  • Located on Telegraph Hill, a meticulously preserved locale in San Francisco, Hidden House breaks away from conventional architectural styles and emerges as a contemporary house amid the historical backdrop of the city. To realise the project, OPA demonstrates contextual sensitivity with the facade, which features timber as well as a traditional bay window with extensive glazing, fitting for the streetscape. Furthermore, the facade is adorned with wooden panels transitioning from vertical to horizontal orientations, symbolising contemporary innovation over traditional craftmanship.
The contemporary house is composed of three fundamental elements. The house tour unveils how the facade of the home serves as a disguise, concealing the inner workings of the residence along with its modern interior design and architecture. Additionally, the unique house boasts two distinct zones, each with its own character and personality. One zone presents a vertical and abstract aesthetic, where the materiality is obscured by vibrant blue paint, while the other exudes a raw and refined charm. The initial zone aims to immerse visitors in a psychological experience, utilising colour as a bold element within the home’s interior design, despite its relatively low cost compared to other features. Transitioning to the second zone of the contemporary house, OPA has achieved a strikingly contrasting effect. In this area, materials are expressed in their raw and refined forms, all oriented horizontally. This deliberate choice fosters a juxtaposition between the two zones while maintaining a connection that allows them to harmonise seamlessly. Furthermore, the spirit of expression is intricately woven into the interior design and decor, instilling a sense of spontaneity and dynamism throughout the space.
For the lighting, the architect has installed two systems. In the second zone, meshed sheet modules with LED strips are fitted. Ultimately, the overarching idea is to unify the entire space while juxtaposing the spotlighting in the blue zone. The spotlights in this area serve a directional purpose rather than casting light horizontally, helping to distinguish between spaces and materials. With an emphasis on illuminating the central areas of the home, including the kitchen, OPA incorporates a skylight to welcome natural light deep into the contemporary house. Additionally, the skylight’s illumination adds a layer of complexity to the interior, contributing moments of expression to the interior design and enriching the character of the home. True to San Francisco’s architectural style, the unique family home artfully conceals its contemporary nature behind a metaphorical mask, reminiscent of the traditional facades of neighbouring residences.

I love the local project and almost every house but this house I couldn’t imagine living in. I can see why you have included it because the architecture and design is amazing and it does challenge typical housing configurations. It fits more with a contemporary office space. Also I can’t help worry about kids hitting their heads on all those sharp and hard corners and surfaces.

Great video. The house feels more like an artistic experiment first and a place for a person to live second, very highly tailored to the tastes, feelings, and thoughts of an individual. That works very well if the person who has those tastes, feelings, and thoughts is also the person who's going to be living in it, but I can't help feeling that if I ever visited it I'd listen to the reasoning behind the choices, and be able to recognise the artistic beauty, while also being very happy that I don't live there.

I agree, it's more art. They used architecture to evoke feelings. The feelings I get are cold, sterile and unwelcoming. Imagine what this would do your mindset, if every morning you would wake up in this dreary sad environment. Who did the architect design this for? I wonder if the architect who lead this was more interested in being progressive for the sake of being progressive.

It's dystopian, not contemporary. Way too much going on to be contemporary yet not enough going on. Definitely not contemporary.
Absolutely amazing piece of artwork though, well designed, so many little details everywhere.
I could go on and on with what I spot that is just awesome, from light on stairwell to the floor sloped up the bottom of bay window and exposed fastners on the steel joists.
Kudos to this architect. This is what happens when someone with passion for architecture and design just let's loose and comes up with what they want, regardless of how abnormal it may be.
Also, his choice of finishes, really amazing though also the most cost effective options too.
Amazing work to the one who created this.

We went into an historic neighborhood desperately trying to save an iconic look and feel, and then we did everything we possibly could to undo that while still abiding by the rules, but not the spirit, of the planning commission. Bro, not the flex you think it is.

While I don't disagree with this, to me the damage was done prior to this project.
The homes immediately flanking this one (around 1:10) look like they were done with far less care to the connected properties. Having lived in a historic neighborhood for 25 years (Indianapolis), I've noticed that replicating history seldom leads to good outcomes. It's hard to know how much of the property was intact before this renovation, but if I were on that block - I'd be happy to have that home carry the neighborhood in the future. The scale and massing are appropriate, they did a great job of hiding the overhead door and used natural materials.

The blue, metals, concrete and rigid sharp lines makes it cold, I do appreciate the contrasting hues of blues due to the sunlight but still cold ...in the room the ply wood use is nothing new however it does warm up the space and appears to be the only warmth, besides the sun coming in through the windows. The contrast between the cold of the inside and the lack of warmth is also felt when the gentleman steps out onto the rooftop...it will date fast (retro comes to mind)...unless it can be kept at the crisp immaculate state it is now, looking brand new...the outside facade is appreciated, I enjoy the modern twist on the historical and classical buildings that surround it...personally it does not feel like a home but a good effort...

The external shell, the external design is gorgeous; love how it works within the streetscape. And that rooftop, love. I was taken aback with the blue interior😆, just a personal taste thing as blue is my least favourite colour. I also feel, we have many gorgeous industrial interiors here in Australia with concrete, steel and glass… but look far more up-market and refined, and it comes down to detail. This example just needs some refinement for my tastes, and I’d love to see some of that gorgeous external timber, steel and glass brought inside to add some warmth. It reminds me of a Tardis. There’s no relationship between the external skin and the internal skin.

I have seen this project's exterior many times in person, so I can comment here in ways others might not be able to.
The facade is absolutely exquisite and eye-catching without being loud, and it adds to the lexicon for those in love with screen compositions. When it's lit, the veil radiates and is stunning and calm rather than out of character.
SF has more wood-clad buildings than you would assume if you look for them. There are also many junk facades from renovations done in the '70s-'90s, so we can't be too precious in search of pure historicalness. Remember that the city also celebrates innovation as part of its identity.
The inside may be a miss for some, and I get that, but it is extremely driven by the concept and/or the client, and the execution is on point, so the project's goals were successful. If we were the client, it would be hygge-y af, as is all the rage, but that's not this house. You do see peaks of wood and skimmed concrete, and it would have been nice to see some of that warmer detail captured in the video.

a lot to unpack with this one. architecture is all about opinion and this project is more polarising than most. I guess as long as its answered the client brief, who's to judge too critically, but I'm not convinced its going to provide a legacy for future inhabitants - build in redundancy? perhaps the idea is to inspire a future gut renovation and remodel?

Ooooh, the build up to 3:30, and then the transition with the music at 4:15. chef's kiss.
Personally, I do not enjoy how the outside stands out so much amongst it's neighbors. It doesn't feel like it fits in among the community. But I do deeply appreciate how interesting of a concept the interior was on this one. Going monochromatic with the paint is something I would never do, but it was very cool to see (and totally makes sense) how the singular shade varies in color throughout the day to raise interest.

Infill tends to ignore it altogether or to mimic it is the dullest way possible. Something like this would be a fresh take. Though not in wood. We are much too wet for that much wood!

Thats because he didn’t really say anything of substance, very full of himself, I think. As another comment said, it’s a form of art, but not design.

Wow as long as the client is happy here that's really all that matters... but that blue staircase is really giving parking ramp. Also what child draws concrete floors? This was all very confusing.

Wow.. I really hated this! First time this channel has a house that I actually hate. Or, at least the parts they decided to show - which is just exterior, which I actually liked, and that horrific staircase that looks like it belongs in jail or maybe a crazy high school. Why show a house without showing a house? Not a single living space was shown besides that 1 bay window, no kitchen, no bedrooms or bathrooms. Just again and again and again that blue staircase and that wire mesh... ugly

True. It was mostly slow panning of dramatic angles and close-ups of details. Sunlight seemed more in service of dramatic shadows it might cast than of the people who might live there. Very little sense of living space. The narrator called San Francisco a city in love with itself. So. Here's an interior in love with its own images.

Can't have stairs with open risers - kittens can fall and break their neck. Also, the roof space needs to be pet proof. Finally, what about parking?
    Otherwise - it's beautiful.

But I pity the HOA Board that has to listen to the neighbors howl about that exterior. My community had to replace our old custom stop signs, and didn’t want to spend $12k to make the new ones custom (city only pays for standard ones), and people lost their sh*t. The amount of hate mail and threats of violence cycling around was mind-blowing. 🤯🤯🤯

An austere, neurotic and surreal childish nightmare. Interesting only behind binocular lenses. Definitely an exercise in postmodern excess and probably home to Patrick Bateman's cousin. Takes a lot of gall to build that where it is.

Agree with a lot of comments here: you wouldn't be able to live in it. I watched another video before this one and the light coming into the space makes it. You can see what's going on when there is light coming in. Skylight doesn't help as much as the architects think.

I don't feel the house is hidden at all. Perhaps if the architect kept the original facade paying homage to the history (born and raised in the SF Bay Area myself it makes me saddened) the interior would be more of a contrast. Too severe for my taste, but someone will find or has found it a sanctuary.
