For those interested ...."Before Christ" is an "hardcore gameplay mode", since the player has to return to the beginning of the level after the player character has died, as opposed to continuing from the same spot in the regular mode.
The CPC version has scrolling AND music which is rare but really comes from the "looked at the arcade game a couple of times, I can do it" school of arcade conversions.
if the Amiga Side Arms game was a proper port using Amiga hardware not a lazy Atari ST port it possible would eat the PC Engine/TurboGrafx port (version) for breakfast, lunch, dinner
I have the PCE cd version. Interesting shooter. By the looks of the DOS port it was either running too fast or they made it with the difficulty turned up to 11.
Now that I've noticed that it's the spiritual predecessor to Forgotten Worlds, I'm realizing its importance. Definitely all the three versions on PC-Engine are must-have.
Reportedly _Section Z_ , _Side Arms_ , and _Forgotten Worlds_ are all set in the same timeline/continuity (with this particular game serving as the "middle" chapter).
ZX Spectrum version looks like completely different game. It has no similarity with original arcade at all...aside from hero with a jetpack. By the way - it has really spooky-looking boss. It just can give you a nightmares. 9:02 In my opinion - PC Engine/Turbo graphx versions is the best.
I think I know which port is the worst, it's the MS-DOS version. However, I think the best versions will have to be the 3 PC-Engine releases. One for the PC-Engine, and two for the PC-Engine CD!
Indeed such a lazy effort. By the way there are only 2 different version ("before Christ" Is a gameplay option) of the game for the Nec console ...older one on cart newer on CD-Rom with upgraded music
Arcade (Japan, World): The original version, coop (i guees) and without comments. Commodore 64: Sounds good for 3 channel voices, the graphics are okay and a decent port. Amstrad CPC: The scroll and sound is very rare... with borders ZX Spectrum: Good limitations, but, the sounds sound like we live in ohio PC DOS/MS DOS: Could be better in VGA colors and Soundblaster 16 music Amiga: Sounds better than Commodore 64, worst scroll and better colors! Atari ST: Okay, is literally the same as Amiga, with another chip sound PC Engine: The better version for the Arcade Edition! PC Engine CD: Now, with FM sound effects and better music! PC Engine CD (Again): Is literally bad and good than the other version. My favorites: Arcade/PCE CD, PCE (Could be better on SNES, Genesis or PS1)
C64- far and away from the best c64 horizontal shooters, but at least it plays smoothly. CPC- an abomination, they should have used much smaller playfield size to make it playable. MS-Dos - is it uglier than ZX? Amiga, ST - disappointing, they are capable of much better ports. PC Engine - the only one that actually resembles the arcade.
1. PC-engine 2. Arcade 3. Turbograftx 4. Computers puke

What a nice surprise to open youtube to find a new Retrosutra video. THANKS!
Those words mean a lot to me, thank you.

I remember playing it once in '88 at an arcade
Both PC-Engine versions are great, the rest are hooooorrrrrrrible, even the 16 bits ones hahahahah.

@@jasonlee7816Yeah, but not the CD one

I think it's the turbografx-16 version. It's probably better than the arcade version, in my opinion.
TurboGrafx CD is better not the TG version

Not often you see a CPC game pretty smooth scrolling and in-game music

Disappointing 16-bit versions

De acuerdo con tu análisis. Solo se salvan de la hoguera los ports de PC Engine. Muchas gracias por tu comentario.
