I signed up for a free comedy course to raise money for charity with Ultra Comedy 8 weeks ago. I perform my first ever gig next Sunday and I just wanted to say thank you. Your channel has been the best help I have found on UA-cam and it gets me through washing the dishes everyday which is a bonus. Thank you for giving this wonderful gift to aspiring comedians Gary.
Thanks for commenting. Amazing to hear your taking the dive and getting it done. Don't be hard on yourself is all I can say. Have fun up there and focus on being likable over funny. If they like you they'll laugh. That venue has long nights. I'm not sure what the current system is but be prepared to be there quite a while. Best of luck with it and please report back and let us know how you get on.
I've watched a few of your videos and wanted to say thanks for the tips. I'd been writing for 20 minutes every other week day for a month and now I'm starting to write for 20 minutes each week day based on your advice.
I searched Whole UA-cam all over the universe , even From Uranus , 😁 I did not Find one Comedian Broadcasting His Own Well Experienced tips, Very Nice Thank you Gary michaels💝
Im older experienced alot. Always felt drawn to the arts. I started using your ideas on just writing, ive seen few of your talks. Very helpful. Especially the one on just start. Like the juggler who can do 3 in a cascade. On a bigger note This is good life advice.
Great video Garry . Learning a lot watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would love to see a video with more details about how to add jokes to your existing story. There is a less freedom as you don't want to veer away from the main story, but adding more punches could increase more engagement to the story.
Thanks for the tips. I’ve been using some of them already, but it’s always nice to get validation/confirmation. And I have been reworking some bits during my writing sessions. Making them better. And then ripping off those to come up with tags, or Segway into another bit.definitely very helpful. Thanks again.
Many thanks. Delighted to hear they are that much value. Indeed I'm really looking forward to hosting again. Not long now. I'm optimistic about the restrictions easing. More so than I was before.
Thanks for these great tips! One thing, though: Could you mention an example for the "switching punchlines" tip? I don't quite see how that might work :)
Thanks for commenting. It's been quite a while since I've made this video, and switching punch lines could mean a lot of things. But in brief, you have a set written out and would like to spice it up after some time. If you switch punch lines in a literal sense, meaning just move the order of your jokes around and jumble up your set, you'll be forced to connect it together in a way that's going to make sense again. This will force you to find more connections between topics in your set in order to make the new sequence work. I probably haven't explained it too well here, and it's 5am, so I'm not going to think too much about out however I'll make another video and dive into the topic in detail.
Dave Chappelle actually has an entire bit about this in one of his specials -- "..so I kicked her in the pussy!"...good example for what you're looking for I think
Indeed. Chappelle's use of this is just fantastic. He openly exposes exactly what he's going to to and still hits them with it when they least expect it. I do go into more detail on this in a previous video. You cna check it out here. ua-cam.com/video/nGlIogw7ClU/v-deo.html This point starts at about 02.10 There is lots of examples online too. Best of luck with it.
Hi Gary, thanks for the content! I've heard a few comedians talk about writing a journal. It sounds like a good way to develop a writing habit and I would appreciate a bit more insight into it.
Haha, brilliant stuff. Thanks for clearing it up . At least I've not completely lost my mind. Hope the video was helpful and many thanks for commenting.
My straight up advice is to just keep editing them as often as you can. Once you come across something that really works well for you keep that and edit the material around it. I have a video on how to make your set longer, you can check it out here. ua-cam.com/video/4wAVif-b268/v-deo.html Even though it's not exactly what you asked for the theory might help in terms of your writing and editing. Best of luck with it.
Many thanks. I settled for this background out of having a major green screen problem that took a long time to sort. I'm playing with a view different ideas for the look. Keeping it as fresh as I can.
Thanks for commenting. Currently I don't do any private tutoring. The channel is currently my only connection to the comedy scene. When things open up again here in London I'll be running nights again and hosting workshops in person. I'm also looking to expand nights and workshops to other cities but all that will be announced when everywhere starts to open again. Cheers.
Yes, I really believe this. As long as a person understands how they are perceived by the audience they can be funny. I'm not saying they can pull off any style of comedy. They have got to find their own voice and speak to the audience in the way the audience perceives them to be. Not an easy task and will take a long time, but even those who consistently perform bad onstage can improve with continuous little tweaks over a long period of time. However, if perception isn't the focus and they just rely on jokes, then yes, unfortunately it might not be possible.
Thanks for commenting. I actually don't have much advise for sketch comedy. It's a form of performance that I really enjoy watching however have zero experience in performing onstage. If I could offer any advice it's to perform as often as you can outside of stand up shows. Approach every type of show you can cause you will nearly always stand out as different simply because sketch comedy is rare. Sorry I couldn't give some detailed advice but I'm certainly not going to pretend I know more than I do. Wishing you all the best with it.
Thanks for the tips. I've been doing standup for about two weeks. I tell funny anecdotes...no jokes. I get laughs but I'd like to tell jokes. Is this a mistake?
Thanks for commenting. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. There are no mistakes. As long as you're getting up there and developing as a comic and performer in general, then everything is a win. There doesn't need to be any specific style you follow. Experiment as much as you can and always be tweaking something. How is it going for you now?
@@LetsTalkComedy thanks for taking the time to respond...it's going well...I'm doing standup in Spanish in Argentina...I work as a writer, so content is not an issue. Thanks again...
