When i found out that was Swordsman, it took me a minute to realize who he is and his connections to Hawkeye
Empyre being marketed as a Skrull V Kree super war and then outta nowhere, Swordsman comes in like "SURPRISE MONSIEUR, THIS IS A CELESTIAL MESSIAH SEQUEL NOW, OUI OUI"
I know thankfully the MCU will never cover any of that history with Swordsman and Mantis, maybe some Celestial Madonna stuff... If they make it good like the game.

I would find it hilarious if Mantis gets drunk at some point and starts babbling about how she’ll give birth to Space Jesus while Star-Lord yells at Rocket & Thor for tainting such a pure person.
Even if they did give them a relationship of some kind in the MCU, it'd probably be better or more tolerable because Mantis is a much better person in that universe.
I don’t know about Jacque, but I like Jack from Hawkeye. He’s either a campy villain, or a dude who is earnestly trying to be a good stepdad that also likes swords. Dude bought and read a book about being a step-parent, he is clearly trying to put in the work.

Plus the actor, Tony Dalton, has already wowed me. I've only seen him in Better Call Saul, but from that show alone I am pumped about what his character does in Hawkeye. Hell, he could be playing Frog-Man, and I'd still want to see Dalton's performance.

It sounds like the original concept for Swordsman was actually pretty cool and he had a lot of potential.
I really like the idea of an idealistic hero who becomes cynical and turns to petty crime after being betrayed by the people he spent years fighting to help, who takes in an orphan boy who become a hero and turn against his villainous mentor, and who eventually decides to go legit and become a hero as well but it's really just a means to gain people's trust so he can commit more crimes without being suspected.
It sounds like this could have been a really morally complex and interesting character. Too bad they ruined him with all that bizarre cosmic madonna tree messiah nonsense.
Jacques is a French swordsman who fought for the (metaphorically distinct) vietcong and was then betrayed by them on extremely dumb and somewhat racist grounds (that oppressed people would betray those in the oppressor groups who bothered to actually help them). He then left to America and trained Hawkeye and became a minor petty thief. Ok, What's so bad about this guy?
He kidnapped cap to join the avengers, was in a relationship with a homewrecker who was prophesied to give birth to space Jesus or whatever, and somehow became a plant person.
Nevermind, I see the problem now.

Oppressed people do have a tendency of turning. Look at the French Revolution. Look at Afghanistan. Plenty of examples.
I think just how needlessly convoluted his story is, just think about it for a second, your sinopsis of the character only covers half of it, leaving out the parts where it feels like someone was writting the story while on crack, like seriously just hear this "Hawkeye's mentor who sacrificed himself for his alien love interest-house-wrecker after joining the avengers after trying to take them down and fighting to make a cosmic messiah be born from her while stopping kang from assaulting and/or killing her, gets possesed by a tree alien that then has this son with mantis and then, and then, and then..." and so on, does it make sense to overcomplicate such a character? no
The "worst avenger part" isn't about morals, but about his story as a whole.
reading the whole "celestial madonna" storyline that was inexplicitly included in the Scarlet Witch and Vision comic book was a trip. i spent the whole time so confused as to WHY they were fighting Kang and WHY Mantis fucked off with a tree lol. Didn't even realize that Swordsman was the tree
And that's why slapping together random issues that have the characters in them and marketing it towards people unfamiliar with any of the shenaniganry involved is a bad idea
I mean, he is a character of the silver age, and a product of it's time, But at least he is not "Dr.Druid"

Steve Englehart did some decent comics, like his Captain America run, but every single time he went on these attempted grandiose cosmic stories like the Celestial Madonna or the New Guardians was always a sure disaster.
Don't forget he was the one who made Hal Jordan relent to an underage girls advances. That was a big black mark for hal.

As I wanted to watch the movie right actually….
Jacque Duquesne was a character I actually liked. He started out wanting to be a hero and fight for what is right, regardless of the personal cost, and even though he spent most of his life as a (often half-hearted) villain, in the end he died as a hero fighting for what is right, which was to me an oddly moving story arc. It was also telling that Rama-Tut had wanted to change that one element of the events he remembered (from when he was Kang and had fought on the other side of the battle): more than anything else, he wanted to save the Swordsman, and the one time he really lost his cool was when he failed to do it. He tackled Kang just as he fired, but all he changed was that the shot hit his sword and conducted down into his body, instead of hitting his body, and he still died. Rama-Tut (and the version of Rama-Tut that becomes Immortus, at that) must have seen some value in the Swordsman, if that's the one element he found most tragic out of the whole series of events.
I don't really look at the Cotati version as being Jacque. Yes, he does have Jacque's memories, but he also has all the memories of a millenia-old Cotati, so the human memories would be a drop in a very large bucket by comparison.
If watching this show has taught me anything, Mantis is yet another comic writer going full Pygmalion.

Worst Avenger? I don't know, some of those clowns that joined during that godawful Avengers: the Crossing "event" are pretty terrible (Moonraker and teen Iron Man, for example).

Can you do a video on Jon Kent being bisexual like the one you did with Robin? People who don’t read comics & didn’t know Superman had a son, are very upset that his son is bisexual, even though comics are filled with muscular men in tight clothes that have a lot undertones. He’s a new character & this is the first time he’s exploring his sexuality. So whenever I heard someone say, ”if you want LGBTQ+ characters, just make new ones,” when it comes to him, I’m going to throw hands. Plus he’s an alien that has interacted with different species, so his understanding of sexuality is different than ours. I also hate when people say it’s “forced" because that’s not how sexuality works and how can it be 'forced' if you don't HAVE to read it? Is someone ripping the money from your hands and shoving the book in your face? No! You CHOOSE whether to buy it or not!
I mean, it would pretty much be like the Tim Drake video he did a while back.
The main problem with Jon Kent is that Bendis wanted him to be aged up, so he tossed him into an off page adventure and we lost years of character development. He's basically a new character at this point, which makes me sad as a fan of the Super Sons books
The problem is that people want NEW characters if u want diversity, but whats the need of being superman son? They need to connect it to a already stablished character because if they dont it wouldnt have the same mediatic impact, the problem isnt lgbtq characters the problem is just creating them for the sake of diversity and media atention, and not to make a intresting character, characters like him have no personality and there only trait is there sexuality thats what people dislike not the fact that they are bisexual, Comics should be made to entretain not to be political propaganda or atention seekers.

Drake. Never feel bad about praising diversity. Your work is great
Honestly for me? This can be a character rife for good storytelling. Especially the early stuff and teaching Hawkeye what he knew. So here's how I would workshop this:
1. Keep the weird and crazy space stuff canon but soft reboot/retcon that it was clearly all tree alien dude that had Jacques memories and personality but not really Jacque himself.
2. The character is essentially dead but this being comics, dead is more like being sick or taking a vacation so the story focuses on Jacque being alive and not knowing he's supposed to be dead or wondering why he isn't dead anymore.
3. Redemption Run. It's a classic and easy way to reintroduce the character, plus it doesn't pigeon hole into one specific genre. This can work a few ways, like having Swordsman go back to being a well known mercenary for resistance groups or he's tossed into a high fantasy setting where he's now trying to be a hero, or a mixture of the two.
4. Keep the Marvel Cosmic stuff to a minimum or nonexistent. It's clearly not where this character fits. If we need to include Marvel Cosmic since Mantis is still kicking around and it'll make for drama then try to keep it simple. No weird Celestial Madonna nonsense.
5. Have him interact with "lesser" Avengers. People joke in Comics that Black Knight was such a weird Avenger choice, so having an actual moment where the two joke about being on a team where they're considered as worse than Hawkeye could be fun.
You can do a lot with this, the right hands can write some great stuff.

5:18 You missed mentioning Avengers issue 100 where Cap called "All Avengers Assemble" and the Swordsman had the utter gall to claim he counts among them because of the time he joined them just to turn on them. You can say a lot about the Swordsman... not really but go with it... but you can't say the guy doesn't have balls.
I like to imagine after he saw the swordsman on hawkeye he just went to his recording set up and started recording this video

I'm actually a big fan of the Swordsman (the 90s Avengers / Gatherers storyline). I knew bits here and there about the prime version but I learned so much from your video. I really enjoyed it. Keep up the excellent work!

Yeah swordsman being a master swordsman with a sword enhanced by alien technology is a decent idea. I also like the idea of his and mantis romance. relationships between superheroes is not super common.

They should incorporate parts of this storyline into tge Hawkeye show but make Armand Duquesne who died in the first episode comes back glowing green and telling Eleanor Bishop "they should pollinate if she knows what he means".
I am sure the MCU can make it work.

The Jacques Duquesne Swordsman and the Cotati Swordsman have become so detached by now that they're pretty much two separate characters. To the point where the Marvel wiki has different entries for either one. As someone who actually likes Duquesne (I especially enjoyed his part in the Avengers/Defenders War. Had a pretty stellar duel with Valkyrie and even saved the team from a death trap set by Dormammu.), I do appreciate this. As it means I can more easily ignore all the space tree nonsense that came after his heroic sacrifice.
This is further backed up when, during the Chaos War, he was among the Dead Avengers. A group of deceased members who were briefly resurrected to help fight against the Grim Reaper. And he was just regular old Swordsman.
Jaques is the most presumptuous character in Marvel, who names themselves the Swordsman and then goes on to be not even a top 10 swordsman in Marvel? Seriously.

As an environmentalist, I actually loved hearing the hilarious yet oddly relatable story about the plant species waging war on all the animals of the universe just cuz our homosapian asses tried cutting down a forest yet again 🤣

So I didn't know current swordsman is a literal tree. I honestly really prefer him being a morally grey character who is ultimately trying to do good. I hope they stuck to that if he reappears in a later mcu project. He'd be a fun supporting cast member for Kate bishop similar to Luis and happy in the antman and ironman/spiderman franchises

Hawkeye so far is a pretty decent show, not anything that blows my mind or something I'd say is bad, just middle of the road and watchable. I like the dynamic between Swordsman and Kate so far and am interested in where this thing goes. Another great and informative video, thanks Drake!
I don't want to talk about spoilers but this is leading into some cool stuff with some cool actors that did great jobs with their characters in past series.
I read the Avengers religiously as a boy, and must have been about 13 or 14 when Kang killed the Swordsman. I did not really dislike the character any more than I disliked any other sword-carrying super-hero -- I mean, what's the point of carrying a sword when they never stab anyone? They only hit bad guys with the flat of the blade. Hell, they might as well have carried a broom handle and smacked opponents with that. My problem was with all his sword's added powers. Hell, it was more a ray gun than a sword.
Anyway, I hated Manis. She was insufferable, entitled, and self-important. Good grief, Thor was an actual god, and he was not nearly so arrogant as she. And even then, "Celestial Madonna" sounded stupid. It still sounds stupid.
