Did you mean the third problem? Well, since the upper term (the numerator) has the same variable x, you could add them together. Think of it as 3 apples and 2 apples, that's the same as 3x+2x, which equals 5x (or 5 apples). When 5x is divided by 2x, the two x's cancel out because the operation is division, leaving us with 5/2, or 2.5. Another method is to split the term above the dividing line apart, into 2x/2x +3x/2x. We have distribute (or throw in) the division into both part of the addition. We would not have to do this if it were with multiplication, for example (8x × 4x)/4x (8x times 4x, all divided by 4x, the parenthesis or round brackets are optional). The result of this would just be 8x as the two 4x's cancel each other out. Also if x were multiplied by itself, we'd have x^2 (or x squared).
