I wonder who creates these names and why the soccer team cannot be simply called Nigeria. Must it always sound overblown?

It's more of a biological issue than a political one. You can't change the identity of your ancestors through politics or religion. But you can also decide to be Pan-Nigerian without sounding like there's a problem between you and any other ethnic group. That you are beginning to realise that is a plus for you. You can claim to be a detribalized Nigerian and still love and respect your ethnic group.
