Buddy Rich is one of those people , like Elvis, The Beatles, Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee, who you wish could have been around forever, because they were just so good and brilliant in their field.. You just didn't want their careers, to come to an end.
Yes Roy every time I hear Buddy no matter what year what time and where ever I hear the percussion excitement that only Buddy could mix up. To this date no comes close to our Buddy.
Does anyone know what year this was? I'm guessing it was very close to the end of his life. On this video, Buddy doesn't sound anything like the drummer I've watched and worshipped for twenty years. In fact, the first time I've ever seen Buddy mess up was on this video at 1:10. It really shocked me. I've never seen Buddy make a mistake in my life. I think this video is valuable because it's the only example I've ever heard of Buddy not sounding in tip-top shape. He's slower, he doesn't move around the drums (seemingly because he can't) and he actually gets snagged on a figure. I couldn't believe it. Buddy is one of my favorite musicians and drummers of all time and I will be doing my best to honor him and his level until the day I die. I suppose it's good to see a video like this to remind us that Buddy, like every human, grows old. I do wonder how long he was performing after this concert.
The sound is very different to most recordings of BR BB because some-one had the great idea of using new and largely untested recording techniques to capture a true sense of being at a concert...an early immersive, surround sound idea. It may have worked...the full video exists somewhere with great technical information. I think the experience angered Buddy.
True, they were also made for small frame people. The bass drum on my friends drum set back in the 60's was not any bigger around than a hubcap! But they sounded great!
Both Slingerland and Ludwig made excellent drums. Buddy played both but I think his snare sounds very dull and muffled here. It really sounds like garbage. Of course, Buddy makes any drum playable but that snare is very dull sounding. I don't understand. What snare was he using, Ludwig, Fibes, or Slingerland?
@@dylangatenby9928 To my ears, this recording sounds like the bass drum was close miced, but the rest of the kit was just being picked up by overheads/room mics. Not sure though.
Dylan Gatenby That snare is the old slingerland radio king he was using in Dorsey band. There are many sound clips of him playing that snare but yeah on this one it’s especially low pitched I think. The clips from disney might be same kinda sound too.
I feel the same way about a lot of musicians. Miles, Eddie Van Halen, Morrissey, and a lot of rock and jazz musicians I've met in real life were very bitchy. But I guess it's make sense. This world chews up celebrities, and spits them out.

Well said.
Could not have said it better
Yep one offs and masters at their craft ;-)

This was 1985, he passed in April of '87.
@@JohnnyTorontoEh Thanks Johnny. I'm not sure what to make of this all-will have to give the video another watch.

Buddy's Slingerlands always had a warmer sound than his Ludwigs and Rogers.

Can somebody tell me when the Slingerland drum co. went out of business?

@@totigerus It's very poor sounding whatever the case may be.
this bites, can't hear buddy over that too loud orchestra.
ha
Buddy's snare sounds very dull and muffled in this concert. Not sure if he was playing Ludwig or Slingerland. Definitely not one of his best snares.

@@MrCrazyGasMaskMan sorry, no it isn't--made by Joe MacSweeny of Eames Drums. That original Slingerland was long gone.
Buddy is one guy I hate to love, he was such a flaming douchebag but he could back it up with actually being miles ahead of everyone else in the room
He demanded perfection from his band,
however the musicians were only human......

I prefer Neil's tribute solo lol
Lame.
