Hi Dennis, I’m so glad you made this video! It will help me restore an old Mitchell 302 I purchased with chipped paint and salt marks. The inside seems fine though and I used your videos to go through the cleaning part. Thank you so much for everything you do!
A very much needed video . I have so many Reels that need repainting. A good air brush guy could make some good money painting Reels for people I would think .
Thanks Denis. Being a total novice at any kind of mechanical work, but learning fast thanks to your tutorials, this one is a life changer. Way to go. Thanks again. Raymondo. UK.
Hi Raymond - Thanks for the note and for watching. My channel's goal is to teach others. Glad that this is helpful to you. Best wishes for great fishing - Dennis
Ive had a couple of Penn Spinfisher 950SS reel bodies ceramic coated. Havnt tried a spool yet. Can get done in a multitude of standard and bizarre colours. Held up very very well.
Penn had issues at times with paint adhesion on the entire Spin Fisher series of reels. The spools being anodized aluminum hold up quite well provided you wash them down with soap and warm water after use. KG Coatings Gunkote works great and is easy to apply provided you sandblast the surface prior to coating. For coatings locally available at auto parts stores, self etching primer in rattle cans, then rattle can appliance epoxy from Home Depot or Lowes.
@@gungadinn Agree with you 100% about the paint adhesion issues. I just stripped them beadblasted the bodies then polished up any rough spots and took them to the guys who do all my turbo exhaust housings and engine parts and had them coated. Quick n painless. Didnt even need to tap out any threads once done and they were coated both inside and out.
That sounds great. When I think of Penn and bad paint, I immediately go to their Silver Series 1XX of reels. At least the metal underneath was silver! Worst paint ever on those. I wouldn't even know where to start to try and repaint one of those
This is exactly how I do it except that I use a different paint remover. I do several coats of primer which I wet sand with very fine grit sandpaper. After two coats I do the same with the color and finish with a clear coat. I also use automotive paint. This must have been an early version 704Z if it was black with a black spool. Very good video Dennis. I hate painting reels so it is very much a last resort for me. To do it correctly it is a lengthy and exhausting process and is very hard on my arthritic hands! - Chris
Thanks Chris - This process took all day, between the stripping, drying, and multiple coasts of paint to the finish. It takes time and patience - Best wishes - Dennis
Hi Dennis , Another Very Useful Video. Thanks . I Use A Paint Remover Called Citri Strip . I Really Like it And It Can Be Used Indoors. It's A Very Safe Product . Other Than That I Would Do It The Same As You . I Too Like To Leave Them Original If Their Not Too Bad.
I've always said, it's only new once. Far too often people get carried away polishing up old things ( namely hand tools ) to a mirror polished state they assume to be representative of it's original condition, all based on the false idea that nothing old can be useful and of practical value unless it looks new again. Painted objects sometimes just really need the paint, especially when that paint is a protective finish but I've just never had good luck finding anything that's as durable as the original paints. It's not something I find myself needing/ wanting to do very often or I might look into powder coating or something.
Thanks - I am a fan of patina too! I very rarely repaint anything fishing or hardware related, unless it is to prevent rust or deterioration. - I appreciate the note
Funny abour that aircraft paint stripper not suitable for use on air craft. I have a chinese Abu reel not suitable for fishing-not in water anyway. Does ok on dry land.
“I’m Earl Scheib, and I’ll paint any reel, any color for $29.95. No ups, no extras,” ..............bring back any memories? you did a better job then Earl would have
We use to call Earl Scheib, Earl Schlob. The $29.95 paint job included no prep work. Get the car primed, everything you want taped up, and they did a half way decent paint job. It beat rust anyway.

The Air brush would help a lot. I was trying to take the easy, affordable approach here - Thanks again Bobby

It did turn out nice though.
Thanks
you did a first class job on that, looks great
Thanks 👍. I don't repaint much, but folks have asked for an example, so I did this one - Dennis

+1 on the Citristrip. I have also used it to remove varnish from bamboo fly rods. It doesn't hurt the glue and stays where you put it.
Great video ! Thank you !
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the note - Dennis
Great refurb Den cheers 👍
Thanks - Best wishes for a great 2024! Dennis

I'm thinking you should remove the cardboard and wash your part in dish soap and warm water before priming.
I am afraid of water on bare metal before priming. Thanks

Well said. Those are not may favorite versions of the reel. Maybe you can use them for fishing as sinkers?

@@gungadinn the paint would fly off in sheets because they sanded it with a dirty handkerchief
Zinc chromate,appliance epoxy,easy peasy
I don't repaint much, but I am willing to give it a try. Thanks for the tip - Dennis
