Namjoon (RM’s real name) once said back in 2019 in one of his vlives, “These days, most people don't listen to lyrics anymore. We simply enjoy the vibes or melody [referring to songs nowadays are just being enjoyed as background sounds] As someone who wanted to become a poet, the audible feel of the words & beauty of the lyrics are more important.”

The flowers aren't about "korean culture" the flowers are about RM! They symbolizes something TO HIM specifically. That's why he uses them a lot. I do not have the answer verbatim, but basically this album is about the progression of his life in the music industry, and flowers bloom then wither. These things are important to RM as he often talks about his beginning and his end. He also mentioned in the song how the past is gone and future is unknown. I just think it's something he thinks about a lot as a poet and flowers represent that really well.

Not necessarily, 'still life' is a title given to many paintings but isn't a 'real' title. It's kind of like a perfunctory title to denote a genre of paintings that capture inanimate objects from everyday life. Flowers are common subjects, as are fruits and furniture. Rather than give these works, titles most artists simply titled them 'still life' and assigned numbers to them. This is also why in the lyrics RM says, "give me no name, cuz I'm untitled".

The point where you talk about hunger. That is not just something that has amazed me but also motivated me as an ARMY by learning from them. It's the Attitude that makes them different from most in both kpop and western music industry.
RM's wildflower actually expresses that pain and loneliness of success. In BTS's festa 2022 everyone sits together casually and talks about their creative block. It's not that they aren't affected by their success. It's that they still value their fans and most importantly the reason they do music.
How many artists will step back that often just to remind themselves of their roots especially when at the peak most of their fame, instead of living in that glory.
Thus it reflects in their style of music and lyrics...as you say 'hunger'.

see, that's one of the thing's i love about bts. RM has been in the music game for 15 years (10 years w bts)(5 years before bts) and yet he still gives it 100% he never fails to put live in his music and do his best to write amazing, meaningful lyrics and etc. even bts as a whole. they've been together for 10 years now and they still give it 100% they're lyrics remain relevant and tasteful. not like other artists who just write random lyrics or even ask other people to write lyrics and put it over some over the top beat to make it sound good. BTS is what some say (and i believe) the biggest boyband right now and yet they remain humble and just because they're at the top it doesn't make them think that they can take it easy and be lazy in their music or think they are better than any other artist. they work just as hard as any other upcoming artist and they still remain humble.

Flowers are an important symbol to RM. About “Still Life” he’s said that he found it interesting that an artist could paint a. still life of a flower, that flower that could have been painted 100 years ago and is now long dead, will live on forever, alive, in that painting. It’s sort of like him and BTS stuck in a frame for all time. But unlike the flower, he’s still moving, going forward and doesn’t want to be stuck in a frame forever.

There is an interview out about the making of this album if you ever care to check it out. I'd say you got the overall meaning of the song. RM said he was inspired by the idea of still life paintings. In one interview he said that once the music is out it belongs to the listener, so people can interpret it as they wish. My thought on the train is that they tend to move fast but everything inside is happening slow, people just sitting as they wait for their destination. But of course RM is up and moving around, refusing to sit still.

BTS syndrome is not just about 'only' music. It's wholesome- music, personality, their story from the bottom(I mean the time when all 7 had to share one small room). brotherhood and self love. Thank you for your comment and giving chance to BTS! : ) If you are willing to watch BTS more, then go to "On(Kinetic manifesto film)" and "Mic drop"! You can see the whole 7 guys!

Anderson's fun energy flows so perfectly with RM on this track. Definitely one of my faves on the album. RM is a renowned art lover so it's a cool idea for him to do his first track as a tribute to a Korean painter (the song is named after him too) and then follow it up with this song that references still life art. It plays with the concept of how still life art immortalizes items that are long gone within art. So the drawing of a fruit basket can live on for centures after the artist has died and the fruits have gone bad yet it still moves forward in life/time.

Interesting fact Anderson .Paak is actually half Korean and his wife is Korean too. BTS did a performance called Proof live in the desert and Anderson played the drums for one of the songs they performed called Yet To Come. BTS don't curse a lot on their albums but they do occasionally. There is definitely more cursing in their solo projects though. I would recommend the song Hip Hop Phile by BTS. It's a song from 2014 where they name drop a lot of American rappers/hip hop artists who have influenced them over the years.

5:45 Flowers carry a lot of symbolism throughout Asian cultures. I'd argue they do in all cultures, but that, here in the West, we've largely forgotten and/or discarded a lot of our metaphorical relationship to the natural world. [Of course, that's too huge a topic to go into here.]
In this song specifically, it helps if you think of the song's title: "Still Life"
Paak sings the chorus, which implies a meaning along the lines of, "continuing to be alive," while RM's initial jumping off point was a still life painting. RM raps, "the unstoppable still life; blooming once again my flower." Imagine a painting of flowers - they probably died long ago, but they still live, suspended in time, within the painting.

5:54 This might have already been answered, but in an Indigo break-down video RM shared that his inspiration for this was seeing still-life portraits of flowers or fruit, stuff like that and thinking...it looks vibrant and alive but this was painted over a hundred years ago so in reality everything I'm looking at is dead. I think that's why he mentioned the flowers here. And I think the train symbolizes that movement of life...he's also shared that when thinking of still-life portraits he thought about all of the hundreds of pictures that have been taken of him, but the him you see is not the him he his now because he's alive and "still" moving. So there's also some word play with the word still.

You gleaned the gist of the song and I totally agree with your comment about the kinda bars he writes displaying the thirst of someone who just started.
The flower references are more related to RM's personal interest. With his stratospheric fame with BTS, you can imagine that they live pretty hectic lives, and a lot of it is captured on camera. RM has said that he does things like visiting museums and cycling because art and nature help him stay sane in his fast-paced life. So in Wild Flower, the flower reference has to do with his desire to live gently and calmly like a wild flower. Here though, it is a reference to still life paintings. Paintings of inanimate objects like a fruit bowl or flowers in a vase are very common and they are called still life paintings. So RM, in his deep love for art feels that the flowers which were alive years ago are long dead and gone, like their painters. But through art, they live on. They are literally still life art, and also proof that that there is still, life, at the same time. RM sees himself as a still life in a museum - exhibited and viewed - but still moving forward.
I absolutely love his brain. Something I have always loved about BTS as a group and each member individually is, you can clearly see their thirst to keep growing. It's been 10 years since they debuted, and they still put in every ounce of their being into performing. They never took their success for granted and they never grew complacent. Like you said, it's something very rare. They did not grow a fanbase as large and active as ARMY is by twiddling their thumbs. They proved their worth and artistry a hundred times over.
You should really check out the whole of Indigo! It's brilliant! You can think of the album as his diary..

Flower is about growth, and he is going through a lot of growth. Just so you know, their CEO supported them in their artistic growth, and encouraged it. They started out as a Hip Hop Idol group in 2013, and they wrote and produced thier own music. Their company was very small and had no power in the KPOP industry, and so BTS had to work their buts off in their beginnings for years, and their company almost went bankrupt. They had to be creative with their promotions, and they were basic promoting themselves on UA-cam, doing covers and Vlogs of their trainee days which was from 2010 to 2013, and RM is the group leader and the first member.
They had cuss words in their music, and their songs got banned from being performed on TV sometimes, also from the messages, speaking thier truth about the Korean education system, how young people are treated, etc. They also don't hold to any one genre. If you listen to all the songs on RM's album, they all seem like a similar vibe, but different genre's. He says each song is a different color. Also, he started out writing poetry and chose rap because he said Rap is just Rythm and Poetry. All the members are students of hip hop and any genre or topic that is covered by them is from their heart and soul.
I am including here *a medley of 7 songs, in a 10 minute video that BTS dropped for their fan-base (ARMY) during their 8 year anniversary celebration. The video should give you a good picture of their diversity and range of music over the years from debut (6/13/2013) to 2020*

RM said that they were just 7 regular guys from Korea, joined by their passion for music. (Paraphrased) Something like that. All the guys are extremely humble and very different from what people may think of as Idol and what an Idol should be. But they also aren't about titles like that. They are themselves. So he keeps proving more to himself that he is amazing artist like any of the guys from BTS and he deserves the recognition. You will be surprised the milestones this group had and still have to outcome. You really hit the nail on the head here for why people love BTS: they are, and always will be, still hungry. They recently gave a free concert and performed like the rent was due. It’s wild: they dance so hard. EVERY TIME, they sing/dance simultaneously and don’t just lip sync, they write incredibly deep and personal lyrics, they always push to be better people and artists, they stay HUMBLE. Always. They consistently affirm that they don’t see themselves as celebrities but as people.
Also BTS are the opposite of whatever corporate idea you have about idols. They are an industry disruptor: intentionally authentic and autonomous. The founder of their label hated how artists were treated at the big 3 agencies and hated the lack of artistic expression in their music so he founded a label in which his artists had creative and personal freedom. And from that we got the biggest band that has ever existed: BTS. People appreciate authenticity.

extremely late to the party here, but i wanted to weigh in on the question about flowers. I can't really speak to Korean poetry as a whole, but I do think that RM has a particular affinity for flower imagery, especially in this album. Flowers for him seem to capture this tension between image and life, because they are appreciated for their beauty, but they are also organic, living things. They are a particularly common subject for still life paintings, which is how they appear here. I actually think there's a fair amount of coherence between this and Wildflower, particularly in the line "give me no name, 'cuz I'm untitled"-wildflowers are flowers without names, whose beauty exists outside of human cultivation. The flower in the still life is almost the polar opposite, then, framed and rendered lifeless through painting. To me this song is about how constant observation he experiences feels like a frame that tries to box him in, but the reality of who he is cannot be contained, and he continues to live his life how he wants to.

Hehe, BTS have been swearing throughout their career just not in main MVs. A lot of b-sides and especially concert footage would have it. We are used to it, but they also don't overuse it or make it sound pretentious. If you want to continue to explore solos from BTS before trying group projects, anything else from RM's Indigo is amazing. J-Hope's Jack in the Box album from July this year is crazy good too and very innovative. J-Hope is another rapper from BTS. His album has 2 MVs, More and Arson. Just like Indigo it has been critically acclaimed. As to the guys being rich but still keeping their passion for their art, it's 100%true. BTS is the biggest group in the world because they have all the good sides of what being an idol (great production, flawless looks, choreographies, big stage performances, catchy tunes)
while at the same time not having all the bad sides of idol culture (being too corporate, not aloud to be themselves, not aloud to write produce their own stuff, and if they can its never things too personal..etc).
So they are idols in the overall sense of it but it doesn't limit their creativity, they are as authentic as a normal non-idol artist in korea. That's why many would argue that they aren't a kpop group despite working in the idol industry.

Still Life is like when a body stuck still
In box or jail cell but you as Person keep moving inside of that box right, but that box or cell remain still, it's like when you
riding on train or bus, you imagine things take you wonders in your dreams by visualizing things that you dream of, or wish you have, take a flower portrait, for example, the fame sit still it can't move, but a live flower pot plant grows alive, as it grows moving,

So therefore we humans keep moving in our imagination in our brain else where, or day dreaming in our Imagination but our body stay still in one place, as our minds take us a different location by moving to think about our imagination, while our body remain still on our beds or sitting down on chair which is also about Still Life,
For example some people rides a

forward but those People has to wait for their location to remain still, but our minds take us else where, through our imagination keep while our location rides forward in our life, so in our
imagination we keep moving not stay in place or one spot, but imagine or thinking forward about our life like what you want life or having beautiful dreams about your life by moving forward keep positive not negatively but imagining
about the true nature about life in general about yourself, about your family
love life or your kids about their future
you think, imagining or dreams about
in you, but body remain still in that room
in that room thinking about thoughts or
    Imagination or dreams moving forward
about your life in general and that what
    Still Life is about,
Now if look in RM music video you
would notice He's only one moving
and everything else behind him stop
or remain (Still) kinda like froze in time,
He's the only one moving which means
Life so I'm (Still Life) but everything is
froze or still which means they or it not
moving, and this is RM imagination as
you see at end when Lady approach him
so he was thinking or imagining all that
while sitting still on that train,
Did you see part where RM still sit down
on train read his book, while the glass reflection image shadow next him got Up and dance moving around on train
as he sit still on train seat, but you see
both his shadow image and himself
appears at end, So what RM is saving
Life is better than death if you stay positive to remain positive of your thoughts by imagining looking forward
to your future something that you passion about doing by imagining what
you want, that one of reason what life
is about don't waste time because too
short and we don't know how long we
going to live on this earth, life is better
than death just like RM written in his
    lyrics, Still Life..😎✌
    Excuse for my long post..✌😂

The members of BTS, all seven, could seem very greedy still now, specially the three rappers. They have fame and success and money, yes, but they want more, they need more. They came from the hip-hop feels, from rap or street dance, and i think, like their early days heroes, they want respect. They mostly know for being idol and for lot of world, idol are just boys with pretty face, and some people see them still just for that. They want to be acknowledge for being musician, songwriters, great performers, composer, producer.... True artist.
RM is passionate with art and become respected for his way of promoting modern art and artist. I think, more and more, he want to let his mark in music, to let a legacy behind him. So yes, in some way, even if he has notoriety, he's still hungry for more. And it's very refreshing to see them still passionate about music, being so serious about what they do.
I don't know what their future reserve to them but for sure, they have open a way : you don't need walls, they are idol and musician and rapper and dancers because in fact, you can be what you want : you can be a rapper and make photo with beautiful flower background.

"Still Life" in the sense of the "living items" in paintings, like flowers, fruits, etc. In those classic oil paintings to contemporary paintings, often painters name their work "still life" b/c it's life items, sitting still, as in "not moving" meaning of still. But of course, this is RM we're talking about here, so of course he's going to utilize the multiple definitions or ways how the words and phrases can be used to describe what he's trying to convey. So while his original inspiration is of the paintings he sees in art museums, but also the concept of how those paints, the flowers in them are dead already after hundreds of years, but it's "still alive" in the painting form and continues to exist in the present and future. And then the "moving on" "keep moving" themes as well. You see the word plays. Hence, the train and the videography techniques where items freeze while people are still moving... train's moving... ah, however you want to interpret it. Ha.

Suggest after you're done w/ 1~4 (and Mic Drop and Ddaeng are also kind of diss-tracks, and Ugh is beyond common diss, but elevated to a broader level beyond just dissing their haters, but haters in general to others as well)..... after hearing cyphers 1~4, suggest to do their LIVE w/ the medley of all 4 cyphers. Personally, hearing the studio version doesn't quite do it justice. The link to the live performance (and this one has subtitles!) is here. Hope you can see it (sometimes comments w/ links get blocked b/c thought of as spam?).

The MV: you are sitting down on a train, but the train is still moving, brings you to a destination. Still life is the sort of painting that usually depicts "dead nature" (fruits and so on on a display!) which was still life (plus "mine is still a life" -- let him live, he's not a celebrity, he's a human as a flower, just one more), so he says he's still going forward, they or he hasn't peaked yet and has so much more to share. The train symbolizes the movement going forward. but as it disintegrates means that movement should not be framed or caged, but free to move in any direction, even backwards, upwards, etc.
I think Korean MVs make more sense than having someone just singing to the camera of ladies bouncing their assets :)

No, not 'still alive'. The title connects to art.
RM made this because he loves art. Some time back he has seen a painting, a century old style of painting called 'Still Life".
The items in these painting are still and alive even thought the world keeps moving.
Just so you know, the RM=BTS rabbithole is 400 songs deep.

To analyze BTS music videos / lyrics, group or solo work, you have to look at the poetic / creative side of things as well. It's not always going to be on the face. For example, the train, as some people already said, represent moving forward while standing still, the whole concept of the song. But trust me.. with BTS, everything always has a purpose and a meaning to be there. It's never just because it looks cool.

  • @Tish256

You have to stop looking at him like an idol tho. (RM)\ BTS aren't t like the other idol groups they are on a whole different level. Plus this is his SOLO work he doesn't have to be boxed in to one category. He is a song writer and producer so he has a few hats that he wears. This whole album was inspired by one of his favorite artist.

    • @Jurnalist_
      @Jurnalist_  2 роки тому +2

Not that I look at him like an idol. Idol culture is one we don't have in America. I understand he is an idol so its crazy to me. to see someone viewed in that light make such passionate and heartfelt music as most people in his shoes cannot do that anymore.

    • @mollyfurball
      @mollyfurball 2 роки тому +1

@@Jurnalist_ Well, their boss founded BigHit (now HYBE) for that exact reason, where he was not content w/ the idol industry practices and wanted something REAL and GENUINE, so he started out his own company in an attempt the have changes in the industry (he was a writer/producer for 1 of the top 3 kpop companies back then). So the 1st thing he told his artists was he wanted them to tell of their own stories and messages, not what "idols" are stereotypically perceived as. Well, he did start BTS as a Hip Hop group, but then decided to go the idol route, a mash-up of sorts, which is also a factor why BTS got a lot of hate (till today) because they were an "hip hop idol" group, which in itself is an oxymoron, b/c how can you do genuine hip hop if you're an idol that's controlled by the company? Hip hop side of people accused them of selling out (RM and SUGA who were both from the Korean underground hip hop scene) into labels and idol genre (and wear "make up" like girls, one asshole said to rag on them), and the idol side of the music industry dissed at them for being UGLY and not conforming to the "idol" image of pretty and pristine looking boys (they were in hip hop style clothing and gears at debut... AND didn't have a lot of money/resources/connections b/c BigHit was small, so they also get laughed at). Anyways, the "idols" in this generation are slowly shifting among some companies and artists, and less the traditionally very "perfect" image of an idol (where 1 older idol said "in those days, we don't poop"... meaning the "image" what the idols have to maintain back then) and are more "real" (well, as real as some can be) and approachable/relatable to common people, and not god-like on a pedestal like the older days.

Revisiting this reaction after a year and to your comments about "typical idols" and "not being allowed to cuss" and "fitting in a box"
I know you are aware of this now, but I think your comments perfectly illustrate why BTS didn't fit in the Idol industry and why they were rejected by the industry and a little bit of why they didn't fit anywhere really. They never fit in a box, they always spoke their mind, including cussing, and they had the creative and artistic freedom that most idols lack even now. It is just highlighted here by your surprise at an "idol" doing something unexpected.
Also, you giggled at him saying "shit" but then missed it in the same section when he said "fuck it, let's go" LOL

Thank you for being open minded after finding out RM is the leader of BTS, I’m sure people have told you that BTS’s company had a completely different way of producing them, letting the say what they want to say and of course now that BTS is the biggest act in the world and built their company from the ground up the owner chairman of Hybe has said numerous times they’re partners even gave them stock in the company when it went public. Hybe and BTS are a complete anomaly in the Korean and western music system.

Still life is based from an art style w/ the same name "Still Life"
The term “still life” describes a work of art that shows inanimate objects from the natural or man-made world, such as fruit, flowers, dead game, and/or vessels like baskets or bowls. Looked at another way: still lifes depict things that are “still” and don’t move.
RM own interpretation of "Still Life":
'Still Life' is stuck on the canvas, but it's alive and eternal, but it's still moving forward. So it's about a still life that's still moving forward."
"As a non-native English speaker, I interpreted it as 'Life Still goes on'. Even though the picture is stationery in a frame, it is still alive. I wanted to talk about life ongoing, moving away from fixed canvas"
As for the used of Flower as the theme in both songs (wild flower and still life) RM is a huge fan of art and appreciating nature. Even he has made up term on his hobbies on going on nature, lying in park and bicycling w/c is called "Namjooning"
In wildflower song you will notice in chorus a term "flower work" it is a made up word by RM from the combination of the words "wildflower" and fireworks. As both words are heavily used as the key words and theme in "wildflower" and both are also sound the same in korean (wildflower - deulkkot, fireworks - bulkkotnori). RM expressed that the lyrics of the songs is his "desired to live like a humble and tranquil WILDFLOWER rather than a flamboyant flame that quicly blows out (like fireworks). RM album indigo is heavily influence by art. His favorite artist is "Yun" that he title one of his songs in this album based on him featuring the legendary ERYKAH BADU. Hope you check out his whole album INDIGO. And also BTS and RM isn't your typical idol grp. They are beyond kpop. I won't even considered them as a kpop bec not every korean artists is kpop idols. Best example here is RM album indigo.
