  • Avadhana literally means concentration. The art of Avadhana is about showcasing superior mastery of cognitive capabilities - observation, memory, multitasking, task switching, retrieval, reasoning and creativity in multiple modes of intelligence - literature, poetry, music, mathematical calculations, puzzle solving etc. Ashtavadhani perform 8 such tasks simultaneously. Shatavadhani Ganesh is a practitioner of this art and has demonstrated performing 100 such tasks simultaneously, hence the title shatavadhani. He has performed more than 1000 Avadhanas in Kannada, Sanskrit, Telugu and Prakrit. He is known for extempore composition of poetry and is the only Shatavadhani from Karnataka. In Telugu, this 'Avadhanam' is still practising. It is being conducted every year in Hyderabad and Rajahmundry etc.
Thanks to current Telugu Avadhanis like Madugula Naga Phani Sharma, Medasani Mohan, Vaddipathri Padmakara Sharma, Gannavarapu Lalith Aditya (He's is born and raised in USA, youngest Telugu Avadhani who did Avadhanam at young age) etc for preserving this form of literature....

No takers for such art forms because of no recognition from the general public (They prefer cinemas more, alas). A lot of people don't have the intellectual inclination/patience to sit, appreciate such art forms. I can't even imagine the power of the brain of an Avadhani. Anyways this is for the most matured, refined audience. Most complex. Hopefully there will be takers

    • @csbalachandran

Fewer (not no) takers partly because it requires *effort* to access it. Cinemas don't demand anything from you except to suspend your disbelief (almost totally); they are *very* passive forms of entertainment. On the other hand, *avadhāna* requires you to have at least a modicum of interest in, and knowledge of, cultural traditions that you have to think and rethink (re-imagine). Only then can you appreciate an avadhāni's spontaneous feats.
I attended parts of one of Dr Ganesh's śatāvadhānas some years ago. I was very impressed by the sight of many young children (adolescents) watching the proceedings with great concentration and, most important of all, laughing at the humor from Dr Ganesh *spontaneoulsy* ! This gives me hope that there might still be young minds that might want to pursue this. But how many parents would encourage their children to follow this with any interest? Everyone wants their children to be doctors or engineers or some such. It is remarkable that some of the participants on stage, with Dr Ganesh are professionals in other fields; they have retained and nurtured their interest in avadhāna and *practise it!*
Ultimately, caregivers have to be interested and show children how to enjoy an avadhāna.
I understand that Dr Ganesh is also teaching several youngsters in this art and they are growing in it. So, please have hope. :)

Wonderful art! So well explained by Shatavadhani Ganesh ji. I wonder, how one can develop so much of concentration, intelligence and knowledge, with presence of mind thrown in, that is required to become an Avadhani. Big salute to Ganesh ji. I particularly liked the stanza created on the fly, using Hello, Sweety, honey in Sanskrit for Śūrpaṇakhā! Also, the stanza with kala is an amazing feat by itself. Gives me goose pimples to just to imagine, one can create such poems, extempore!

Good that he explained the concept of avadhanam. But sonehow I feel this is not right way of appreciating art. In my opinion art must be admired not tested. Here all eight people question a single guy where he needs to prove by answering correctly and under pressure. This is mental torture. If he doesn't answer correctly, there are chancee that he feel insulted which is not good. Always question must be asked to know the answer and not to test the other persons talent. If in interview I can understand, but calling it as an art form is not good. It's just showing off that one is super intelligent. Real knowledgable person won't show off. He also said how he used four words "hi", " Hello", "sweet" And "honey" In sanskrit pose. A word means something when it's used in the form it is meant to be. If he uses the sound of the word in a different language altogether, then I don't think it's correct. Such a waste of time. Sorry to say this.
