  • Harbor Freight's Predator 3500 watt Inverter Generator is a great deal at $699. It provides 3000 running watts of power and can run for hours on end on very little gasoline. The build quality seems to be well above anything i've seen from Harbor Freight's generators up to this point. It is very well built and has performed flawlessly for me so far.
    The instructions are typical harbor freight instructions, and they contradict themselves regarding the break-in service requirements. Of course, the generator should be ran on lighter loads for the first 25 hours, but the instructions mention changing the oil at 8 hours on one page - then say to 25 hours is the break-in oil change interval. To be safe I changed the oil at 8 hours. I'm glad I did. The oil looked about as I expected with a metallic sheen common on oil in a new china made engine. At 25 hours I was pleasantly surprised to see the oil was perfectly clean of any metallic flake. Not only that, but the performance of the generator up to this point has been issue free. I did change the spark plug to an NGK plug at 8 hours, but the original torch plug showed no signs of issue.
    These generators do appear to run on the rich side when going from a light load to a heavy power draw, so regular oil changes at the specified 100-hour interval are highly recommended - if not sooner.
    Overall this is a great generator thus far and I expect a long life from this product. More videos to come on the Harbor Freight Predator 3500 watt Inverter Generator, so stay tuned!

      I cannot agree and thank you more! I am in Puerto Rico and just purchased this going into our serious portion of the hurricane season. This is my first generator and do not wish to repeat the discomfort of Maria and lengthy power outages from last year. I am reading about maintenance now in preparation. Any tips for the initial start up? I will be sure to change the oil @ the first 8 hours. You are the best!

    Good video. I just bought this generator and ran it through a break in routine. Everybody has their own method. What I did was I ran it for the first 30 minutes with a light load. Next, I ran it for about 45 minutes with some load on it. And finally I ran it for about an hour with a fairly heavy load at about 30- 50 % capacity. Each time I changed the oil. They say 20 oz. of oil, but mine seems to take a little less. Each time I got some metallic residue in the oil but it was less each time. I will change and check it again around 5 hours. I had to coat the air filter with a little oil. The spark plug was welded in the thing - I had to get my automotive tune up socket and a 3/8 ratchet to get it out. I checked it and then put a little anti seize on the plug thread before re-inserting. I checked the spark arrestor - it was good. After the break in, I drained the carb bowl to see if there was any debris. All I have is ethanol gas here, so I have to mix Stay Bil in the gas and make sure I run the generator on a regular basis. I got a magnetic oil cap which does pick up some debris, but be careful grabbing it after you run the generator - it gets hot. Bottom line - it is a good generator. Highly recommend!

    I just bought one of these. Ran it for the 1st time today. Ran it 20 minutes then changed the oil. Was already dirty looking and packed full of metal flakes. Seems to be running good so far. Have not put any real load on it yet. Will likely run it a few more hours than swap the oil again. Only holds about 1/2 Qt so it is cheap to swap it. Instructions call for SAE 10W-30

    Just an update on the break in period and oil change intervals. Recently purchased this generator. The owners manual now shows the break in period lasts 30hrs and the oil change maintenance schedule now clearly shows that the oil should be changed every 6 months or 100hrs of use. Hope this helps. Thank you for this video. Helped convince me in pulling the trigger on my purchase.

    I have this Predator and the Sportsman 1000 inverter models. From the looks of the OHV valve cover I'm thinking this might have the 212 hemi engine. I agree this is a quality product. I have found that it does run better when it is able to get additional air through the oil fill door by a modification. I changed my oil first at 1.5 hours than again at 6.5, 14.5, then finally at 25 hours to keep it clean inside. Nice job on the videos!

    What type and weight of oil did you use?

  • @NETWizzJbirk
    @NETWizzJbirk 4 роки тому

    On any small engine I would do the first oil change at 20 minutes to 1 hour because that is when the majority of the metal ends up in the oil. Then for this one I would change again at 8, and again at 25 (changing to full synthetic). After that I would change it every 50 hours. If it doesn’t consume oil, the oil looks okay, and you are in a storm... I would allow it to run up to 100 hours on synthetic. If it has an hour-meter I would once run it only 25 hours OR 75 hours to align it to 100, 150, 200... instead of 75, 125, 175 etc.

      +Perfectly Flawed 50 isn't checked for oil change. Wouldn't hurt anything, and I'll probably change at 50 anyway, but I will also do every 100 hours (or 6-months) after I get to 100 too.

    • @svdp34104
      @svdp34104 7 років тому

      I am confused, I thought you said in the video that it should be changed after the first 8, than every 25. Like you I bought mine for RV use and changing every 8hrs seems extreme. I will be using it for the first time for Hurricane Irma.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  7 років тому

      +svdp34104 technically, that's what the instructions say, but it appears to be a misprint. Likely someone copied and pasted when making the chart. I went with what I believe they actually intended to say - first at 8hrs, then 25. From then on I'll be at the standard schedule of every 100-hours (or 6-months).
      You're in Florida? Drive that RV up to Alabama. You're welcome to park it in my yard until the storm blows through. Stay safe!

    VERY critical questions to ask about ANY generator -- questions that are rarely covered by reviewers:
    -- NUMBER ONE, single most important question beyond basic performance specs: Does it have an hour meter? ANY generator, with a 4-stroke engine, that does not include an hour meter is inexcusable regardless of price. Apparently, this one does have an hour meter.
    -- Remote control for electric start (if included)?
    -- Sine or square wave power?
    -- Total harmonic distortion?
    -- Auto-throttling depending on load?
    -- Ease of draining carburetor for long-term storage?
    -- Ease of adding, changing or draining the oil?
    -- Engine displacement?
    -- Long-term durability comparison with Honda?
    -- Accurate, dependable fuel gauge?
    -- Toolless access to the engine?
    -- VERY IMPORTANT: Availability of replacement parts?

  • @georgelloyd2201
    @georgelloyd2201 6 років тому

    Documentation is inconsistent with these generators - both the 2000 and the 3500. They updated the owner's manual to correct the maintenance chart - oil change should be at 6 months or 50 hours - but they increased the break-in to 30 hours from 25 hours. The specifications section still lists oil as 10W-40 even though it's listed as 10W-30 in other parts of the manual. An email reply from HF confirmed the 10W-30 as being correct.

I have a new one that I'm not sure is maybe bad or not since it does a bit of surging in RPMs mostly when not under load, but also sometimes under a ~550w load..........THOUGHTS????? Thanks KEVcentral! _John

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  7 років тому +2

      +jdhiv4 Thanks for the comment, but the math doesn't add up. 25 isn't reached by a multiplier of 8. I get what you're saying, but that isn't how it is stated in the instructions. At least not the way they display it. Plus, I've never seen an engine that recommends 3+ oil changes in the first 25-hours. If that's what they think is needed; it speaks volumes about how they perceive the quality of the product.
      Regarding the surging: I've seen other videos of people having surging. One guy had 4 bad units before getting a good one. He took apart the carbs and discovered that the bad ones all have poorly casted carbs. I guess I was lucky on the first try. Mine is smooth with or without loads. If it were me - I would exchange it. I would be concerned with the longevity of a generator that surges constantly with little/no load.

    Thanks for the great video! Do you think it's worth the couple hundred extra to buy the 3,500 instead of the 2000? I'm thinking that the electric start and the greater load capacity might be worth the extra gas cost, plus it may last longer under equal loads and definitely run a microwave

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  6 років тому +1

      I like the 3500 and it’s electric start. If you need to move it a lot it is worth note that it’s heavy and not a 1-person move.

    • @shananagans5
      @shananagans5 5 років тому +1

      Like Kev says, it depends on how much you will need to move it. It's a tad over 100 lbs and the wheels are small so they don't roll well over anything but a smooth hard surface. If you can leave it in place or put it on a cart to roll it around it's great. We are older women so the electric start is a great option. Press a button & it's running.
      If you need to move it around lots, like toss it in the back of a truck for camping or something, it's a little to heavy to be convenient, even if you are a younger, healthy man.
      I have seen complaints on this generator but it seems to be mostly people that don't know how to maintain small engines in general. Plug gets fouled, spark arrest gets clogged, carb gets gummed up from ethanol etc.
      They do come with a cheap plug, we replaced ours with a Champion plug but, if you keep the plug clean, clean the spark arrestor and use non ethanol gas, or use a fuel stabilizer, they run great. These are normal maintenance things that any small engine needs.
      These also have an easy fuel drain. On the bottom of the float bowl, there is a screw where you can drain the tank and the carb for long term storage. Just twist the screw and the fuel drains out a hose.
      Ours is on a cart so it's high enough to just set a fuel jug under it to drain the fuel out after each use. That way you don't have ethanol sitting in your carb and fuel lines.
      I love ours but we don't move it much. If you want something easily portable, go with a 2000.

      +Stu West The 8-hr change looked good, so the 8 & 25 hour intervals worked for me. Now this is a HF product, so that experience can vary greatly from one unit to another. An over abundance of caution is always best, so I would agree that it couldn't hurt (and may be better for most) to change after a short bit of running. Thanks for commenting.

The big advantages are if something goes wrong Harbor Freight will simply exchange it (especially if you have their warranty), and if you throw in the towel on a repair, you can by three (3) of these for the price of an EU3000is. Honda’s benefit is a three year warranty (maybe 4), and they have a network of repair shops... parts to repair Honda are also easy to get as are shop manuals. With this Predator, I would verify the air filter is lightly oiled, and I would remove the Torch spark-plug and put in the proper NGK. Then you are all set for years most likely

    I just bought the same generator and noticed that my voltmeter shows it is putting out 20 VDC instead of 12 VDC. Is that normal? Also, the engine run timer on mine only shows current use and not total usage. Is this normal? If so I guess I need to keep a log...

    Does this charge the battery for starter while it's running? Or is that what the little plug is for I changed mine at 50 hrs didn't know it had that much on it oh also it kept shutting off by itself in a thunder storm didn't have grounding rod just thought I'd ask you probably know more than I do thanks

    Could you check voltage with a multi meter from the hot of the 15amp 120v outlet to the hot of the 30amp 120v outlet. Im curious if it would provide 240 volts. Unlikely but has been shown to be the case on other generators set up similarly.

    Hi just bought this generator today and when I went to do the first start with the starter switch it just sounds like it’s running the The mechanism but not firing up the motor. I then went on the use the pull start and it started up fine, does anyone know if there is something that could have possibly came lose to not be able to use the switch to start?

      +Julio J Resto I’m not aware of anywhere that currently sells parts, though the same generator is sold under many brands, so at some point they should be available. If you’re needing something try calling Harbor Freight. They may set aside some for parts use, but most likely they’ll tell you to take it back to the HF store to swap out for a new one. Are you having a problem with the generator?

    Hi im from PR , i call at harbor today they tell me is not in stock . In january is available . My question ehat schedule you do change oil at 8 hour, 25 hour and 100 hour correct. What oil do you use. Too i hear about fuel stabilizer what is and how use it , what number of ngk spark plug use and why change at 8 hour, sorry my english are not fluent. Im beginer in inverter generator 😂thanks

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  7 років тому +1

      PR - you guys have some tough times right now. Is the situation getting any better there? Regarding the oil: I changed mine at 8hrs, then again at 25. The next change will be at 100 hours, then every 100 hours after that. I use SuperTech (cheap Walmart brand - great for running in an engine) conventional 10w30 oil up until 100 hours. Then I'll switch to a fully synthetic 10w30 oil. If you look through the comments there is another comment where I posted the NGK plug I used. Or if you can wait until I get home I can look at it and tell you what it is :)

    That is very nice inverter.........I can see that yours has the "Hemi" Predator 212 cc engine which is a Yahama Clone.......Which in my opinion is a better than Honda/"Clondas". Some of the Predator 212cc engines are Honda Clones or "Clondas".

    Don't used Automotive oil in air cooled engines it doesn't have the ZDDP (Zinc) Needed for small Engines You need a oil with at lest with 1000ppm Zinc 1200-1400ppm is best Newer automotive oils only have 600-700ppm because High Zinc will harm the Catalytic Converter on automobiles ! Use a Diesel Rated Oil they have a Higher Zinc content Plus extra additives that help the oil handle more heat One Great Oil is Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 great for colder & hotter weather If you want your Generator to last for many years Use a Quality Diesel rated Oil like Rotella T6 !

    • @volvo09
      @volvo09 7 років тому +1

      I switched to diesel oils in all my engines after learning that too. Rotella t6 has been great so far. Although I haven't gotten any analysis done.

Hahaha but I’ll just do what you did seems to be the smart choice. I have one question is fuel stabilizer a must use for everyday use or is it just for when your storing it? Thanks for the video it helped alot

    • @SkinnySkinch
      @SkinnySkinch 5 років тому

      if you use ethanol gas you need to use a fuel stabilizer 100%. if you use non ethanol gas(recreational or boat gas as it's labeled sometimes) you should be fine unless you let it sit for a year without use. it never hurts with any type of gas to use a fuel stabilizer though.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  6 років тому

      I’ve seen many people that have done that. It’s only necessary if the generator exhibits surging due to air starvation. Personally, I would return a generator that had those symptoms and keep swapping until I got one that didn’t. That said, it does work if you have air restriction issues.
