whole new staff. Then they gave RSO mid album 4.5! They gave mid Lil Kim album 5 mics. Benzino admitted to taking mics off Em album! It became so corny.
The word he was looking for is 'envious'.. Benzino was envious and jealous of Eminem.. Em was huge but there were other big rappers making hits.. Jay, Luda, 50 etc.. and Eminem was also putting on plenty of other black artists D12, Obie.. it wasn't no Elvis type nonsense.. Em was getting critical acclaim selling records, movies because it was his moment.. the end..

This is my ideia: Benzino got the tapes, and before releasing the tapes to the public, he kept it, and he decided to jump start his rap carreer by dissing Eminem, before releasing the tapes. But that backfired, because there was no coming back after "The Sauce" and "Nail in the coffin". You could've released a tape showing Eminem as part of the KKK. Those two records, are simply two of the best diss tracks of all time. Benzino got murdered lyrically, and lost credibility right then and there!!

Those 3 kide were definitely shopping around to see who was gonna be the highest bidder. I don't know wtf is going on but i will say that they definitely brought this to the attention of Eminem but knowing him and everyone in his ear at the time probably told him not to worry about it and get back in the studio. Interscope already cut him a huge check. They were not letting their artist go without a fight.
