Great instructions and thanks for the prompt to get me trying this again. I had some iffy collections last year. My slight modification is that I used a cedar board of width 7 1/4". I ripped a 2" strip off the top of that and so was able to get a side and bottom piece from each 10" length. $42 for a 6' cedar board of that length though, yikes! Quite a difference from your costs 3 years ago. Thanks!
If you have 2 - 10" (in) board for the bottom slats and your box is 11"x10" wouldn't it be easier to put the slats on the 10" length instead of trying to put it inside the 11" length???
Hey Lukas! Sorry for the delayed response here. The other colors are ok, so long as they don’t cover more area than the white. In general, the white is best! Sometime gray can indicate that your box was left too long to gather the IMO. The IMO moved in, grew, then began to sporulate resulting in the tips of the white fungus looking gray! Most likely you had a good collection.
You should get a very very very fine mesh cloth. Screen door fiberglass can be chewed through.. I would not only because you need a fine mesh screen to keep a rat or mouse from nibbling or licking the rice and introducing vermin based bacteria to the rice
I have been in my KNF journey for quite some time! I don’t post EVER and I regret that. Winter is a more appropriate time to work on the projects regarding time availability!
@@katesnaturalfarm6870 Awesome!! I'm planning on starting physically when it warms up. *Apparently* collecting IMO1 is not likely during the very cold months 😂.
@@rrittenhouse This is true! It's difficult to cultivate the growth on a substrate. However, Chris Trump recently collected some soil from under the snow in Colorado and brought it back to a lab to cultivate in the winter time!
@@katesnaturalfarm6870 That dude is so brilliant. Thank you for that. Do you know where you saw or read that at? Finding info of his these days is complicated. I see him on future cannabis project YT from time to time.
@@rrittenhouse I got lucky and collected IMO this year in the cold snowy winter. My leaf mold pile had some leaves with white fungus on them so I placed them directly on the rice. First attempt for fun but it worked ok actually and I had white fungus growth I made IMO 2 with the brown sugar so it'll keep until Spring. I'll probably use this one to add to compost tea to inoculate my biochar in early Spring.
If you wanna make one for me. Ill gladly take it, but I am in Canada (Toronto). But I would rather it done properly by someone who understands why I need it, hahaha. I personally dont know anyone who can make me one. Let me know and I can contact you guys directly. Im only making small batches at moment, and I have to use a glass jar, it has worked out well. But not ideal.
I used pine 1x4 and lindseed oil to preserve the pine. Pine has capilary action and the ends will soak up moisture
Great idea

Thank you! I'm going tot try to make a new video each week.
Nice video. I have just recently started experimenting with KNF and look forward to more videos
Awesome channel. Great video :)
Thank you so much!
It's a pretty box but how do you use it, and why not just do the rice water. Thanks in advance
Thanks you so much
Great video.
Thank you! Please keep a look out for more videos.
What size Brad nails?
You mentioned you might make some for purchase. Are you doing this?
Did you find one yet?

Probably!
Did I miss it? Did he ever address why he's using cedar?
Cedar is long lasting wood and resistant to rot.
i also thought that i missed the reason to use cedar.
He actually said it.

Besides white, I so had gray and yellow mycelium growing inside.
are those bad or good ones?

Can I just wrap some rice in screen and throw it in the dirt to collect microbes
You can just make a pile - but it will be subject to vermin easily

So, did you ever start your knf journey?

Go check out CGNF Hawaii (Google search) they have a basket for sale you can buy!
@@katesnaturalfarm6870 Oh nice, I see it. I assume its a bamboo basket ? I was thinking about that actually. Great Idea
How much rice fits in one? 1 or 2 cups I'm guessing?
This particular box fits around 4-5 cups
I need a two box’s
I can make them and send them to you!
@@katesnaturalfarm6870 i need 5 🥲
If you guys need them for the spring, let me know on Instagram @katesnaturalfarm and we’ll coordinate it!
Could you use cardboard for a temporary, compostable box
Moisture is your enemy in IMO collection- cardboard will fail
@@ballaghbotanicals thanks for the info!
its definetely worth trying
It would be consumed if you found a good culture to let it sit on!
Woodglut instructions is nice for that.
