That's the Firebird horn. A trumpet that is designed like a trombone but with only 4 slide positions. I had the rare opportunity to play one of these. Wild!!! And way over priced! But really cool.

This era of Maynard with his band was the best. His band was killer and the trumpet section was stellar. Peter Erskine on the drums, this was the all-star team of music.

This was probably my favorite MF song as a kid. I practiced it, practiced, practiced. I could never hit high notes like Maynard. Me and my trumpet playing friends idolized him. I got to where I could play E above High C for a little bit which is enough to play the theme of this song. Even that would wear my lip out after a while. He is playing so much higher than that here, it's ridunculous.

  • @mikebridges7294

I was able to see Maynard and even Buddy Rich in '81 at the Uni I attended. We had some multi-talented trumpet players in HS and Uni and, Maynard influenced them all, especially those who could make those horns scream lol. In HS, my Jr. year our Band Director bought a valve trombone (I played E flat horn in JH and Baritone in HS and Uni and, played Treble Cleft. I took the trombone music and practiced until I could transpose Treble to Bass Cleft) because he wanted me in the Stage Band. I did same in Uni. I loved playing this type of music.

Even after all these years I love this tune. I know, I know...Maynard's commercial stuff....bla...bla...bla. So what. It's a great programatic piece of music, and Maynard poured his heart into it. Hey ffreguson1975...I'm not ashamed to admit that Maynard is my hero, too! As MFhorn13 said...Never before...Never since. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of TRULY amazing cats out there that I love, but Maynard is one of the true trumpet gods.

Thanks for that clip. I miss the old style talk shows like Mike Douglas. I doubt you would see an instrumental band on any talk show now. Maynard was awesome. Those guys in his band were the best and the brightest of musicians... musical nerds. I was a kid in marching band at the time of this and all my instructors worshipped at the feet of MF. I personally liked Herb Alpert and Chuck Mangione more but I always appreciated Maynard and even more after I learned how gracious and giving he was.

Bill Chase was influenced by Maynard, Bill tried to mimic MF in every way possible, just look at pics and the videos, they DID look a lot alike...can you blame him though? The differences were Bill was a lead player, the best ever INMHO, MF was an out front soloist, never a lead player (even on Kenton's band he played 5th and fly lead 8VA), MF played higher than most but Bill topped everybody for endurance...especially on the CHASE band...Bill was at his best up to G's and A's but it was non stop pounding...both Chase and MF had a charisma and excitement not seen in today's trumpet players

Hadn't seen him play his banana slide trumpet before. Great piece from my trumpet idol for the past 50 yrs and more. Douglas did have some good music on his show, which Dr Phil counters with many negative "vibes".

That is not a flugel horn. It is a Firebird slide trumpet invented by Maynard.
