    "Do not study to memorize, study to understand." OMG that helped me a lot b/c i was just thinking to myself, "The memorization in nursing school will probably kill me!" ! I'm not yet in college b/c I'm a fresh-out-of-high-school student(last day of high school was literally yesterday lol) and I'm starting college(nursing major obviously) in the fall and I'm watching videos on what to expect on like the first day for freshmen and also what to expect when trying to become a nurse(stresses, etc.). I'm both scared and excited(more scared than anything though >.

    At the beginning of your first semester, set up a private facebook page only for you and your classmates so ya'll can talk to each other and exchange information, set up times for study groups, share helpful youtube videos and simply for encouragement for each other. Helps me a lot with not feeling alone.

      Lilacspectrum why doesn't your school let you? That seams like a dumb rule, would they let you do it if a teacher was in the group? My high school had a rule like that and we needed a chat for marching band so we just added the band teacher and percussion instructor.

    If someone asked why I wasn't a doctor I would just look them up and down and say, "Well why aren't YOU a doctor?" 😂

    • @FlattenedCrumbs
      @FlattenedCrumbs 7 років тому +24

      XAcidRainbowX what I found is the best reply to this would be "well what is your profession?" and after they answer, whatever it may be you can ask why aren't they at the higher position up? Ex.) why aren't they the executive instead of a manager 😂

    All your tips are spot on! Nursing school is no JOKE! It's time consuming, expensive and mentally and emotionally taxing. I'm currently in FNP school vlogging about my journey and these tips hold true even in grad school! Awesome post!

    The textbook tip is very accurate. I bought almost no books in my BSN program. Now that I'm in a CRNA program I continue to only buy the most necessary books that are required. It has probably saved me a few thousand dollars over the course of my education.

    a few tips that i have learned as a PRE-NURSING student:
    -find ways to obtain textbooks CHEAPER (if you can buy used books, rent your books, or purchase them via e-text, do so. It is SO much cheaper than buying new books).I absolutely agree with the how unnecessary textbooks can be in some courses.
    -If you are looking to go into the medical field, it helps tremendously to have EXPERIENCE beforehand. Put yourself through CNA school or become a HHA certified and do in-home care. You will learn how to do all of the "grunt work" of nursing and when you get to your RN clinicals, you will be a lot more comfortable working with patients and performing various duties.

  • @BlahBronxJodes

    I concur with all these tips! 😁
    Now that I have finished Fundamentals, Med-Surg and Maternity and Peds, I totally agree with paying attention more in A&P... basics like anatomical direction and organ functions will come back to haunt you. One system I should have paid more attention to is the CARDIOVASCULAR, no matter how much you try to avoid it, guarantee you will know the flow of blood in the heart like the back of your hand by time your done!

    They put “required” on the suggested or optional books so that financial aid will pay for them if you want them. You can wait until the first day of school and ask and they will tell you what you need for homework. A lil pro tip :)

    Nurse practitioner is two extra years and you do the same thing as a doctor your just not a MD... so if you think you cant go through med school, but you wanna be a little more than a nurse (not saying regular nursing isn't enough cause its more than anyone thinks it is.) Nurse Practitioner would be a good thing to go for! Good luck to everyone whos in the medical field!

  • @YouLovesChloe
    @YouLovesChloe 7 років тому +3

    The last point you made about people asking you "why didn't you want to become a doctor?" is SO TRUE. I'm getting my pre-reqs done right now and my friend's mom is becoming a nurse practitioner and she constantly asks me this. I always get super uncomfortable. She like always tells me how nurses make no money this and that. But honestly I just love what nurses do and the field itself.

    thanks for sharing your experience with us about these tips (: I've been through ups and downs in my prerequisite curriciulum and have heard words of encouragement and discouragement. BUT, that didn't stop me from attaining certain opportunities from references, friends, and family. I feel like once I get into a nursing school going into clinicals, will be a familiar experience to me just more of the actual nurse's role. I have an advantage from being a certified assistant at a nursing home, and I'll soon be starting as a tech at a hospital. Hopefully, I can branch out to other areas at the hospital I'll be working at when I have a few months of experience at the ortho unit I'll be working in.
    ALSO, when it comes to studying I feel like I'm in the same boat as you because I, too, am used to studying and memorizing concepts and terms vs. already knowing those concepts and terms and then applying them to certain scenarios to practice critical thinking skills. I noticed this whenever I sat through a CNA exam in class and I would be one or two out of the people in a group of 15 who would only get c's on my exams. Eventually I picked up my study habit (USING A SYLLABUS or an outline helps alot!) and then utilized the text and workbook with their practice questions, and eventually ended up raising my grade in that class. I'm bookworm smart, but not when it comes to application. That just takes practice and really learning how to think critically. Thanks for your videos again, and keep up the good work! (:

    • @TheNurseNook
      @TheNurseNook  7 років тому

      Using an outline definitely helps with studying! Your background in health care is going to be so helpful once you start your clinicals, best of luck to you!

    can you tell me how long it takes to complete the pre-reqs? I think its two semeters, which is one school year. Then the program itself is 2 years, so really its like 3 yrs for and ADN right? They make it seem like two yrs only

      It took me about 8 semesters (including summers) just because I had failed a class and had to retake and also switched schools so I had to retake a lot of pre-reqs.... for the ADN only it is typically about 1 year in length and then the nursing program is also another year to a year and a half in length... hope this helps

    When I was in nursing school you had to open every single book. Everything was taught from there the lecture were more like review so if you didn't read you where lost
