I got my first 'proper' art supplies when I turned 18. I got a bit more money than I usually would for a birthday and I spent all of it in a giant professional art store in Berlin. It was the first time I could actually afford to buy anything there. I bought myself a set of Whitenights watercolours, proper paper my first nice brushes and some waterproof liners as well as a little desk easel. It was like heaven I spent my entire birthday in that shop♡ I used the supplies for years and loved them. Then my mother tipped her coffee over my paints. I tried to clean them as well as I could but they turned moldy. My mother was very sorry and gave me money to replace them. Since I had also had a bit of money saved up I combined the money and bought myself a travel schmincke horadam palette as well as some extra pans I squeezed in that I knew I would need. I use this palette to this day, daily. I have by now accumulated refill tubes for all the colours of course. I have also built up my coloured pencil collection over the years, pencil by pencil as well as a few pan pastels. Just a few days ago I finally got to try Holbein gouache for the first time. It is wonderfully intuitive. But I of course still love my comfort medium watercolour. I feel like I have to somewhat "master" a medium before I go on to focus and indulge in and on another.
Thank you for sharing, and I’m so happy to hear that you not only built your dream collection but also gained a deep understanding of your medium. ☺️ I can imagine how sorry your mom must have felt when she accidentally damaged your supplies, knowing how much they meant to you. It was really sweet of her to try and make things right. Have fun with Holbein! 💪
I so agree with you! There's certainly that feeling of being "re-inspired" from buying new supplies, but there are other ways to get inspired. I'm also guilty of buying supplies, dreaming big, and then being afraid to "waste" my precious supplies on things that aren't perfect - but I'm working on that. Like you said, we don't know how long we have to live. I love your mermaid, she is gorgeous, and so calming to watch and hear your thoughts ❤ would love to see how your art wall comes along! (If you'd want to share that)
I definitely needed to hear this, I have a problem where I buy art supplies, swatch them and don't really pick them up after. The No-Buy sounds like the perfect challenge for me, it didnt even occur to me before to set something like that for myself. On another note, your art is gorgeous, the way you control the brush to make such flowy lines makes my brain really happy. Thankyou so much for this video x
Ah I loove your painting! Your dynamic lines are so mesmerizing to look at 🥰 personally I felt that I don't need to buy more supplies when I figured out what colors I actually use But my paper addiction is still ongoing 😅 I just like painting on different papers and adjust my work to them 😊
Thank you so much, you're always so kind. That's great to hear! Finding your own palette definitely aligns with discovering your style. As for paper, well... I'm sure sooner or later you'll find a good use for your art. 💪
I search for videos about art subscription boxs; those are the best bet for people making art. Haul videos that are just showing viewers the stuff and not using IMO are just about creating envy. I’ve also noticed a lot of newer artists think there’s this one secret supply they need to paint or draw like the artists they like. Partly because people will be “I was using X wrong and when I started using Z my art got better” But they miss the part where you’re working at and improving your art. I will buy new stuff to try it out. Also, carbon/transfer paper won’t smudge when wet. It also is almost impossible to erase. I used to use it to transfer my linework, but it not erasing meant I had to start over if I didn’t like something and it always showed through transparent colors, ruining a delicate yellow or red 😢
Thank you for your comment. I never thought about the envy aspect. Maybe it relates to where each of us is in life right now. I can understand envy towards an expensive car, a career, or a designer bag, but luckily, art supplies are something most can afford sooner or later, even the more expensive ones. More than anything, if someone wants to make hauls, instead of buying huge, complete sets, it might be better to treat yourself to individual products. That way, the costs aren't so overwhelming, and over time, everyone can collect a range of art supplies that they know, like, and especially use. And yeah, the fear of missing out is real, especially when artists praise a certain product-you might get caught up in the feeling that a specific product will elevate your art. The good news is, I've seen some artists obsess over certain products, but I've never seen them actually making art with them. So... we should all follow our own paths and choose what suits us. That's a great idea with the transfer paper, although, as you said, it can be challenging if you make a mistake. It can sometimes get quite messy as well. I'm trying to use very hard pencils to preserve the lines and be less heavy-handed with the first layers of watercolor. That way, I can still preserve the sketch.
@@rampant.hare.illustrations I use a transfer paper brand called Saral; it comes in a few colors. I mostly used the red or blue. I use a good amount of those colors, so they blend in. But I’d run out and could only get black and that just wouldn’t lift. Now I use a light box and erasable colored pencils. I agree trying a few of a supply to get a feel for it is best. I bought a small set of alcohol markers, like 20 colors, yet in discord/reddits/etc people always want to buy or say they’re saving to buy the 200 or 300 marker set and they’ve never even used the markers before. Then get upset when their work doesn’t look like they expect it too. 🙄
This is so true, I enjoy watching product reviews and swatching videos, specially the last i find they can be very relaxing, but I try to find channels that make art with the product, or investigate the channel and check if they make actual art instead of being a "haul only" channel, if that is the case I won't subscribe. As you said, there is nothing wrong, it's just not my thing
Ваши иллюстрации очень вдохновляющие. Смотрю ваши видео с удовольствием❤ Спасибо

Thank you so much! ☺️ It's true, we often lose track of when we started giving so much importance to things that don't really matter…

Pretty! Why does she have a claw, is that part of the lore?😮
Haha! You mean her tail? 🤔😋
I'm in love with these shades. Keep on the good work!! ✨
