as they may have said in the roaring twenties, "it is the bees knees", "the cats meow". So very happy for you, I know the previous owner who started the restoration would be so pleased that it is in your hands.

I love it when the right car finds its way into the hands of the right person. Can't wait to hear it run. That is one heavy duty car port.

Simon from the UK here.... Well Johnathan you deserve to have this car, you have and are working so hard to look after your family. May I say you must be a one off guy as they broke the mould when you was born. Enjoy your car and may I say it's freaking awesome. I'll have one and thank you for showing us and being there. As you know I've got terminal cancer and watching your videos does help me. Thank you ever so much Johnathan

ps when you hand crank her keep your thumbs on the same side as your fingers. it prevents breaking your thumbs. learned from an old farmer who used a 1920's truck to haul corn to the silo in 1966.

Cranks many tractors by hand, even my pulling tractor before, best distance for a hand crank was 20 feet into the woods, that was on a Farmall F-20.

What an awesome Indiana built Elcar 8-80 Sedan Jonathan. Glad to hear you're going to keep it as original as possible, seeing it is a rare car. I helped a friend restore a 1931 Model A pickup back to original.I saw on the internet that it came from Arizona. The color was Light or dark coach blue or Thebes gray for the year.

Any real car guy can see what a neat car this is. Low production, great condition, something to be proud of especially once you finish it. The nail holes in the wood will tell some of the story as to how the vinyl top should go. Much as you have of the original it shouldn't be a problem to figure out. That car is too nice for just a high roof.....close in three sides of that shed(at least)- maybe even concrete and full enclosure. Don't leave it to chance, it's too nice a car. Get nice dry storage asap. It's a really neat piece, great find, should be a great investment too. Should be nest egg worthy when you leave the wreckers for someone else to run. Thanks for sharing

Looking forward to your taking us along on Elcar project. Particularly interested in seeing "in house" nickel plating. All the best from Left Coast Johnny.

What an amazing car. So much has been done already. I've had some trouble converting vacuum fuel pumps to electric. Even with a regulator installed the carbs will sometimes overflow. You are building a structure worthy of the fabulous Elcar. I do see siding in the future. If you're anything like me, the older you get the more you enjoy working in a shop with a roof and a floor and a heater. Enjoy your new treasure.

Sweet! She's gonna be a beautiful runner. And a red iron garage too, very nice. Congratulations man, your lifetime of hard work is paying off.
I worked for a general const outfit in the 90s and we built some good sized Varco Pruden buildings, the best roof for them back then was standing seam. They have no exposed fasteners,it is all clipped from underneath the roof panels. The seams "stand" up off the panels as the name suggests. The downside is you need a seamer machine to crimp it but I believe they can be rented and a day to learn to operate it and do that size roof wouldn't be any problem for you. Anyhow after some purlons and roof steel the carport will be ready for girders and side steel. In the meantime, after the roof is on, I would suggest using X-cables with turnbuckles to keep it all rigid and square because without girders and sidesteel to stiffen it a big storm could cause problems. Those are pretty good/beefy beams you have in there though so maybe I just worry too much.

That is one handsome vehicle which can only get better with some TLC . Its going to be really interesting to see how you tackle the roof and interior repair. The engine is lovely to look at. You could take that and show it in a Gallery and it would be better than most so called art work that i have seen for a long time.

Well Johnathan, you finally got a prewar car! Congrats!🍾 My wife has family in Elkhart where that car would have been built. There were a lot of car manufacturers in this part of the country back then. The Revere motorcar was built here where I live in the north central part of Indiana. We actually have a restored example on display here in town. Cars like those were something special back then. Usually the manufacturers would build a rolling chassis with running gear and then deliver that to a coach builder who would build a body for the car. You have a very nice surviving example there, and I have no doubt this one will be back on the road in the not too distant future!

This is gonna be an interesting and long series. My dad bought a 36 Rolls that was a basket case literally, was ina peach orchard in middle Ga. Parts in baskets and boxes. Took him about 3 years and lots of his time as well as professional help. Parts are going to be expensive. Be careful, you can easily exceed the market value of a runner. You are a handy guy, so you should be ok, don’t rush it. Good luck, we’re all counting on you.

what an incredible car! When I was a little kid 40 something years ago, somebody had an Elcar down the street... At that point, I did not realize that it was an actual manufacturers name, I thought somebody had just called that because they couldn't figure out what sort of car it was. Everybody kind of thought it was some kind of Plymouth or Dodge!

Good looking 1927 Elcar. My latest edition of Cummins CLASSICAL CAR has a good size article of the companies that made the fabrics for the car seats back then starting in the 1920s. When you drive it go to Lowes and get a carbon monoxide detector, and put it in that car. Time for a cold bottle of beer !

Hey a little tip I use in my restorations if your cars are going to sit awhile before work. I use PPG epoxy primer over the rare metal after blasting, not lacquer primer I have found out thru the years primer is porous and lets moisture in to the metal causing the car to rust again. I don't use etching primer over blasted metal, it seals the solvents in the blasted pores of the metal and causes solvent popping. The epoxy primer to me is bullet proof procedure. You have a 24-48 hour top coating window.Epoxy Primer, in my experience, will go over everything and everything will go over it. If it goes over that time frame scuff 180 or 220 dry it off shoot another coat on the surface and then use Polyester Surfacer. I call it my concrete in a can. My procedures are : #1. down to rare metal #2 replace panels or body repairs # 3 Epoxy primer #4 Polyester Primer, guide coat, block w/ 320 dry that down after several days of curing if no bake booth & fix any dings the guide coat brings out #5 2K Primer, guide coat, block w/ 400 wet, fix dings, # 6 At this stage if ready for paint, you can use the epoxy primer as a sealer if needed, just add a 5-10% reducer to make it flow even. It is a lengthy process but I have good results with it. I don't mix components if I start with PPG I stay with PPG. If the customer wants custom colors candy's or pearles or whatever affects it all goes over the PPG products. Then wet sanding w/ 1000 or 1200 then 1500 then 3000 (5000 depending on how the 3000 looks) then buff ! I like this procedure it works for me & I have used it for years. Contact me at Ponitac49SS@aol.com for any another tips or tricks. Thanks Paul Wilmoth !

Great project. Very complete car. You'll be getting a huge history lesson working on it. You can prime the fuel pump by cheating, you can use a hand vacuum pump or hook a hose to a vacuum source on a running engine for a minute. Thus will be a great series.

Add some modern safety features in it like a collapsible steering column, reinforce those door skins with steel for side impacts and add seat belts. Lost a friend of mine to a steering column spearing him on a bad front impact, worthwhile to look into.

Regarding the fuel pump. The vacuum tank can give a few hassles unless you are really familiar with them. I haven't worked on one for about 4 years but the last one, the customer got me to run the fuel feed right through the tank after all the guts was stripped out (It had gone rusty inside) and I fitted one of those 6 Volt fuel pumps at the rear. They are noisy things so I had it mounted on Mercedes rubber pump mounts,The car was an Essex Supersix tourer so the last thing you want is constant clicking noises. They pump 6 PSi which is way too much for the updraft carbies ,so you need one of those fuel reducers in the line to cut it back to 2 Psi. It makes life easier ,so you don't need to mess about with the fuel system on the side of the road if it decides to play up.
