    In this video, electronic musician and Dubspot instructor James Bernard takes a deeper look at the Tempest, an innovative analog drum machine and synthesizer from electronic musical instruments design giants Dave Smith Instruments and Roger Linn Design.
    He first breaks down the drum machine and explains how it lets you create and manipulate beats and sounds in real time, demonstrating various ways you can utilize the well-thought-out pad bank for a dynamic live performance: the Tempest has sixteen pressure- and velocity-sensitive pads to which you can assign thirty-two unique drum sounds with different settings for each.
    Bernard also explains the synthesis aspect and showcases some of the rich sounds you'll find in the Tempest, essentially a six-voice analog synthesizer with four oscillators per voice, as well as many original effects devices. The Tempest is not your average drum machine or synthesizer: whether in the studio or in a live performance environment, the sonic possibilities with this machine are boundless.

    Had one of these since they came out. It's not a piece of software that can be custom configured to do anything, anytime. You have to put some time into learning the established workflow, but the reward is worth it. Don't believe everything you read from a few discontented individuals on the DSI forums who want this to function like an 808/909, MachineDrum, GenoQs, super device. It is what it is, and that's a very capable analog drum machine with clever performance functions. Like it or move on.

    you know,after watching a bunch of tempest videos in preparation for buying a one, i wasnt at all confident in my ability to master such a complicated beast--well here i am with my new tempest and 24 hours in, i pretty much have most of it under my belt--roger's quick start video helped greatly, as this one does also...... love my tempest--awesome and well worth the money!!!

    Click always routes out main output AFAIK so you could assign the pad groups to output on any pair of the 6 remaining outs to get a full stereo mix.

    "Too much talking"? It's essentially a tutorial, dude. The Tempest is one of the greatest rhythm machine's ever created, it's a total game changer. Unfortunately it's expensive, and very deep with a steep learning curve. The one who commits to learning it reaps the rewards.

    I just looked into the prices of Dub Spot courses.
    very not cheap.
    I would rather buy the gear and figure it out myself. Not paying over ten grand to learn Ableton and stuff. Nice idea if you can afford it but not my deal, that's my situation.
    Wish I could get some schooling. I am sure it would help

    can any tempest user help? when i play midi notes from tempest to dsi tetra i am encountering this problem: when i play the notes live from the 16 tunings i can play continuous notes but when I record them they sound short when played back. i tried sustain, i cleared choke parameters, checked settings on DSI Tetra but I assume it is a record pad hold setting that i cannot find. any ideas?

    Hi, I've just bought a tempest and when I use extra voice outs, other than the main L&R outs, I notice there is some sort of polyphony stealing going on, i.e. some sounds being cut short or not playing at all, do you know why this might be? Any help would be much appreciated, Ian

      Assign individual voices, otherwise the Tempest will automate the process which can result in drops.

    • @jaycee713
      @jaycee713 4 роки тому

      Don Dorward I wouldn’t say Spark sucks. I got a Tempest about 6-7 months after it came out, and it’s been my favorite piece of hardware. I use the Spark app on my iPad, and it’s one of my favorite synth apps. To me they are pretty similar, and Spark actually fills in on the sample aspect where the Tempest falls short. The programming aspect is actually pretty similar, and I love how Spark has a full mixer and FX section for filling out its sounds and work flow. Together they make a pretty good team! I could see running the software version on a laptop, in tandem, and probably with more stability and MIDI capability than the iPad version.

    • @brianf.burkejr.1488
      @brianf.burkejr.1488 9 років тому

      It is a synthesizer, not a ROMPLER. The digital oscillators can and do hold sampled drum waveforms. If you have one wave form and a machine of this power why would you need samples, oh BTW it has 540 different wave forms including 808; 909; Lin Drum; and real"sampled" drum waves. So yes there are over 900 samples, there is a list in the instruction manual and yes they are listed as "SAMPLES"

    A little disappointed you opted for a more "traditional" drum pad layout. The default pad layout really seems more geared towards playing the tempest as an instrument. I think this is one of the more brilliant things Roger brought to the machine.

    Unfortunately, those of us that bought this thing a year and a half ago are still stuck with a buggy beatbox that crashes constantly, still lacks major features that were promised on a piece of paper when it was released, and a company that's already moved on to their next device, the Prophet 12, before the Tempest is even finished or fixed.
