The most poetic audio hardware review award goes to you. Funny, to the point, educational and visually interesting ... bravo! I'd like to see some details on the machine like workflow, content organization and live/show style use. Thanks and MOAR please!
I bought one of these and could not be more satisfied. I love it. I'm not a performer, I just use it in the studio with Ableton Live and record my patterns as audio via an RME Babyface. It was like breathing life back into my drums... It actually changed the way I create music. Now I just convert everything to audio early on, even my VST sounds, and work with the clips in the arrangement view.
Nice review. You're good at this stuff. Also really like the tune in the background. Sadly it was not on your soundcloud. I wanted to hear it. It took me a while to fully become one with the Tempest as well but now I love it.
There's just something about your videos that I seriously enjoy. You're well-spoken, humorous, informative, and endearing with your passion for music. Subbed! Enjoying your content along with True Cuckoo, Ricky Tinez, Loopop, BoBeats, Gabe Miller Music, and Red Means Recording!
Very good and fair review, thanks. The video has a very high quality (both from a technical and from script and entertaining perspective). Seems you took a good portion of time into it.What I like most was the music in the beginning. Great ambient stuff.
I would like to hear what you think about elektron products. It was a tough choice between the tempest and the rytm but I went with the rytm $$$. As far as I'm aware the rytm is more of a live performance machine and not as difficult as the tempest to program on the fly.
I notice that you mentioned in one of you videos that you use the Tempest as the master clock to you DAW. Are you still able to record multiple drum tracks in your DAW. Still trying to figure this out.
I hook the Tempest up via USB, then I tell my DAW to accept external clock via MIDI. I’ll use the 6 separate analog outs from the Tempest into my DAW. There is no way to do the audio part across USB MIDI unfortunately. I hope I’ve explained this alright, I know the Tempest well, just ask me if you’re still on the fence.
I think I got you, I'm new to Tempest so bare with me. You're basically saying connect audio 1-6 to your audio interface, which of course works with you DAW and 1 is your Kick 2 Snare 3 Hats etc.?
One more quick questions, I'm see a lot of mix bag info on the 6 voice out, are they stereo out? Should I be using just 1/4 in TS or 1/4 TRS Y cable with two mono.?
THAT was a great review. Honest, nuanced, and yes, pretty funny at times! Thank you. What really amazed me was all that great music playing behind it. I wouldn't ever have guessed that such mellow music was done on the Tempest. Sounded great. I stuck with a fairly early OS update - after Playlists were implemented, and just around when all 32 pads were enabled. One limitation I ran into was the relatively small memory for saving user Projects. But I could definitely manage the memory better, and I think I'll upgrade and start a whole new Tempest Era - treat it like a new machine! Download some of those patches that won the contest for new sounds a few years back. And maybe even try to get that super mellow rainy day feel going that you did so well on the background music for this video. Never had a Tetra, but did have a Prophet 5 back in the day. So thanks again.
Dude your hilarious ! great overview. I have one, love it, but it is very time consuming to get it's rewards. Do you have any tracks or vids of it in use? Also I would like to join/start a user group to share patches. I have only one, but It sound really killer after many many hours to fine tune it.
Excellent description of the Tempest. You reap what you sow. The Tempest is a beast and will reward your true diligence Your Videos look so professional. If I may ask. What gear do you use to shoot them. Camera etc. By the way if you ever leave those glasses behind on a table. I'm taking them. So cool!! Keep being a Gentlemen Sir. I can tell by your voice and demeanor. Cheers.
Hey Dugiebrother! Thanks, I'm so glad you're enjoying the content. The Tempest review is kinda what got me first noticed here! Are you ready for the setup, it's a bit pricey...FIrst off I shoot 4K so here ya go: Cameras: A Camera: Sony a7rii with Sigma 18-35mm Lens (@ 35mm) B Camera: Sony RX10ii (@ 100mm) Lighting: Key Light: Aputure 120T + Light Dome Fill Light: Aputure Tri 8c Hair Light: Aputure 120d + Fresnel Spot Lights: 2X Came TV Boltzen 50w Capture: 2x Black Magic Video Assist 4K There's more, but that's the basics!
I love this instrument. I have it with me now during a 5 month vacation in Russia and Europe. It's awesome to have an analog drum machine and poly synth in one unit which fits in a briefcase. It's very fun to play and to write music on and fits right in with my other DSI gear.
Hey man, I'm bulding the ultimate 100% Hardware spaceship for my live performances and I am looking for a second drum synth to go with my RYTM MII. I got the Elektron because of how deep and versitile it is, and honesty, the tempest seems just as deep, if not deeper ! The video is from 2016 so I'm wondering what you think of it now ! If any Tempest users want to share their opinion, I'm interested !
If you really want to know..... I shoot in 4k 23.98 on the A7rii and record to the Blackmagic Video Assist 4k. Downscale to 1080p. Sigma 18-35 lens with the MC-11 EF-E adapter. Some might say overkill, but to hell with them lol.
Noir Et Blanc Vie Ohh really!? That's crazy. I was thinking about the TR8 but I'm good with Roland Cloud. But this Tempy I might be willing to save for. One more thing...I have a Monologue coming thru, does it seem like a little Moog? That's what I get from watching reviews.
Ok, so I think that’s a good question, the Monologues filter is a solid low pass filter, but it’s no Moog low pass, it’s thinner, but thicker than the Minilogue. Look at the Grandmother, for that sound. Though the monologue is fantastic for what it is.
Noir Et Blanc Vie That's funny because I returned the TR8S because I couldn't at least play keys from a midi keyboard and the price isn't worth it I think. So I was looking into other drum machines and then the new Drumbrute is announced when I already decided to pass on the Drumbrute.
It's a mixture, when I first started I liked doing things I owned because I knew them well...then when it came to something like the JDXI I bought it, but love it. The the Lifeforms I bought because I was excited about it when I saw it at NAMM last year...at this point companies are approaching me...BUT as always I keep my opinions 100% authentic. I'm a professional musician, I love synths, I'll only review something if it inspires me and I feel it can help my own creativity. (Long answer, sorry) new episode up tomorrow BTW, check back for it :)
Bought the Moog sub 37 down to the review you did way back. Its awesome. Thinking of a Tempest. Can you recommend any nice patches for the Tempest or sites to check.
Hmm, are you a member of the Dave Smith forums? If not I actually got some great patches from the community there. The Tempest hasn't lost it's value at all, great choice!

I use the Tempest combined with a midi-slaved 404sx to cover my sampling needs. I'd recommend checking out the Teenage Engineering OP1 if you want sample based portability beat making
i'm gonna grab an mpc 1000 or an 404 probably. I think the op1 is massively overpriced. Ill probably go with the 404 just for the fx even if the the 1000 is a more detailed sequencer. Its still crazy to me that theres not a good all in one box other than the new mpc touch portable. But thats a bit overkill and Im looking for an more hands on experience as I already have a laptop with a daw. Like if someone made an mpc 1000 with a built in synth and fx that would be dope.
it truly is what you make it, to me even with the flaws it is the most fun and unique instrument i have ever played or used. Im a jazz drummer and a producer and i feel like i can play it like a drumset with all the flavours and dynamics i can on kit/whilst at the same time arranging complex melodies and basslines. Whilst im having all that fun to most people i look like just another button pusher but at every gig a few people come up and ask me what it is that im doing and well...you dont have to twist my arm to talk synthesis
Ive had one a while and i never found it that difficult, i think thats because it has the easy to learn v difficult to master thing going on so you can get better at it at your own pace. It doesn't have a steep learning curve to get going and its amazing as a performance instrument. this is my desert island synth
I'm still on the fence about this thing. While I appreciate the fact you really have to work to create your own sounds I'm still attracted to the simplicity of the LM1 Drum Computer. I just wanted the Linn Drum sounds playing along with my Prophet. I didn't want to have to create patches on my drum machine.
Quentin Coleman if you check out the Kwesy album called Self Help Book every track I produced on their drums were done by the Tempest. Most of the time when I produce drums are always Tempest, and I 90% of the time every backing track on this channels has Tempest drums. GLITTERPRINCESS I agree, but people kept asking for longer videos so here we are lol. At this point it's kind of an inside joke for fans from way back..
Noir Et Blanc Vie yeah like i said its not a problem. tbh if the review was only a minute id be down here complaining that you didnt go into enough detail 😂
get one, and try for yourself. I ended up getting an elektorn before I got this, and the demos online DO NOT DO IT JUSTICE, so its probably the same with the tempest. This is infact the best tempest demo I have seen because he is doing more than making dubstep or techno. I'd say if you don't like it return it and get your money back. I may invest in one after an ob-6 or nord because I like my elektron rytm A LOT more than I thought I would. I've learned for these items you have to try before you buy or by and return. This is a synth and a drum machine and rytm isj ust a drum machine, but imo this is not a bad deal. You get a 6 voice synth and drum machine with parts in it from the og mpc guy. Try it for you and if you like it and how it sounds it is good.
sheatheman the synth engine they have for making a synth is like a joke imo, but the drum synth engines are fantastic. The synth engine do the tempest definitely seems a lot more diverse and usable
I loved mine but sold it in the end, but not because of bugs I sold it because I wanted something with built in delay, reverb & th eability to load samples and so bought an Elektron Analog RYTM.
The RYTM? Its the best drum machine Ive ever owned. But its much more than that, the ability to do synthesis with single cycle waveforms and the perf mode make it an amazingly creative box with excellent performance options..
When I was at DSI last week I talked to the main programmer on the Tempest and we will most likely get together soon and do a thorough look at the Tempest, a deep dive for Tempest owners. When I was at DSI the things he showed me were very impressive!
I look forward to your future viddies ! Number of tracks, track length or step amount per track, parameter locks (if possible) and total amount of the sequencer's total volume would be helpful info, thanks !
I totally used to feel this way, like I said I didn’t use it for an entire year after I bought it, just felt that unusable. I eventually realized the potential, took actual practice so I don’t blame you for feeling this way. I’m definitely open to a difference in opinion (and 2014 Noir totally agrees hehe)
@@NoirEtBlancVie I wanted one of these for the longest because it was Roger Linn affiliated and I hoped that maybe they would patch in sampling capability somehow, but they never did. All good tho. I would cop if I could find one for at or around $1000. Waiting on that SP 2400.
Noir Et Blanc Vie Isla Instruments. They have quite a few vids on youtube about it. looks like it’s gonna be dope! Slated for release in Jan of 2020. Can sample in 12-bit and 24-bit.

Where in a mixer should the Tempest plug into? A channel...or Tape In ? And can you color the Tape In with reverb, if so ? Thanks.

Hi! Very nice reviews and a cool personality. Extremely enjoyable to watch. Would you consider reviewing the Elektron Analog Keys?
I love this drum machine, though is there no way to turn the swing down to zero?

When I was at DSI last week I talked to the main programmer on the Tempest and we will most likely get together soon and do a thorough look at the Tempest, a deep dive for Tempest owners. When I was at DSI the things he showed me were very impressive!
I look forward to your future viddies ! Number of tracks, track length or step amount per track, parameter locks (if possible) and total amount of the sequencer's total volume would be helpful info, thanks !
that hammer stressed me out man.
you look like a video game character from the early 2000's/90's
Hehe I love this comment!
@@NoirEtBlancVie seriously you look like a selectable character out of jet set radio future lmao which has an amazing ost if you haven't heard it
awful usability. This machine is obsolete
No sampler, no thanks.
I can understand that POV, I definitely felt like that for quite a while. Would be nice to have for sure.
@@NoirEtBlancVie I wanted one of these for the longest because it was Roger Linn affiliated and I hoped that maybe they would patch in sampling capability somehow, but they never did. All good tho. I would cop if I could find one for at or around $1000. Waiting on that SP 2400.
Whoa, who is making this SP 2400?
Noir Et Blanc Vie Isla Instruments. They have quite a few vids on youtube about it. looks like it’s gonna be dope! Slated for release in Jan of 2020. Can sample in 12-bit and 24-bit.
Wow, what an age we live in!
