He's a rapper. He's always been a rapper. He's a poet and a deep thinker. And he's an idol. These things aren't mutually exclusive. And the video is perfectly in sync with the lyrics. There is nothing random in it.

I am envious of your experience, that this song is how you get to meet RM for the first time. Not to invalidate other experiences, but I cant imagine how refreshing it would feel to hear this for the first time with no context as to who RM is and what he may be talking about. I'm enjoying these so much!

RM was in fact a rapper first. He was a big name in the underground rap scene in South Korea which is the reason he was the first member signed to BTS by Big Hit Entertainment, which is now HYBE/Big Hit. BTS was originally conceptualized as a hip hop group and the first two members signed were rappers. The third number was signed as a hip hop dancer and learned to rap as a trainee.
BTS consists of three rappers and four vocalists.

Namjoon also known as RM of BTS has just dropped his first Album, Indigo. Wildflower is the lead single. It is the story of his personal journey over the past 4 years. The visuals represent the highs and lows he experienced during that time. So in the fields of flowers he's talking about his hopes and then when it turns barren and stormy he is talking about how fame turned out to be something he didn't expect. He is longing to return to his roots so that he can be himself, instead of just an idol. You are correct, Namjoon started his career as a Rapper, inspired by Nas and Eminem and initially started Rapping in the Korean Underground about 15yrs ago. He auditioned for a small co, BigHit, and became an idol, the first member of BTS. He is an Idol, but he has continued to rap, BTS has 7 members and 3 are rappers. He is the leader of BTS, writes many of their lyrics and is well known for this exceptional talent.. Yougeen is a rock singer, tje vocalist from Cherry Filter a well known group in Korea, she was splendid on this song. Loved your reaction and so glad you enjoyed it. You will surely have other Army, the name for fans of BTS who will be happy to watch your reaction and suggest songs and other videos to watch! Great job!
Thank you for the clarification! It's fixed!

RM started as a poet, and then a rapper, then an IDOL. He was an amateur underground rapper, then he signed with Big Hit, becamse a trainee, then debuted in 2013 in South Korea as the leader of BTS, as a Hip Hop Idol group. RM is an amazing artist. BTS are all very talented artists. RM dropped his solo album recently, so I recommend that, and I can link you a Tiny Desk concert of his.

well i must applaud your observation skills because RM is in fact an idol. he's the leader and one of the 3 rappers of BTS, which ofc is an idol group
the mv actually does match the lyrics of the song. in short, RM talks about his struggles to deal with BTS' insane level of fame that has obviously many dark sides to it and expresses his desire for a normal peaceful grounded life.
the fame -> fireworks; the struggles -> the storm; the peace -> the flowerfield
also fun fact, firework in korean can be translated into "fire flower", so "flowerwork" is a wordplay on that

  • @ttucker330
    @ttucker330 2 роки тому +42

Initially BTS was going to be a hip hop group. RM was the first member as other rappers were being auditioned however at some point the CEO changed routes and decided to turn them into an idol group. RM had to make a decision to continue on despite the change in direction. He and the other two rappers in the group struggled and received backlash from both sides - the underground rappers called them sellouts and the big three kpop companies that monopolized the industry at that time did everything in their power to keep them down since they saw them as a threat. They wrote their own lyrics and rapped about their own experiences and that wasn't the norm for kpop rappers then. There are some now but again not the norm. BTS is a true underdog story as they had to fight for every bit of their success. The most wonderful part is they've stayed humble, down to earth guys who really value their fanbase. One of the reasons the fans are so loyal. Would love to see you react to some of their more rap heavy tracks. All the hate made for some really good diss tracks lol! Their song 'hip hop lover' gives you an idea of their rap influences. And their song 'born singer' (their version based off J Coles 'born sinner') is another good intro to the rappers. Outro Tear and Cypers 1-4 are also great. 💜

I think the nice thing about what the rappers of BTS have done all these years is that theyve blurred the lines between idol and rapper. It doesn’t always have to be black and white because we all know that they are rappers to the core and that idols can still be considered rappers one and the same 😊 They can’t always be satisfied as underground rappers because then, how will people be able to hear what they have to say right? Very important messages in their music

  • @ZariDV

It's interesting seeing someone be introduced to RM through this particular song since, in some ways, it's much softer than what he's known for. He started out with such an aggressive style and sort of mellowed out his style as he matured and settled into himself over time. A significant amount of this song's power comes from the context of who he is, what his journey has been and what he's been through as a person/leader/group member/rapper. It's interesting seeing how others may view this video and lyrics when you strip all of that away. It's awesome that you could go into it fresh and still enjoy it anyways. The initial confusion that you had about trying to pin down if RM was an idol or a rapper was something he struggled with a lot for years. He had moments where he would come to a conclusion on how he wanted to view himself or treat with the balance, then he'd muse about it more. But that's typical for him. He's fairly introspective and is likely to mull over ideas even after he lands on an answer. It's a trait that causes him unnecessary stress but it also makes for great music and discussions.

RM is the leader and one of the 3 rappers of BTS. While BTS is an idol group they are far more than just that. They started off in 2013 as a hip hop group and they have always been heavily involved in writing/producing/composing their own music. Two of the members were underground rappers from about age 13 prior to joining BTS (RM and Suga/AgustD) RM just released his first official solo album. He has two mix tapes as well.

I'm late to this video and I know msot of your questions have been answered by now but I just want to share this:
The thing about RM is he is very artistic with everything he does. He was a poet before anything else, so if you take everything produced by him at face value you will miss out on a LOT. The lyrics, the MV, the album cover-- all of it has meaning for a greater message. It's why he's my favorite in BTS and one of my favorite rappers IN GENERAL. He's also inspired by Nas and JCole my 2 favorite rappers of all time. So I implore you whenever you listen to or see something related to RM you gotta put that thinking cap on. He really doesn't fit into this generation tbh his mind is just on another level! His lyricism is fucking amazing too, it sucks we don't speak Korean because we MISS a lot of his wordplay. There are explanation videos out there tho to help bridge the gap.
He's also a big reason for BTS' success. KPOP is known for just being attractive and dancing; they normally have everything written for them. BTS on the other hand was different, because they had RM as the leader who was heavily inspired by Rap and Hip Hop. As well as Bang PD, the director of BigHit. They believe in music that has a message, because of this ALL of BTS' songs are written by the members. RM and Suga being the main producers and songwriters, but each member has written their own songs that were featured on albums as well. RM and Suga drilled into the other members' heads how important it was to create and produce your own music, so because of them BTS' music is much more authentic than most other kpop groups out there. They also ALWAYS pay homage to the black music and artists that inspire them in their songs, albums, and even during concerts and documentaries. I cant even consider BTS kpop because of how different they are and all the genres they cover in their music. They started as a Hip Hop group so their first 2 albums are completely hip hop. Nowadays they make ALL genres: Hip Hop, Rap, R&B (check out music by V), Pop, Ballads, House/EDM, etc.

RM is a very, very interesting man. He is the beginning of BTS because his talent of an underground rapper was noticed and the CEO of BigHit really wanted to debut him, so he built a hip hop group around him which now encompasses many genres, BTS. He has a genius IQ and is famous for his lyricism and insane wordplay. He has over 200 copyright credits to his name. This MV actually represents him really well. He loves nature and art, so his desire to be like a wild flower which endures and blooms rather than fireworks which burn out very quickly is a desire for a long lasting career and legacy. The whole album he just released is superb. I highly recommend it. The lyrics and the music are to die for. All the guys from BTS are powerhouses on their own, and now when they are releasing solo music they have more chances to show their individual colours. RM is like chef's kiss. Check out his Still Life from this album which just came out, it's a Collab with Anderson Paak.

"I do wish me a lovely night" has a meaning. First, he's alone, he has nobody else to wish him good night. And second, for many years, he had a persistent blues-feeling inside of him (probably because of the typhoon his life+the other members of BTS was, as he is the leader and in charge of the band in a way).
He has many lyrics where he mentions not wanting to wake up, not finding meaning in life (but not being suicidal, he mentions this as well, he would never put an end to his own life, whereas other member - other rapper- has wanted that, expressly), so this line is powerful as he is saying he doesn't feel that way anymore (he said something similar in a song they released in June all together, called For Youth). ^^
Thanks for a lovely reaction. This song is really meaningful, he only writes what's inside of him and releases the song when he's solved those feelings. He sets them free, that's why his album Indigo (where this song functions as title track with Still Life) is called "archive of my twenties" (in international terms he's 28, but in Korea he's 29, and as soon as January comes, he'll be considered 30, even though his birthday is in September... yeah, a bit complicated, but hey! in the news they said SK is gonna get rid of that, finally)
PS. "Where you go, where's your soul, where's your dream?" references not only some of BTS lyrics, but a solo song of his (as BTS, not RM) called Persona. I think you'll like it :)

"I do wish me a Lovely night". He is exhausted from being in BTS for 10 years. He didn't know his fame would become flames and consume his mind and body and soul. The group decided to go on a break. They all are burned out. Plus they all have to serve in the military now. It's a government requirement. So they've all been working on solo albums. The end scene. He finally is resting in a bed of purple and indigo flowers. He is in nature one of his favorite things. He is at peace. He is calm. His brain is on pause. His dual mask is off. He is just Namjoon. Not RM the leader of the biggest most famous group BTS. You have to realize they work every day. Well, 360 days a year.
No days off. No vacations. No family. No friends. They didn't just work 40 Hours a week. They worked 10 to 12 Hours 7 days a week. They finally did get Christmas off in 2020. They've had a few other breaks. Not many. An interesting trivia. Those fireworks were real. No CGI.
Special Korean fireworks. RM insisted on it! And yes, RM picked the perfect singer for those haunting swells of lyrics and high notes. This is RM's best work to date! I hope he wins every award next year for it and his masterful album, "Indigo"!

I appreciate the time you put into RM's album. You're putting thought and putting intelligence into the lyrics and all the meaning behind his songs. there are many reactors that just take it for face value and don't try to understand the meaning behind the songs and make comments like "i liked his shirt" and then end the video. I do however think you stumbled upon this video too early in your journey into RM. I think after you listen to the rest of his album, and watch the introduction video to BTS and learn where they came from and the struggles they faced to get to where they are, you'll have a deeper appreciation for this video. I'm a new fan myself (just a few months), but i took a deep dive into BTS. This video wrecked me. No song has ever done that to me before. You mentioned you didn't really understand how the video matched the song, but in my opinion, the video brought out and enhanced the emotions of the lyrics and what Namjoon was going through spectacularly. The fireworks (being loud and bright) represent his life as RM of bts and the fame. The storm represents his frustration and feeling lost. Being in the field of nameless flowers is him looking and longing for inner peace as himself (Namjoon). He mentioned in Festa 2022 that they (bts) knows that they can't always be the biggest band. That one day they will no longer be top dogs. but they are not afraid of the fall, they just ask for a graceful landing. So his lyrics "even before the start, i yearned for a beautiful fall", he was referring to their fall from the top, not the season. This was so humbling. And knowing that he's about to enlist in the military and hearing the lyrics "i'll be back someday" hurt. I think there's a double meaning to that line. One would be coming back from military and the other meaning he will either find his passion for this life (the passion for making music or being an idol) again or that he will be back in that barren field as a regular person. After learning about RM, you can share those emotions with him that he portrayed in this music video. I just ask that you revisit this video after you go down the rabbit hole of bts. Cheers!

RM was an underground rapper who went by Rapmonster, but he's changed so RM is now Real Me.
He's the leader of BTS the biggest group in the world right now, his responsibilities are immense as he not only has to look out for himself and the other 6 members but has to deal with everything as he's the front man.
This album is a swan song of sorts because he'll be entering military service for 18 months at the height of his career.
They will all return in 2025 but no one knows how thing will go but they have a billion member fandom so I think they will do well?

Subscribed! Dedicated ARMY here. I loved how respectful you were during the reaction. I could tell you were really listening to the song with an open mind despite not knowing what to expect when you hit play. I'll be binging your BTS reactions to date so I'll see you in the comments!
And it's funny that you talked about the whole rapper vs idol conundrum because this is something that RM and Suga (one of the other rappers in BTS) struggled with for a long time in the early days of BTS. They received so much hate and abuse for going from underground to idol group, as it was seen as selling out and losing their artistic integrity. As you can see from the lyrics of this single video, they haven't lost a single gram of their artistic integrity. 💜

RM would probably take your comment about looking like an idol as a high praise :) When he started in a idol group he was bullied not looking enough like an idol, but looking too much like a rapper.. That he was, and is, even if he is also an idol. 💜
What ever he is outwardly, when ever, rap is what made him a musician and a lyricist. 💜

To me, he’s a poet, who expresses his poetry through rapping and through music, who became a leader of BTS and continues to search for poetry with the group and individually. I believe he likes Nas. The album covers his twenties, and he was (is) BTS, so I guess the Mr would show him as that…?

RM is a rapper and is an idol at the same time. BTS has 3 rappers and 4 vocalist. The majoriity of their songs have rap and vocals in them. BTS isn''t just pop, whn hey debuted they were more hip hop/rap and have evolved to who they are today. RM was a big factor in their growth, he wrote or contributed to many of their songs. RM and Suga (one of the other rappers) have the most writing and producing credits in BTS, but all members have written songs that have been on BTS albums.
If you enjoyed this song, and you seemed to check out more BTS. Also, this song is from RM's album Indigo, which just came out.

Namjoon has just released his new solo album ‘Indigo’ to check out including his Tiny desk concert. He also has his solo ‘Joke’ & more 🙌🏼
I would also recommend Sugas solos aka Agust-D. He is one of the rappers from BTS. Music videos ‘Daechwita’ & ‘Agust D’ .
Also J-Hope. His solos ‘Arson’ & ‘More’ 🙏🏼
By the way there is so much to see from BTS. They are so talented in so many ways and have many styles it really is a rabbit hole.
I would say to watch their live performances aswell as their Music Videos. A recent live performance is MIC DROP & RUN live in Busan I would recommend 🙏🏼🙏🏼

RM is a rapper who turned into an Idol in the biggest group ever. Do you and Joke from his RM mixtape are hard, then Seoul is a great soft one from his Mono mixtape. RM is the leader on BTS which is a idol group.
BTS has 3 rappers and 4-Vocalist in the group.
The song is about RM as a leader trying to take BTS to the next level being that they already the biggest group in the
    "World" right now.
With a fanbase which is called "Army" of over 60 millions +.
So the pressure is on him. BTS members are Ambassadors for the country South Korea, their country depends on them they BTS alone bring in 3.9 billion dollars a year and concerts, merch, albums, stock market, Commercials, Investments, and the list go's on.
Yes, 7 young men are doing this at the ages range 24yrs-30yrs old.
So each member always wants to do individual solo album to express their own independence style. So that's what the members are doing now.
In South Korea they have mandatory military service you have to enter before you're 30yrs old.
BTS will be stopping their career for 2 years and it's going to hurt South Korea income and stock market.
    1. Jin-vocalist military 12/22-June 2024
    2. Suga-rapper military
    3/23-9/24
    3. J-Hope-rapper military 2/2024-8/3025
    4. RM-rapper military Feb or June 2024- Dec. 2025
    5. Jimin- Vocalist military 6/2024-12/2025
    6. V-Vocalist military 6/2024-12/2025
    7. Jungkook-Vocalist military 6/2024-12/2025
This album is about us getting to look inside of him to see how he feels.
South Korea is a different type of culture they don't express yourself that's a sign of weakness.
BTS has a great Company from the beginning BigHit give them the power to:
    1. write own music
    2. product own music
    3. create own dance
    4. reality shows
    5. youtube video
    6. stock in the company
Other idols company do not give this freedom to their members.
You said you didnt know anything about BTS. Their music teach you so much about yourself. It make you want to be a better person and motivate you to work harder towards your dreams.
If you don't mind when you get "some time" just look up these videos, l will change your thinking just on small things.

OK OK last comment, I prefer to keep them apart.
The first Korean artist I ever listened to was Youjeen, around 2002. Why? Because she released a Japanese solo album (without her band Cherry Filter) that was produced by my favorite bassist (J, from Luna Sea). I fell in love with Apple for your thoughts, Hey Jerks, Someday and Imitation...You, just because they were totally my style. I checked her band right when they released an album called "Made in Korea?" and I loved it too. The genre is mostly punk rock, some trance and of course beautiful, power ballads: My kids said that she was rapping (LOL) because of the cadence and rhythm of the lyrics, so who's right or wrong?

  • @loredell

    A bit of Korean:
    - As far as I know, several Asian languages' (I only know Chinese, Korean and Japanese, but I assume others use similar approaches too) word for fireworks is "flower of fire" (hanabi in JP, bulkkot in KR, yanghua in CN). But he uses a similar word in Korean deulkkot which means "flower of fields" (random flowers that grow in the wild). And he prefers to be a deulkkot rather than a bulkkot: he prefers to be grounded and grow despite anything (like weeds), rather than be a beautiful firework that gets extinguished within seconds :)
    Hope this helped!

Yes RM, in fact is an Idol. BTS is an Idol group, hightly successful, he is the leader. He mediates between the company and the artist team. RM does not stand for RapMonster, rather for REAL ME.
I would have to say that Idol groups have 1-2 rappers, it's the general structure of the teams. The 3 rappers from BTS: RM, Suga and Jhope are the best in that industry. Also S. Koreanfans really do appreciate good attractive artists in all branches. Yes 'pretty boys' are very successful.

For some it can be hard to see but even their MVs have a lot of meaning. They have a reason for every scene and the sets are very meticulously made and BTS are very detailed in all these aspects. Even if ur not sure how it correlates i can assure you that there is some way. Whether its the conceptually or following a storyline or directly representing lyrics. I think there are explanation videos available.
‼️If you react to Spring day then i would very very strongly suggest watching the explanation video for that. Their are two main ones- the two most popular- i think u shud watch both videos and you’ll see how there’s deep meaning behind every little thing in the MV! 💜
