In the end, it wasn't about the show, it was about the passing of time, the looking back at the ghosts we all have, and the sense that we should appreciate the amazingness of the ordinary moments of life.
I watched this a million times, and don't remember the last time I sobbed this hard. That was our family, too. What a series. What a cast. WHAT A GOD-DAMN AMAZING FINALE.
During this scene the whole time I was crying like a baby... too much emotion from the whole 3 seasons... so many memorable colorful characters... criminally underrated series this is.
Just completed watching The Deuce for the second time.... Everyone’s comments are spot on. This ending hit me hard. While I don’t know any of you I am glad I wasn’t alone in how hard this hit me. Y’all made me feel better.
This show is a journey. Not a lot of people watched it but someone across the world who has never been to New York did. And this finale version is great.
It didnt preech anything sjw it was just showing what happened.that feminist movement was a thing back then what do you expect them to be republicants in new york?
I’m 23 and I’m from Mexico, but this scene made me cry a little, the nostalghia was powerful. I can only imagine the way you felt, because indeed you lived it. Amazing.
I'm your age exactly and I used to go to Manhattan every weekend to Mannys and other music stores on 48th st. Always walked up 7th ave. to check out the theaters and strip joints and saw many Lori's and Candie's on the street. The Metropole was the biggest strip bar there, and though we never went in, we would crane our necks to try and get a peek. At the time, it was an exotic thrill coming from the suburbs. And with this series-I get the nostalgic feel that they were getting at.At least it was real. Times Square now is a joke.
oh my god, this show... I thought it was moving really slow and not much really happened in the first couple seasons, but by the end of this season, I realize, THAT'S LIFE. this is life passing. thats what the show is about. and the city. my god, has any show ever improved more and ultimately punched harder than the deuce did in its final season?!?! it went from meandering to affecting to utterly devastating. my god, Vincent's final walk... with this music. I would've never imagined this show would ever achieve this level of emotional resonance. im blown away.
I love it because it captures the transitory nature of life. As each season starts, you see exactly where the characters are at that certain point in time. But with each new season, the people who inhabit 42nd Street have moved on somewhat. And that's life. No matter who you are, your life will change and the people you meet along the way will change. By that I mean the people you know will change as people themselves and the people you know will enter your life and leave your life at some point, you'll fall out of touch will people for years only to become friends again years later. And that's the nature of life. Nothing ever really stays the same, people change, they grow, and they move on. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst.
This final scene was so sad, full of emotion. Hit me like a rock. Just like an episode before, with Lori...I`m so sad this show ended, what a great show this was.
Vince's walk on the sidewalks of new York in the final left both a heavy sense of loneliness in this mortal world and a bright joy of the eternal soul, the forgiveness of sins... I haven't seen anything like this in any movie, it's just brilliant!
Only Debbie Harry could sing this song for so many reasons. And what a vocal shows her lower register and how she’s been an interpreter of songs and a storyteller.
Can't get this song out of my mind since I saw the finale of The Deuce. My late mother sang the chorus to me when I was a kid and I fondly remember her explaining to me what to trip the light fantastic meant. I had tears in my eyes listening to Debbie Harry's haunting version of the song. A classic.
One of the most underrated TV series of all time, a pure look at the human condition, no heroes or villains, just people trying to make their way in the world.
This has to be one of the finest finales to any series, The final scenes with Blondie's singing rips at your heart strings. How come this series didn't win an award? Thank you to all involved.
Vince: "Where'd everybody go, all the regulars?" Leon: "You know, when I was a kid in the country, when someone I knew had passed away, I asked my mother where they'd gone to" Vince: "What'd she say" Leon: "They walked into the arms of Time" Who is the first "ghost" Vince encounters during his final walk? Leon.
Wow, just wow, this show hit me so damn hard. I'm not American, nor have I ever been to New York, but I felt so strongly for these characters and their plight. Bravo to all who made this masterpiece.
This song makes me emotional. The ending of the show hit me hard and made me cry - I think it was the (paraphrasing) 'walking into the hands of time line' that hit me in the feels.
Omg yes. When it finally hit him at Leon's that the regular costumers who'd been there for years were nowhere to be seen and Leon says that his mother told him that whenever someone would die. Then you see in this seen that even Leon himself walked into the hands of time. And you don't know what year he did. That will always stick with me.
One of the best series finale on TV!!!!! So simple, nostalgic, and beautiful. Vince strolling through Times Square, fka the The Deuce, and seeing the people of his past, whose energy left their imprint in NYC and on him, but only he can see them so vividly.....AMAZING!!!!!! Gone but not forgotten in his memory, especially Frankie (I teared up at that part).
The saddest thing of this finale is Vincent’s stroll down the streets, he was the most caring of the characters and ended up all lone. Reminiscing his old days surrounded by sadness, happiness, and regret. Amazing character and actor. The guy who had it all ends up with nothing. All his love and help went with recognition. A real hero
You nailed it right there. Vincent was the only truly caring guy out there. What got me at the very end of the clip you saw his girlfriend as a high priced lawyer walking through the crowd.
Felt a little lost after watching the finale. As I started to contemplate my own mortality. It's hand waiting leading to my own destiny. Reflections of the past reaching its immortality. Brilliant.. standing ovation.. The Entire cast, production, etc every soul that made this series happen. Thank you❤️
This is probaly the best ever final scene /conclousion of any serie that is out there. It literally made me cry. Vincent is one of the best tv characsters in the history of televisoin in my opnion. So realistic, unic, good, sad... And I also very much liked Bobby; the man stole the show .
This is from a tweet I sent (or tried to send) to David Simon re The Deuce. Having now watched the finale, I agree with everyone that it was emotionally devastating, and I watched that final sequence as if in a trance. One of the greatst mini-series' ever, and in some respects absolutely the greatest of them all. (Didnt realise it was Blondie doing that incredible old chestnut of a song either). This is from what I sent Simon: In the late 1970s I became night manager of a shop called Record Haven, on Seventh Avenue, just off 42nd street, and come sunset, the whores would line up in front of my shop to ply their trade. (I didn’t imbibe, though one night, for my birthday, a friend took me to a brothel called The Lucky Lady, which was on West 46th or 47th Street; their gimmick was you got a free T-shirt). My shift at the record shop was from 5.00PM to 1.00AM, and 2.00 or 3.00 on Saturday nights, and you can imagine the sort of people who'd come into the shop at that time. On my first night as manager we had a small riot when a mob crashed into my shop in pursuit of a street photographer, who had apparently photographed the wrong person, and we had to save him from a beating, or worse. We also had a sister shop of the same name on the north side of 42nd street, near to Eighth Avenue, and I would make trips between the two shops. I also went out with a girl who worked as a stripper at the porn Emporium that was on the northwest corner of Eighth Avenue and 42nd street, if I remember correctly. In other words, I knew the area well, and I'm writing to say how uncannily accurate and authentic your recreation of the place is, not just the look, which is exactly as I remember it, but also the feel of the place, its sleaziness and edginess, and its downbeat glamour. I'm amazed at how absolutely perfectly you've managed to capture it all - well done!
When I first started watching the deuce I thought okay another series .then it was like Wow. by the time you come to this scene you're so emotionally caught up with the characters that there's just no way that you couldn't just start bawling your eyes out watching Vince as he walked through New York and was seeing all the ghosts of all the characters that somehow became a part of your life.
This was an amazing ending to a great show....I was born and raised most of my life in NY and this show brought memories and good feelings....loved this show....
Saw last episode last night, and it made me cry so much. Made me think of all the people I’ve meet, places I have lived, places I have been to. And friends and family that has walked in to the arms of time.❤️
"I'd be there for him, but I'm dead." Heartbreaking and beautiful. That is life and the passage of time. Great show and an amazing ending. Whether funny or serious, James Franco is a genius.
A marvel for the eyes, the ears and the heart. I believe that I have never been moved so much for a final. Time passes dear friend Vincent. The Deuce series is already a legend.
The ending really struck me. Everything will end eventually and when the last person you know dies, most of all will be forgotten. Fucking depressing when you think of it..
The ending hits hard. I think all 3 seasons of the show did an ambitious task of bringing us through different points in the characters lives & New York itself, as a character. A city that goes from rough & tumble to polished & soulless, a direction many cities are going in today. Anyone whose grown up in a city & seen it change years later can relate to how Vincent sees his city at the end. It didn't get the hype or critical acclaim it deserves but those of us in the know, loved it. What a show.
Everything is so Disneyfied nowadays. New York lost it's grit in the 90s. It's just like every other metropolitan city across the USA, except on a bigger scale. Ruled by the ultra rich greedy corporations of America. I'm certainly glad to have experienced NYC in the early 80s. This was an excellently produced series that captured the essence of the era.
Bruce Hillberry Like Alston said at The end they didn’t fix The problem they throw The problem to other region they switch the criminals to a other type of criminals the suit and tie criminals those who carry pen and papers and briefcases instead of guns and can do much more damage than the others who are really armed
Great series, sad ending. We all gonna walk into the arms of time. Ashley's disappointed face after realizing Vince and Abby aren't together, also strikes hard.
For a native NY'er who lived and worked in HK during the 70's and 80's, this is the saddest and most touching version of this song. I can't listen to this without profound sobbing. I've since been evicted from my city. I now live in CT where I can afford to rent an apt. 😭
One of the most underrated TV shows ever, so glad that i watched this show. The Atmosphere, the nostalgia...just amazing. David Simon knows how to make great characters. Will miss each and every one of them.
Just recently lost my brother-in-law who spent 50 plus years On The Sidewalks Of New York and this epic ending of The Duce brings so many sad and loving memories of my brother-in law and The Duce. RIP Robert !!
I yearned for Abby and Vincent to stay together forever, many a tear shed in the last series but that finale was heartbreaking , best series ever for me
im from across the world, and have never been to new york, but this was a very moving ending, bobby and cc and lori hit me in the feels, but frankie was touching, i have many friends who died young, it made me think of them, i grow older but they are young forever. bless them all
This was the perfect choice of a song to finish up a terrific series. Everything that David Simon and co have made with hbo has been absolutely great! This finale by far brought out the most emotion cause you can see him remembering what was the best years of his life because he had Abby. The saddest part of this scene was when he told ash he didn't know how Abby was. That was the love of his life but he had to choose avenging his brothers death. Or was the right thing to do even though it cost him abby. Just 😥
I was lucky enough to visit NYC in October 1980 and again in Feb 1983 Long long time ago now. Fantastic series and a nice but sad way to end it. Hate Times Square now, but so much safer. I still have a handful of the flyers given out in the area at the time advertising different parlours and bars. Lol
just a brilliant ending .. did not expect it .. being about that age things really hit home. My own brother passed and to see Vincent see his sent tears streaming but LOL when the brother said " you look like shit " . loved Abby at the end ..
having played this song a few dozen times, each time I remembered different people, from year to year (1968 thru 1980) as I grew up, Walking The Sidewalks of New York. Half my family where cops, the other half, "Family". I saw The Deuce play out live, in real time. I loved the Series, and Debbie Harry's Finale song, and hated it as well. To many ghosts where brought forth by that song. But it was good to see them again.
I just watched the full episode again for a 3rd time and I noticed two things: Game of thrones was playing in the background while Vince was channel surfing at the hotel and towards the very end of the busy street scene, you will finally see Abby talking on a cell phone in a suit. It's so weird i didnt catch it the first time. I didnt know this was Blondie's song, I thought it was Bette Midler. Thanks for sharing.❤
Have not we all visualized a similar scene in our minds ? The scene of Walking down a familiar street where we lived as kids. We see faces many long forgotton and others well known but long gone. As demonstrated at the Curtain Call end of a play, the actors come out wave and take bows. Now see yourself walking slowly down the center of a street, road on each side stand those you knew now gone even have their long ago pets present. As you slowly walk down the center they all smile and wave and you the only one still living wave back.
I like to imagine that Abby gave her a job working for her after she became a lawyer, but Darlene is one of the characters that we don't really find out the fate of. Although, the show runners said that if Vince didn't see a character, then they are still alive in the present
it was fantastic: the whole series , the soundrack , the atmosphere ...everythink.New York has always been belonged to Blondie.her balladistic, Marianne Faithfull-esque voice , finally put the dot to the I. Little bit strange there werent Andy Warhol , Studio 54 persons.....but this is not a fault . Loved every moment of the journey a great kudos for all the people who has made it .
How brilliant was this? Debbie Harry's 1980s version of "Dreaming" opens each episode. Her 2017 rendition of "The Sidewalks of New York" closes the final episode. So her journey parallels the series journey and my own. I first visited New York in 1980 and remember the Times Square scene as pretty dangerous. My last visit was just pre-Covid. So my life parallels that journey too.
They managed to end the deuce......i only wish the sopranos had thought to end their series in a similar vein.....then again....it would’ve made the deuces ending diluted.....so in a way I’m glad.....it was a tremendous piece of television....congratulations to all the cast and crew....👍🏴
I can't think of another final scene of a show that hit this hard
This was such a perfect ending. It reminded me of another great ending to a series, that of Six Feet Under.
Dexter for me had me in Tears and the end of The Sopranos especially after getting in to the show after James Gandolfini death
I totally agree with you Tom, epic bitter sweetness 🥺
its a realization that time catches up to all of us and its sad
Tom Casagrande Six Feet Under.

How it was? Exactly as in The Deuce? I mean your own perspective
@@michasadowski9180 YES, exactly as the show portrays it, but don't romanticize to much,i it was dangerous place in the 70's and 80's

Only Debbie Harry could sing this song for so many reasons. And what a vocal shows her lower register and how she’s been an interpreter of songs and a storyteller.
One of the best shows of recent years

One of the most underrated TV series of all time, a pure look at the human condition, no heroes or villains, just people trying to make their way in the world.

Should've won all of the awards. All of them.
Nothing has made me feel my own mortality like this scene. Our lives and all the people we know will be lost to time one day.
Couldn't have said it better.
Vince: "Where'd everybody go, all the regulars?"

I yearned for Abby and Vincent to stay together forever, many a tear shed in the last series but that finale was heartbreaking , best series ever for me
Such an incredible song for an incredible series, very emotional farewell episode, going to miss it
This one of the BEST shows ever! 👍👍❤
Go watch it people, you wan't regret it.
Лучший сериал! Не устаю пересматривать! 🩶
im from across the world, and have never been to new york, but this was a very moving ending, bobby and cc and lori hit me in the feels, but frankie was touching, i have many friends who died young, it made me think of them, i grow older but they are young forever. bless them all
I lost it when i saw Paul and Todd together again 😢
I will never forget this scene in my life, Old Vince meets Frankie!!!!
Beautiful, sweet and sad ending to one of the few series actually worth watching
The ending was very poignant and emotional bitter sweet
great writing great characters great show great ending
This was the perfect choice of a song to finish up a terrific series. Everything that David Simon and co have made with hbo has been absolutely great! This finale by far brought out the most emotion cause you can see him remembering what was the best years of his life because he had Abby. The saddest part of this scene was when he told ash he didn't know how Abby was. That was the love of his life but he had to choose avenging his brothers death. Or was the right thing to do even though it cost him abby. Just 😥
that question was about Ashleys daughter
@@edwardfetner2513 no it wasn't. Ashley didn't have a daughter.
I cried when I watch it. One of my favourite tv play. Thanks to all of them.
Perfect. Perfect series ending with a 1890's song with a 2019 version twist. Love it.
One of those moments....the best mini series ever...ending blew me away.
Lol
This show was absolutely brilliant.
just a brilliant ending .. did not expect it .. being about that age things really hit home.
Tell us more about your life. Were you born and raised in Manhattan? Where did life eventually take you?
Walked those streets in my younger days. Maybe it's my age but this segment had one hell of a punch.
Very emotional scene....n with James extra ordinary acting... his expressions..god...I cried like a baby.....
Very well depiction of human life....
Fancy Vizion this song was first recorded in the 1890’s and was covered many times with any different types of artists including Nat King Cole.
I think we also see Abby's face on a sketch next to Eminem's. It's the frame after Vince encounters Ashley in his final walk.
Amazing finale… heartbreaking
This scene had me crying my eyes out…. To all my friends and family who have came and went…. I am just a kid from uptown
A Wonderful emotional renditIon of Debbie Harry' s vocals here
Fingers crossed we get an official release soon. What a perfect end to a perfect series. Very poignant.
I posted the scene in 2 parts on my channel
GOD THAT FINALE WAS EPIC!! I CRIED. :-)
I've watched this many times. Love it.
I wasn't ready for that ending
I don’t know, Ash...
Thank you for the upload.
I’d be there for him...but I’m dead!
He actually said "I don't know her" to Ashley's question. Meaning he hadn't seen Abbie in 35 years
Another masterpiece from David Simon. Can't be more perfect.
The ending reminded me of Scrubs 8th season's finale. As effective as well.
I wonder if Darlene ever got to be a nurse.
So many unanswered questions.
I like to imagine that Abby gave her a job working for her after she became a lawyer, but Darlene is one of the characters that we don't really find out the fate of. Although, the show runners said that if Vince didn't see a character, then they are still alive in the present
It was so difficult to hold my tears and I've tried to watch it again but my heart was so broken so I stopped not ready yet
it was fantastic: the whole series , the soundrack , the atmosphere ...everythink.New York has always been belonged to Blondie.her balladistic, Marianne Faithfull-esque voice , finally put the dot to the I.
The last 10 minutes, that really broke my heart,
Ash Verjee thank you for posting this song.
la serie più bella degli ultimi anni... Franco bravissimo!
They managed to end the deuce......i only wish the sopranos had thought to end their series in a similar vein.....then again....it would’ve made the deuces ending diluted.....so in a way I’m glad.....it was a tremendous piece of television....congratulations to all the cast and crew....👍🏴
Best fucking tv show i ever watched. The final screen with this beautiful song moved me so much that i cried . Fuck ! I m a mid 40ies man ...
